  • Be a good off-roader
You don't have to be a woman to be a good off-roader, but it might help. Allen's purpose is to teach you how to do it right. He will guide you to avoid the macho, testosterone stupidity that can get yourself and others hurt. The pictures in the book of really bad examples (as well as good examples) drive home the point. One example shows a common bad practice off-roader make: You're driving along and encounter a wet spot. You avoid the wet spot by going around. This is bad because you've ended up widening the road, causing more erosion just because you thought you'd get stuck. Suck up the challenge and stick to the trail--you'll build your confidence and learn how to deal with these situations. The book is not about 4 Wheel off-road racing. Allen is about protecting the environment--even as he admits (and is ashamed) of how he might have been foolish in the past. His motto is As slowly as possible, as fast as necessary. Allen wants to train his readers to be responsible off-roaders. Allen is a great example: He gives right of way to anyone on a horse, or hiking. He'll offer water to hikers, and pick up trash left by others. We'd all be better off if we practice what Allen preaches. This book is written by a man with a ton of experience and his writing style is light, informative, with gentle advice all would be advised to heed. The book has a lot specs about specific vehicles which is dated, but his advice is timeless. ... show more

  • The best of road driving and recovery book I could find
I had picked up Brad Delongs 4 Wheel Freedom and then this book arrived a week later. Wow what a difference. I quickly tossed Delong's dated book to the side and read Allen's book over a few evenings. The information was up to date and relevant and the illustrations were great. If I could recommend any off road driving and recovery book this would be the only one. If you are experience with off road driving and recovery this stuff is not rocket science. If you like a good refresher or just something to read while you are not out on the trail this is the ticket. I wish I would have found it sooner. ... show more

  • Limited suspension design
This book is nice and helps with various aspects of 4 wheeling but it only has limited details on suspension design. Wanted a book that goes over suspension geometry.

  • Great intro to 4x4
This book covers all the major topics I can think of: 4x4 mechanics (various differentials and transmission elements), vehicle selection, spotting, recovery, winching, driving on various types of mud and other surfaces, tire pressure adjustment, emergency gear, rock crawling, creek fording, radio communications, and more! The writer is concise and to the point, and there are plenty of color illustrations. Overall the material is easy to understand, but you do need practice :) This is an awesome, very useful book. Highly recommended. ... show more

This book is absolutely incredible. Has so much information and useful tips. It's a good combo of firsthand instructional and technical information. For beginners and intermediate off roaders, this book will provide you a one-stop spot for knowledge that you would otherwise have to spend years and years reading scattered info online or having to find someone to teach you. At least with this book it's all organized and readily available. ... show more

  • A lot of information for the money. Lots of pictures as well
This book is meant to be flipped through many times. The pages are nice and thick and the print is very good. I love the photos as they help me to visualize what is being discussed. It goes from newbie to expert on four-wheeling tips. It also talks about modifying your rig and where to get started to be successful. I appreciate the large section on recovery and how to use a winch properly. this is a book I expect to pick up every so often when I want to brush up on a certain aspect of my 4 wheeling hobby. It's accurate to call it the bible as it has what you feel everything you need to know about the hobby. Bang for the buck, for the price Amazon charges it's an excellent read and every page has proven valuable to me. ... show more

  • Nothing revolutionary inside, but a good reference
Four-wheeler's Bible This book is not quite comprehensive for four-wheel off-roading, but it makes for an adequate reference on a variety of topics that range from discussions about hubs, different four-wheel drive systems, limited slip and locking differentials, and even tire designs. Included are some diagrams on proper spotter and wincher hand signals. However, it lacks a lot of useful techniques like how to exactly tie a winch cable onto another surface. There are examples of products that can do the job, but nothing on the application steps. The rating system used for describing the offroad capability of vehicles was a joke because the ratings (out of 5) was either 3 or 5. I purchased this book mainly to learn more about tire designs and the proper selection of a differential for driving in the snow. I came out learning a bit more about AWD and 4WD, but I did not discover anything exceptional or revolutionary from what I have already read on the Internet. Overall: 4/5 stars, good reference to sit on your shelf ... show more
