  • Makes an average cup of coffee
Im not expecting a coffee house espresso from a machine in this price category, just something that I can call an espresso that I can make at home. Crema from this machine is practically non-existent and what does come out is just flavorless bubbles that pop almost immediately. Ive tried several different bean brands as well as different grinds all the way to Turkish. Found the most oily bean I could find and still barely any crema. Due to lack of crema, this is only a coffee maker, not an espresso machine. If you are looking for a standard cup of coffee, then this will work for you. ... show more

  • Better then expected
I have been using this machine for almost a month now. So far it is better then expected for the price. I had 2 small issues when I got it that where easy to overcome: 1. The machine was not standing firmly due to base not installed properly (maybe due to some impact from the shipping). Need some forced it to get it back to it's place and fix it. 2. Installing the portafilter requires force. It is getting better the more I use the machine. Other then that, the machine is simple to use, steam wand works well. ... show more

  • Great value for entry level espresso!
So, I've been at this espresso game for a while, having used a machine at work, having snobby yet endearing baristas as housemates, and eventually having several espresso machines in our home over the last twenty-odd years! I was pleasantly surprised with this machine. It steams milk and pulls shots well enough for a single person, and is probably adequate for a couple of drinkers. In general, the finish is nice, and the function is straightforward. The details, though, do separate this from the upper crust of entry-level machines- certainly when compared to mid-tier or high-end machines. I'll list some of those considerations: -While the body is mostly stainless, there is some chromed plastic trim. This cheapens the look, and will likely be the first place to show wear. -The drip tray is comically small, and will fill up in short order should you have several coffee drinkers in the house. -Similarly, the water reservoir will run out sooner than later. -The tamper is plastic. I question how long it will last against repetitive 20-30lbs of recommended tamping pressure... -...which might actually be fine, because the filter basket appears to have a built-in backpressure plate. That said, this will be hard to clean compared to a standard filter and may clog. I've seen the backpressure plate implemented before, and while it helps keep extraction relatively consistent for learners, it has always been removable for cleaning. -Speaking of the portafilter head, it's light and will saturate with heat after a couple of shots. So, while the first pull might turn out ok, subsequent pulls may be impacted. -The basket also feels a bit small. Fitting 18g of ground coffee requires some patience. -I'm hoping the portafilter is chromed brass, but the nozzles appear coated with something else. It would've been nice if they were all one solid piece. -There is not much room between the portafiler and your standard 12oz cup (maybe 1/4"). So, oversized or tall cups are a no-go. -The steam wand is located slightly to the side. You'll be holding your steam pitcher or cup instead of just setting it on the drip tray. -There are no adjustments to pressure or temp. -The instructions could be better. -There is an odd mention in the manual of "if overheated, release some steam and try again". It seems a little... unrefined and doesn't lend much confidence to the whole process. If it sounds bad, don't worry- it's not. Everything I've listed is to be expected at this price point, and for $139 this is a great value for an entry-level machine in a one or two cup household. As an added bonus, the hot water pump sounds like the intro Van Halen's "Runnin’ With the Devil". ... show more

  • Entry level machine
I’m going to start by saying, I’ve been an espresso/coffee drinker for a long time. That being said, I’ve rarely used an espresso machine at home, normally purchasing my espresso drinks at coffee shops. So, my review won’t be a comparison of other machines I’ve used, rather a first-time espresso machine owner… Unpackaging – The machines was well packaged, but not overpackaged. It was easy to unpack and setup. Instructions – The instructions seemed initially a bit light, however when followed, they did the job. I had a few questions, but not about anything that matter is ultimately getting a cup of expresso made. That being said, if you don’t follow the instructions in order, you can have issues, as others have noted. Making a Cup of Espresso – I followed the instructions step by step and was rewarded with a nice cup of espresso. The milk frothing took a little practice, but was fairly easy, working just fine. A few other comments about the overall product: -The machines looked nice, however there are multiple parts that were plastic, which gave a feeling of cheapness. The key parts seemed to be metal, so this was encouraging. -The espresso dispensing piece is very tight to lock in and take out. This is a good thing, however due to the lightness of the machine, it is hard to find good leverage to torque it in and out. -The cup that holds the espresso grounds fits VERY tightly into the dispensing piece. So much so that it requires an external tool to help pop it out. As stated at the beginning of this review, I’m not a seasoned espresso machine user, so I can’t give comparisons. Due to the plastic pieces, not sure about durability, since I haven’t had previous experience with an espresso machine. What I can say is that it does take a little work, but delivers a nice end-product, especially at this price point. ... show more
