  • Use as standalone preamp ADAT extension for more i/o on my universal audio apollo twin mkii
I have this as a standalone ADAT preamp extension for my UAD Apollo Twin MkII Quad, but when thunderbolt fails (often on amd windows), I can just plug in the usb cable and my preamp conveniently turns into a high quality interface that is THE BEST IN ITS PRICE. However, WINDOWS CRASHES WITH MULTIPLE AUDIO INTERFACES, so I have to unplug my apollo anytime I want to use my 18i20 via usb. On mac, multiple interfaces via aggregated devices with core audio is easier, though still not recommended from what I've heard. 18i20 vs apollo twin mkii: -no dsps (processors on the interface [though the uad archaic ones suck depending on which plugins you use]) -uad console is much better than focusrite control -uad plugins are more exciting i think -not as fancy preamps +the sample rate on this just works (its preamps function without adding weird audio glitches on my tube mic due to what i think is some bug with sample rate) +on this there is no buffering or severe latency compared to some of the settings i have to tweak on the apollo to get what i need +the usb on this just works (usb-c to usb-a) +the 8preamps work and the air effect sounds cool but i havent been able to figure out if i can enable that manually by hand or not +the plugins and lite demos of software are an appreciated bonus -/+ (depends on you): no thunderbolt, for me i wanted usb --- this was really a special use review if you're really just shopping for high-tech ADAT solutions to expand your i/o :) ... show more

  • Beautiful and functional
I was using an old basic USB audio interface combined with a compact analog mixer to try and route all the inputs and outputs I wanted to use. The result was an ugly nest of wires and constant fiddling with knobs to ensure I didn't blow out my speakers when I switched from headphones to monitors. I recently upgraded my work area to a dedicated music desk with built in racks and that encouraged me to look for a rack based solution. I stumbled upon this product and after reading the manual realized that it would be the perfect solution. It had separate headphone and monitor outs and enough inputs that I wouldn't have to juggle things ever again. Audio quality is fantastic of course, but the physical usability is what makes me love it. Absolutely perfect for my needs. ... show more

  • Best Daw for 18 in/out for the Money
I absolutely love this interface. I have worked in studios for a large portion of my life and have used interfaces significantly more expensive than this and must say, this interface is great. Setup: 5/5 Setup took me less than 5 minutes. The app it installed was easy to use and focusrite actually gives you step by step videos of showing how to get it connected/registered. Sound: 4.5/5 Okay so I have used and owned interfaces that cost $4,000 or even much more than that, and this interface holds its own when compared. It has great depth and clarity, nothing seems overly hyped or boosted. When compared to something much more expensive, I would say the differences are actually very minimal. So, if you're concerned about sound quality, I think this is perfect for the money. Use/Functionality: 5/5 The main reason I bought this interface was so that I could use it for live shows and recording 10+ things at once (drums) at any location I wanted. Don't be fooled, you have to buy focusrite's octopre extension in order to record 16 inputs at once at 24 bit/96k quality, but it connects easily and is very easy to use. So bottom line for functionality, it's small/easy to use, and has 10 great inputs out of the box. ... show more

  • Quality, solid octopre.
This is a fantastic octopre for the price. I do not even consider it a bargain piece you have to make due with. It is outstanding in every way. It will save your months of your life by delivering clean and clear tones. Used it for drums, vox, amps, you name it. Plug and play was easy and tech support had chat that cleared up the technical mumbo jumbo. I recommend you add this to your arsenal ... show more

  • Solid interface for the Amazon purchase.
This thing is solid. Sounds fantastic! The pre amps are surprisingly great. Super super quite. My only complaint is the software routing... It can be a little clunky. It's not difficult or confusing but it can lead to being time consuming during your session depending on what your doing, specifically with monitoring. The usb connection is solid. I've tried this on osx big sur and Yosemite and had no issues. Do make sure your using a usb a to b 3.0 or up,or you may run into some funny issues. ... show more

  • Important Driver Installation Info
I want to share my experience using this audio interface with the community and something that other might not know. This device does sound fantastic (for my needs anyway) and I brought it to replace my ageing and very limited M-Audio Fastrack Ultra. I followed all directions, OS tweaks, recommendations, etc., but still had random drop-outs of audio during recording and on playback. I liked the interface and so decided to just live with it! I thought (thus suks...even my old interface did not have this problem). "Old" was the operative word here so with nothing to lose I decided to remove all the Focurite "recommended" USB drivers and Control SW (V3.11) and replaced with their older version V3.6 (which is recommended for Widows 7 and 8). So if you are struggling with this unit and having the occasional drop-out problems I was, then definitely try the following: 1. Do all the recommended tweaks for the OS (startup, USB port power, etc.) 2. Start/power on unit first then PC/Laptop (may be important step if using thunderbolt port). 3. Download and install the drivers Focusrite Control V3.6.0.1822, install, reboot. 4. The thunderbolt ASIO drvr specific still doesn't work but just select Focusrite USB ASIO which works fine in all my audio SW apps. Good luck. ... show more

  • Works as advertised
I have a Scarlett 2i and was always pleased with the interface between it and Audacity. I needed more inputs for our band so after reading the reviews and my experience with the 2i I ordered it. It was as advertised. The setup for my 8 mikes and the outputs for monitors and two outputs for headphones were exactly right for our home recording purposes. I did download the Pro Tool First, but soon realized that I could only record 4 imputs at once. I downloaded Reaper which allows many inputs so I can record 8 at once (four voice and four amps). The learning curve on this program was steep, but I have used it enough now and watched their many videos that I am able to record. The Scarlett 18i20 works excellent with it so far. ... show more

  • The best audio interface for that five hundo price point
Focusrite did a great job with the updated Scarlett big boy. 18i20. The preamps are fantastic, tons of features, tons of IOs, great interface software that lets you control the air,pad,line/mic selector. I really like that it has 2 headphone jacks so you don’t need a headphone splitter amp unless you’re working with a lot of musicians at once. I’m usually just recording myself or someone else. The talkback feature is BADASS. However, you do have to assign the talkback to an output (headphone typically) in the software or else you’ll push the talkback button and won’t hear anything. The monitor section is fantastic too because of one little button. That MUTE button! I don’t really use the dim button so eh whatever. But I do record with monitors in the same room so having an interface with a monitor mute button was actually one must have feature for me. I hate reaching around and clicking the monitor power switches off every time I wanna record. I also really like that you can see the levels on the little display better than you would see just a green or red halo on the smaller units. I was originally planning on the model right below/smaller than this one but the extra monitor features, dual headphones, talkback, more IOs, for only about a hundred bucks more as well worth it. I think this is the bees knees and I’ll probably use it for a long long time. ... show more
