  • Top HIFI headphone, Focal’s flagship
Today, I had the chance to audition the French 🇫🇷 flagship headphone, the Focal Utopia — the top-tier dynamic driver model from Focal, and certainly a premium piece of gear. I happened to have a vinyl record by Toni Braxton on hand, featuring her iconic track Un-Break My Heart. Known for her warm, magnetic voice, this record is truly a classic. The moment I plugged in the headphones, I was immediately captivated by the richness and warmth of her voice. The Utopia delivers exceptionally high fidelity. Its detail retrieval is extremely clean and precise, while still presenting a distinctive tuning in the midrange and treble. The bass is tight, articulate, and punchy—never muddy. This headphone undoubtedly sits at the very top of the Hi-Fi world. In the realm of stage monitoring, the flagship in-ear monitors from Ultimate Ears—like the UE Premier—are widely used by top performers such as Aaron Kwok, Jacky Cheung, Zhou Shen, and Huang Xiaoyun during live performances. That said, the only downside of the Utopia is its soundstage—it simply cannot match the expansiveness of the Sennheiser HD 800 S. However, to fully unlock the performance of the HD800S, you need a very capable amplification chain. I also compared the Sennheiser HD 600 with the HD800S. The latter offers a significantly wider soundstage, but the presentation is more neutral and emotionally restrained. It excels with large-scale orchestral works and film scores. Without a sufficiently wide soundstage, orchestral music can feel congested and fatiguing. Instruments tend to overlap and lose separation, especially during climactic passages—brass and percussion can become overwhelming, and the midrange of the violins may lose clarity, diminishing the emotional impact and sense of immersion. In this regard, the HD800S truly lives up to its reputation. However, for vocals and instruments like piano, guitar, violin, and chamber music, the slightly colored and more expressive tuning of the Focal Utopia clearly has the upper hand. ... show more

  • Yea...they're worth it.
Amazing detail and addictive sound that is so real it makes you feel you've upgraded your ears. I'm hearing sounds in songs I've never heard before. It makes everything else feel like a step down.

  • End-game sound
I love my Naim Uniti Atom HE + Focal Utopia (2022) almost as much as my children. They enable you to experience music at an entirely new depth, with world-class dynamics and exceptional resolution and soundstage.

  • I regret buying these
Pros: Definitely premium, eye-catching, maybe with the right amplifiers they would sound great.. The emphasis here is clarity: you'll hear things you never heard before in your music. They're powerful, capable, top-of-the-line headphones. This is the pinnacle of what headphones can do right now. Cons: They're heavy, I often can't seem to get an adjustment that where they feel level and stable, they're extremely expensive, they're open-back, the there's something so harsh and piercing about the mid highs and treble that I suspected that they were damaged. If you're looking for "musical" headphones with thumping bass, good noise isolation, headphones that will greatly increase your enjoyment of music, these aren't it. These are more about absolute clarity. I made the mistake of equating audiophile with musical enjoyment and now I'm out $5k. I kind of knew it had a focus on clarity to the exclusion of other factors but I didn't truly appreciate what that meant. I don't like the look of these either. It's sort of an industrial, futuristic, alienware type vibe. I'll keep trying them from time to time and tweaking settings on my equipment. Possibly with the right amplifier they're as amazing as people say. Everyone says they're very source-revealing. I wish I had gone with Meze, Diana, or Focal's own Stellia, Azurys, or Bathys. ... show more

  • Great sounding but build quality not great.
Amazing sounding headphone but the build quality of the headband is not good for such a flagship headphone. It's okay when it's brand new but creaks very badly with age.

  • sonic majic
I have the 2020 model , I have to say this is the finest headphone I have EVER listened to. BUT keep in mind the purchase of this headphone NEEDS a high quality DAC, and a really good Amp. If you can't afford the premium equipment to this headphone buy a cheaper unit. When you pair this headphone with a good amp/Dac and push up the impedance you are rewarded with sonic magic . ... show more
