Style: Compression Cut 1/4" Shank Pattern Name: 1/8" Cutting Diameter Size: 1/8" Dia - 1" CL - 1/4" Shank
1/8” Cutter Diameter, 1/4” Shank, 1” Cutter Length Model #UD38410-B I reduced the chip load by 50% from the manufacturers instruction because this cutter is very long and skinny. Still didn’t help. It broke off just below the taper before getting through the first tool path. 90IPM feed rate 18k rpm 1D depth of cut ... show more

  • Very high quality bits from FivePears
Style: Up Cut and Down Cut Set 1/4" Shank Pattern Name: 1/4" Cutting Diameter Size: 1/4" Dia - 1-1/4" CL - 1/4" Shank
I tend to be pretty picky about router bits and there is a definite differences across brands. I like Axxxx and Wxxxxxxx a lot, but they are so expensive and often not justified for a small woodshop like mine. I have owned a few FivePears products before and think of them as a brand with little chance of huge disappointment. Their usual products are thoughtfully designed and faithfully manufactured for mid-level quality. That said, these two nano-coated, all carbide bits seem out of the norm for FivePears because they represent a higher level of quality at a much higher price than their usual. I had to write this review quickly, so have not had a chance to put them through a more comprehensive test. I used the up bit to make a couple of box joints in pine and the down bit to make a some grooves and dados as a test for some inlay in sassafras. Sassafras mills well and made the shop smell good. Both bits came well boxed and well labeled both on the bit and box. You do not want to get the two bits mixed up. Both bits are sharp and cut very nicely providing clean bottoms and shoulders. Of course they are new and I would expect this even from lesser quality bits. I have included some images of the results. Imperfections in the box joint should be attributed to operator error and a hasty setup. The up bit cut a little better after some use (wear of the coating off the cutting edge?). The down bit made a really clean dado in the sassafras. The groove had clean shoulders but was a little hairy on one side. As a simple test of whether all new bits cut well, I made a dado with the up-bit .The dado shoulders were a ragged a mess with loads of tearout. Do not get the bits mixed up! It iswhy labeling is so important. ... show more

  • Good but with one caveat
Style: Up Cut and Down Cut Set 1/4" Shank Pattern Name: 1/4" Cutting Diameter Size: 1/4" Dia - 1-1/4" CL - 1/4" Shank
I've primarily used the upcut bit on epoxy and plastic, and the quality has been commendable. The bits not only look aesthetically pleasing but have also retained their sharpness. Additionally, the finish is sleek, and the shavings are effectively cleared from the cut. However, a point of concern for me is the length of the bit for its 1/4" shank. When I operated these bits at my standard feeds for 1/4" (with a 1/2" shaft), there was a noticeable vibration or "singing." I suspect a slightly shorter bit might alleviate this issue. Nonetheless, reducing the speed by 20% did the trick. For anyone considering this bit, my advice is to be gentle with it to ensure longevity. ... show more

  • Quality CNC or hand-held router bit
Style: Down Cut 1/4" Shank Pattern Name: 1/8" Cutting Diameter Size: 1/8" Dia - 1" CL - 1/4" Shank
The media could not be loaded. This is not my first FivePears router bit - I like them because they are 100% Carbide construction for durability and longevity, plus the ones that I own have the nano-coating on the cutting area of the bits, which helps the bits be smooth-cutting and cooler-running (which further helps to prolong the life of the bit). This particular item is a 1/4" shank, 1/8" cutting diameter down cut bit, and has a generous 1" cutting length. I've started to appreciate the down cut vs up cut bits lately for material that has a "fragile" top surface, for example thin plywood or old and dry pine as I used for a sample cut in the attached video. In this clip, the first half shows the cutting of a simple pattern in a REALLY old and EXTREMELY dry piece of 2X4 using a standard up cut bit, while the second half shows cutting basically the same pattern with the FivePears down cut bit. The only difference in the design is the profile cut at the left side of the toolpath, in which I used "UC" for up cut and "DC" for the downcut bith. It may be a little hard to see, but the up cut bit tore up the top of the material more than the down cut, particularly in the "UC" and "DC" parts. That's what a down cut bit is particularly good for: maximizing the integrity of the material surface along the edges of the cuts. A downside of the down cut is often said to be a rougher bottom of the cut, but in this case I compared the two cuts and the bottoms looked identical to me. Another thing I like about FivePears is that they include a spec sheet with feeds, chip loads, ramp speeds, and other information pertaining to their bits. This is a handy reference to help make the most out of their tools. ... show more

  • Clean cuts even at shallow passes
Style: Compression Cut 1/4" Shank Pattern Name: 1/8" Cutting Diameter Size: 1/8" Dia - 3/4" CL - 1/4" Shank
I used an upcut first on an identical project and it left lots of hanging pieces of wood on the edges of the cuts. I then put this compression bit on and did an identical project with the same materials and the difference was night and day. This bit cut clean even with my shallow .1" passes into hardwood. I would definitely recommend this bit. ... show more

  • Works well for fast material removing. Finish on soft wood leaves something to be desired.
Style: Up Cut and Down Cut Set 1/4" Shank Pattern Name: 1/4" Cutting Diameter Size: 1/4" Dia - 1-1/4" CL - 1/4" Shank
This bit works well to remove material when cutting on my CNC machine. The lifetime of the bit seems to be shorter than expected and dulls on the softwood I like to use. I do find that the surface finish left over on the bottom of the cut is rougher than I'd like this can be gotten around by using another bit to go over it and clean it up but then that's an extra step in the process. Some more experimenting may also be done to get the surface finish I'd like but I think I'll stick to what I was using. ... show more
