Our NEST smoke detectors had expired after 10 years and I was pissed off to discover that they no longer make new ones. These First Alert SC 5 are pretty much the next best thing- not perfect but good enough. The downside- no path light or motion sensor and they don’t show up on the legacy NEST app. The good side- they integrate seemlessly on the Google Home app and they do work in conjunction with my other NEST detectors to all sound in case of an alarm. The NEST detectors don’t show up on the First Alert app Installation was really easy- they provide a harness that hooks onto the old nest connector and the SC5 actually mounts on the NEST mounting bracket so you don’t need any tools to make the swap. It’s literally plug and play. The first Alert app for IPhone was really easy to use and setup of 3 units was very fast In time I don’t think I’ll miss the Nest features I’m giving up

They don't work. Had trouble setting up the first one. Had Support on the line. They couldn't figure it out. Wasted 2 hours, and sent it back at their request. Got a new one today. Spent an hour trying to set it up. No-go. What a waste of time! When the Nest ones came out, they clearly were best-in-class. I have 5 total. Work great. Expensive but quality. Now, they discontinued it and handed it off to First Alert. These new ones are junk! Guess I'll have to get a refund. Now, what will I do for decent detectors?? Any ideas?

I bought this as the only available functionally-equivalent replacement for the first of 3 expiring Nest alarms. The good news is that First Alert has made this reasonably painless, both in terms of hardware and software. The installation is greatly simplified by the fact that you can use the old mounting plate. It is completely compatible. First Alert includes a short adapter cable that connects to what you unplug from the back of the Nest alarm, and this plugs into the First Alert alarm, making the wiring step a safe, foolproof, 15 second operation. The installation is also guided by the First Alert phone app (which unfortunately requires a registration). Once you get that set up, you can import it into Google Home (but not the old stand-alone Nest app, as far as I can see). Both processes were straightforward. My main quibble is that, as other reviewers have noted, the voice alert speaker is lower in volume and very much inferior to that of the Nest alarm, and there is no motion-activated night light, which is a nice little extra with the Nest alarm. Overall, the physical alarm is less elegant and polished. Ending on a positive note, the manufacturing date stamp is less than one month old. Because the 10-year countdown starts the day of manufacturing (not the date of purchase or the date of installation), this was a significant relief.

ALL of the Nest combined CO and Smoke detectors in our home are expiring within 1 month of each other. There are TEN sensors that need to be replaced throughout the house (building codes where we live— every room that conceivable can be a bedroom needs its own sensor, which makes sense) which is a large cost at about $130 a sensor. We were concerned that the First Alert replacement sensors would actually fit and connect to the existing ceiling plates— they do! — and there’s an adapter that makes them easier to connect than the multiple wires that were in the Nest sensors they replace. Ours are hard-wired, so while battery life isn’t a concern so much for us, the sensors themselves have a 10 year lifespan. They’ve been able to talk to the Nest thermostat and Google as needed, so far they seem to work well based on the Nest Test cycle. The Alarm sounds the same as the ones they’re replacing and I appreciate that the system tells you which sensor is sounding (which I suspect I value more given the TEN sensors scattered over 4 floors counting the attics…)

First impressions are not good. The app is a disaster. It will not let me set my location - every time I try and save my location it says 'Error - Unable to save the location. Try again or choose another location.' And without saving a location, the app will not work, and thus you cannot install the device. I had to lie and 'invent' a new location until finally it would let me save it. No idea what the logic is - and no information is given. The rating of the app in the app store is very bad - have a look before you buy this device. I do not recommend this device, due to the terrible app.

These are marketed as the replacement for the Nest Protect smoke detectors since Google has decided to move Nest away from a focus on hardware. The First Alert SC5 cannot compare to the Nest Protect. The SC5's are expensive at $129 each, more expensive than the Nest Protect they replace. They do come designed to work easily with existing Nest Protect wire harness and attachment bracket. So installation was easy. Over the ten years of having the wired and connected Nest Protect system in place, I don't think we had a single false alarm where there wasn't an environmental issue (smoke, steam, excessive heat, etc.). Within the first week of installing the SC5 we have had several random false alarms... a loud annoyance when home, but another story when the alert is received while on vacation hundreds of miles away. This past weekend was the last straw though as we received 6 false alarms within a 4 hour period between the hours of 2am and 5am. There was absolutely no sign of anything that should cause the detector to sound an alarm. We had to disconnect the offending detectors, leaving our home partially unprotected for weeks. Oddly only two of the four SC5's installed caused false alarms, so it is possible that it might be a faulty lot. Use caution though, as this product can not be returned to Amazon after purchase.
