Description

Unlimited Rabbeting: using an Electric planer right up to the edge or on rabbets Often produces unsatisfactory results, as the machine leaves a lip that has to be removed by hand—unless you have the Festool HL 850 planer. The HL 850 lets you cut flush to an adjacent surface because it can plane across the entire width of the rabbet. Because the planer head is mounted to one side, it sits flush with the opposite side of the planer housing. The retractable side guard makes planning safer, and it swings up and to the side as the rabbet depth increases. Planning up to the edge in deep rabbets is No longer a problem.

Simply Festool. Do you need more. Throw away your DeWalts and Porter Cables and step up to the big boy. This will shave to the micron and with almost no dust. We use it in finished spaces with no problems.

An excellent power tool. One drawback - wish it had a detachable cord. Accidentally ran over it and instead of just swapping a new one, had to send the whole tool to have it repaired.

    • Great planer after you modify it !!
I received this planer 2 weeks ago and tried it out, I was very disappointed , I had snipe on the end of the board. The knife is lower than the outfeed plate which makes the snipe. Problem is the outfeed plate and the cutterhead (knife) are not adjustable. I called FESTOOL tech support and talked to the planer item manager and he could care less, which was real surprising. He said he never heard of any problems with the HL 850 planers. I exchanged the planer with AMAZON (they are awesome) and the second planer did the same thing , I had snipe on the end of the board and a small amount of snipe on the start of the board. I wanted to keep the planer so I decided to fix it my self. I ground the back of the knife which takes a very good bench grinder because the knife is solid carbide I think. After 3 tries I finally got the knife at the same height as the outfeed plate. This fixed the snipe at the end of the board. Next I sanded the edge of the outfeed plate next to the cutterhead , this fixed the snipe at the start of the board, but the snipe came back at the end a little bit, so I had to grind the back of the knife again, that got rid of the end snipe. This was a lot of work but now this FESTOOL planer cuts perfect . I love this planer now, to me it was worth the extra setup. Only bad thing is whenever I change the blades I will have to grind the back of the new knife. I have a Bosch and 2 Makita planers and they cut perfect right out of the box !! ... show more

The planer cut perfectly right out of the box and it’s continued to do so for the past several years. Festool quality and attention to detail is impressive as usual.

    • This has to be the most disappointing Festool product I ...
This has to be the most disappointing Festool product I own. Right out of the box it was apparent the infeed and outfeed were twisted and with more inspection the decks were 0.016" out and was unable to joint anything properly. Sent unit back to Festool and they quickly confirmed it was out of tolerance only to send me another new planer this time 0.025" out. I asked them to inspect prior to shipping but they obviolsy didn't. If you search around you will find they have had issues with these for several years and it has yet to be corrected. FYI the knifes are not adjustable and the quality control is not up to their typical standard. ... show more
