This is a well made, heavy duty axe. By the shape of the blade and the narrowness of the head/wedge, it is primarily a felling axe, but will work for some lighter splitting, especially of edge cuts of kindling from split logs. I think the wedge is a little narrow for regular splitting, but it would work in a pinch for sure and as a combination axe, it has enough weight and oomph to do splitting even if not as well as a splitting axe. The handle is long and strong, and the rubber handle part provides great grip. A very well made product. I put a side by side shot with our current axe and you can see that this axe is a beast compared to what we've been using, so definitely and upgrade for us. ... show more

The axe feels solid right off the bat. That full-length tang gives it a real sturdy feel, and it does genuinely cut through trunks well. It's not like some lightweight tools that feel flimsy in your hand. Practicalities: The fiberglass handle is definitely an upgrade over wood. It handles moisture better and doesn't get soggy. The shock absorption helps with the arm fatigue on longer sessions. It's effective for the main job – splitting hard wood – though it's not going to win any speed contests.
