  • Disappointing -I Do Not Recommend Purchasing This Machine
Number 1: the description said it was metal, (as in construction). The machine is not metal but plastic. Plastic parts do not hold up like metal. I paid for a metal machine but got a cheap plastic one .Number 2: when threaded correctly, the thread jumps off when spinning a bobbin AND when doing basic sewing. This is incredibly frustrating as it requires using the right hand to keep the thread from jumping out of its proper threading track. Number 3: there is no contact number given to call with these problems. I have not tried the embroidery features of this machine yet. ... show more

  • Easy to use
I am self taught and can make clothes and do basic sewing. I found this to be a sturdy machine that was easy to thread, and relatively simple to use. It does have a thick manual that is in English and easy to understand. I really enjoyed all the different stitches and the letters. Personally I would place this as a step above beginner but I have a lower price point to work with for hobbies. You have a significant amount of stitches available for the money. ... show more

  • Good beginner machine with nice features
To start, I have over twenty years of self taught sewing experience. I sew mainly garments, so I can't speak to quilting or other things. Additionally, I have used many types and brands of machines and personally own a mid-2000's Singer, a 60's era Singer, serger, and antique White Rotary. I honestly had fairly low expectations for this machine as I have only had decent luck with brand name machines. However, I have been pleasantly surprised for the most part. I was initially drawn to this machine for some features that none of my personal machines have such as the ability to drop the feed dogs and embroidery stitches. So far I have used this machine for some test stitches and am about 3/4 through a corseted dress bodice and it's going very well. The embroidery stitches, though I have only tested them on scraps, look beautiful but can be a bit tricky to align. The automatic ability to raise and lower the needle is excellent for corners. I also appreciate the ability to stitch without the foot pedal as I sometimes like to sit in my sewing chair with my legs curled up! I have found the bobbin to be a bit tricky to get used to. I believe this machine uses universal bobbins, as the manual says nothing about a specific size, but the plastic guard used to thread the bobbin sometimes makes it tricky to thread it correctly, which can cause a stitch jam. I also am not the biggest fan of the blade that snips the bobbin thread, as it makes it pretty tricky to pull the thread up through the machine. That being said, this is a really good price for a machine that, so far, seems to be working great, and has a lot of really convenient features. I would recommend this machine for someone on a budget or looking for their first machine. It comes with a lot of useful feet, a detailed manual, and several other helpful accessories as well. ... show more

  • Nice!
I'm a very experienced sewist and have used a lot of different machines. I recommend this over a store bought Singer hands down! It is more powerful and has the feel of stronger gears than a Singer Heavy Duty. This machine boasts powerful metal gears instead of plastic nylon gears, which is what the SHD has. The nylon gears do not last long at all. While I haven't opened up this machine, it is heavy enough to know that it is a metal chassis and gear set up internally. While the body is plastic, all modern machines (even the $25,000 machines!) have a plastic outer body. They haven't been made out of cast iron in decades so don't let the outer plastic shell fool you! This is an incredible machine that I can foresee lasting a very long time with proper use and maintenance. It has great features and very suitable for quilt piecing, garment construction including knits, light handbag construction, FMQ, thread painting, quilting, etc. This is a fantastic multi use machine that would make a great gift for anyone wanting to sew! ... show more

  • FAMILY 200 PRO|Computerized Heavy Duty Sewing Machine - great starter machine!
I have a top-rated sewing machine that was very expensive. My granddaughter has been bugging me to teach her to sew. I started her on my machine but she seemed to find my machine overwhelming so I ordered this one for her. This machine is made from sturdy plastic but this is exactly what I expect for a machine at this price. You will need to blow out the thread dust and oil the machine or do regular maintenance. For the price, you get a decent machine for basic sewing. It has a buttonhole maker and the bobbin is easily top-loaded. My granddaughter is 11 years old and so far she can load the bobbin and thread the machine alone. It sews smoothly and the extension plate is a nice plus at this price point. From the panel, you choose the preferred stitch style by putting in the number of the stitch. You can change the width and the length of the stitch. The foot control is easy to use and my granddaughter is learning how to control the machine. I am searching for a needle finger guard that will work with this machine. We have only used the machine a few times in the two weeks we have had it but so far it has been a great beginner machine for her. I will update my review if anything changes. ... show more

  • Very versatile sewing machine
This sewing machine arrived intact, in new condition, encased in styrofoam and packaged in a branded box. The 69-page instruction manual is printed in well-written English and has so many different feature and settings, I now have a new respect for seamstresses. It is UL listed and boasts a 5-year service life. I have not yet had the opportunity to use it yet, so I cannot attest to its functionality. But when I do, I will update this review. ... show more
