  • Great game but may be a bit unstable if you're running Windows 7
Platform For Display: PC Edition: Game of the Year
I originally bought Fallout 3 back in 2008, and played it about 3/4ths of the way through. I loved it, but it's a huge game, and it's hard to find enough time to finish a game like this if you explore every possible area and do every side quest as I like to do. Fast forward to 2011. While looking for a new game for my PC, I saw the Game of the Year Edition (GOTYE), and noticed that it included the five add-on packs for the game, priced for under twenty dollars here on Amazon. If memory serves me correct, the add -on packs to the game were each around twenty dollars when first released. So, it was cheaper for me to buy this GOTYE than to try and get all of the add-ons. If you've played either Fallout 1 or 2, Fallout 3 is very much the same, and I mean that in a good way, even though it's produced by a different company (Bethesda rather than Interplay). It's added new tweaks and improvements, but these are more evolutionary rather than revolutionary, and again, that's a good thing because if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Basically, this is a single player game where you are a vault-dweller in a post nuclear apocalyptic world, and after your father leaves the vault, you follow after him. I won't say any more about the plot, but it grows tremendously from there. Along the way, you can help or hurt many non-player characters (you can play as basically good, neutral, or evil, and each has a somewhat different play experiences, particularly between good and evil), and the game is very non-linear. You also have a great deal of latitude on your play-style, although the game revolves around combat. The game comes on two DVDs ... the first one has Fallout 3, while the second one contains the five add-on packs. When installing, you'll be given an option to check data files corresponding to each game. Be sure to check them all; if you don't (or at least Broken Steel), they won't install and you won't get the new level cap (raised from 20 to 30) or new perks. You can always go back and do it later, but it's easier to do it when first installing the game. One caveat ... the game does not officially support Windows 7, as it was released before Windows 7 came along. The game works, but a lot of people, myself included, have had the game freeze or crash on them. At first, it was happening about once an hour or so, which I can live with. But it suddenly got worse. At one point the game was literally locking up on me every 30 seconds. I downloaded new drivers and re-loaded the most current patch, which seemed to help somewhat but didn't get rid of the problem. Finally, I read that running the game in windowed mode might help, and it has ... I've played about twelve hours running in windowed mode without any crashes. Note that you have to select "windowed" mode from within the game. Run the falloutlauncher.exe from folder where the game installed, and then click on "options". From there, put a check in the box that says "windowed". You may need to adjust your screen resolution to get it near "full screen" on your display. Finally, after that, I went to my taskbar on the bottom of my screen and went to properties and hid taskbar, so it wouldn't cover up some info on my screen when playing the game. You don't need to do this to get the game to run properly, it just kept the taskbar from covering some the bottom part of the playing screen. But Fallout 3 now runs flawlessly for me in Windows 7. If it starts to crash again, I'll come back and update this review.) This is a great purchase and a tremendous value if you like this type of action/Role-Playing Game. It's funny, well-plotted, well written, and offers hours of game play and replay. A big five stars. ... show more

  • Solution to problem with Windows 7; Great game but better with cheats
Platform For Display: PC Edition: Game of the Year
HOW TO PLAY ON WINDOWS 7: For those having trouble with this game on Windows 7 where the game freezes after 1-10 minutes, here's how to fix it: The problem lies with hyper-threading. To fix it you need to use only one core. Execute "msconfig" (from the Start Menu's search field), go to the "Boot" tab, then Advanced Options and set the number of processors to 1. PRAISE: Great open environment for exploring, very nicely rendered characters and creatures. Great characters and a great story that makes you want to find out what happens next. I had bought this game for the PS3 but it was proving to be too difficult (at the Normal level) so I decided to get the PC version instead to get access to the cheats. Now, with some cheats turned on it has become more fun and less frustrating. This game's hacking is the most intellectually challenging and fun I have come across among all the games I have played. You have to get a pencil and paper to solve the hacking word puzzle. Blind luck will not help you. Getting this version is cheaper than getting the game and DLCs separately. COMPLAINTS: The environment is quite dull with shades of grey everywhere but that was probably intentional to fit the mood of a nuclear wasteland. Still, the aesthetics could have been made more pleasing. I feel that this game punishes the player unfairly. If you get injured you can drink but that will get you irradiated in which case you need to get Rad-X but that costs bottle-caps (the currency of Fallout 3) and there never seem to be enough around. Furthermore, having a level cap is unfair. You can only build up your character to a certain level which means there will be SPECIAL abilities you won't get access to. Lock-picking is a frustrating chore. You need bobby-pins but they are scarce and break easily, so the player has to save and reload often. The same with hacking. If you fail and didn't save before starting, you then get locked out permanently. You can get a SPECIAL ability to hack locked computers but again that can only be done once. Therefore, this game is more fun and fair when played with cheats. With the cheats you can raise the level cap, give yourself enough bobby-pins and unlock any locked terminal. You can get all the cheat codes here: [...] ... show more

  • Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition
Platform For Display: PC Edition: Game of the Year
Fallout 3 is a great game. It has fun intense gameplay and a wide range of various weapons, creatures, locations, quests, and people in the Capital wasteland. There are skills that you can upgrade your character with such as speech and repair. The game allows you to choose your own path be good, evil,or neutral which can give you special dialogue checks and features. The only unfortunate con of fallout is the large numbers of bugs that can cause freezes and game crashes. When i first got fallout 3 I had a problem with it crashing in the beginning I had to change some of fallout.ini files to fix it to run on my windows 7. Fortunately most of the problems can be fixed. But the thing that fallout excels at the most would have to be the atmosphere that it has. What I mean by this is when you are trapped in a rusted vault low on health, ammo and the condition of the weapon is also low, with super mutants everywhere while listen to classic music which cause you to improvise and use skill that you never use to slowly inch your way to a safe area is the best thing about fallout. It theme is based around the 1950s view of what the future would be like. Another thing that fallout excels at (if you have the PC version) is the massive mod community. There are mods that can greatly improve the game, like ones that adds radioactive rain and weathers effects, also ones that can make the faces and environment look extremely realist. There are mods that can add new locations and quests, new creatures, new weapons, new perks, ones that can make the game extremely hard and there are ones that fix allot of bugs and crashes. All in all fallout 3 is a great and unforgettable experience and is one of the best RPG games ever! If you loved the previous amazing fallouts you are most likely love this one. I am sorry for any errors in grammar or spelling ... show more
