  • For $20? Easy 5 stars.
I was pleasantly surprised by this. Yes, the only settings are tone, volume, and gain. You can get a pretty good variety of sounds by using the gain in conjunction with the volume knob on your guitar. The tone is a little on the darker side, so I actually had it turned fully clockwise, and I turned my tone pots to the brightest position, and it still was not at all bright. I rarely turn the tone or volume knobs on my guitar fully up. If I turn the gain all the way down, I can turn my volume knob to full. Yes, you can crank the gain knob on the F1R to the max and get a pretty distorted sound. with my guitar all the way up and the gain all the way up, there was a lot of break up that was frankly too much to use. But start backing off the volume on your guitar, and you can get rid of a lot of the noise that was destroying the tone. I personally like from a clean tone to a sound that is just starting to break up a little. You can get some variations in tone by using a light touch on the gain and volume pot on your guitar, and boosting one while cutting the other, and then switch to boosting the one and reducing the other. You can tweak the tone and get some good variety. Even with the gain at more than I would normally use, it sounded pretty nice. There seems to be at least a little compression. I am using AKG K240 studio monitors, and the F1R drove them easily. I tried both single and double coil pickups. I could go on, but I will simply say it is $20, and I can get a tone I like. It is a bargain for what you get. ... show more

  • Fun dirty sound
Low cost headphone amp that works. It is high gain, so if you’re wanting a clean sound you ain’t going to get it. Fun practice tool, would be 5-star if it was rechargeable or the plug was not fixed position.

  • Decent Gain / Distortion - Muddy, Flat Clear
My basis for comparison is Vox's series of excellent headphone practice amps, and those cost significantly more for a reason. This is an inexpensive version of the same concept, and while it is true that you get what you pay for, I think you could do worse (which is to say: you could play an unplugged electric...). First let me say that this thing *does* work. It powered on, it plugged in, yada yada yada. So if you're worried about whether or not it will function: for this reviewer, that ground is covered. Huzzah! Second, I will acknowledge that the overdrive works pretty well and actually sounds like a proper overdrive pedal - maybe not one with refined controls, but I think it's no par with some of the old Ibanez Soundtanks. I've had actual amplifiers that, to my ear, sounded worse (Yes, I'm talking about an old Crate practice amp's "Overdrive" button - IYKYK). Third, let me get down to some gripes. I know weight & feel don't really *matter* per se, but this thing just feels cheap right out of the box. Flimsy-feeling plastic, a rough seam / join...and I think we all expect that jack to pivot. Well my friend: it does not. I can only imagine what a headache it is to plug this into a strat-style guitar. For my PRS, with the square jack on the bottom, it was nothing. for an LP style perpendicular jack, I'm sure it's fine a swell. I'm not so sure about a fender angled jack. The printing on the case is hard to read. Remember how on Metallica's Black album you had to sort of squint and move your head to see the design? This is simlar. It's not black-on-black, it's very muted charcoal grey on black. Since the unit is on the bottom of my guitar, I had to actually unplug it to see what everything did. I noticed that the tone knob affected the volume on mine - it absolutely should not do that. Like I said in my title: the gain / overdrive / distortion sounds okay. I am taking into account that this is a headphone amp, so let's not confuse it with or compare it to a vintage Marshall stack. it sounds okay - it's fine for a bit of quiet practice or idle noodling. With gain turned all the way down...I was not impressed. The sound reminded me more of stringing rubber bands across a shoebox to make a "guitar" when I was a kid than anya ctual instrument. I exaggerate...but the sound was just not melodic. So: if you're looking for something cheap for a bit of "classical rock" (their descriptor, not mine) practice, this is fine. If you care about your tone even in quiet practice mode, keep shopping. ... show more

  • Practice Electric Guitar Quietly, Anywhere
Here's a clever little gadget for electric guitar players who need to practice without making a lot of noise. This Flatsons mini headphone amp plugs directly into your guitar's output jack. Then, you just plug your regular headphones into it, and you can rock out without anyone else hearing. It's designed to give you a classic distortion sound. It's super portable, making it perfect for practicing late at night, when you're traveling, or just warming up backstage. It also has an AUX jack, so you can plug in your phone or another audio source to play along with your favorite songs or backing tracks. It's a really handy tool for making practice more convenient. ... show more

  • Not bad but could use a few tweaks
I will admit this is a good practice tool when you just want to plug in and zone out without having to plug up to your rig. It was very easy to use and worked right out of the box, but of course there could be a few tweaks to this, that could make it shine! First of all, bigger knobs to work on the unit! It felt like it was made for little kids, or better yet, newborns! The knobs are really that small! While I do understand you get what you pay for, if they could clean up the overall sound of this, it would be a 5-star item. It takes a while to dial in the right sound between the unit and your guitar to find the sweet spot of this item! I had to play with the dials to get a doable clean sound, and then with the gain, it is super muddy! Is it playable? Yes, but not great on the ears, as a lot is lost in the pure muddy sound. Fix those and tweak it a bit, and it could be a 5-star item. ... show more
