  • Great Versatility, Good Sound, Poor Footboard (GTX-7)
Size: 100 Watt
The Fender Mustang GTX-100 is a very good amp. I have primarily played acoustic guitar (6 & 12 steel string; Classical nylon/carbon string; wood & steel Resonators; and Ukuleles) and have just gotten into playing electrics. I bought a Fender Strat AmPro II. It is a very nice instrument as well. But what Amp to pair it with was a dilemma. The options for types (Tube, Digital/SS) and the overwhelming array of pedals available made the choices endless. If you want to replicate the sound of your favorite artists; well first off have their talent and skill. Secondly their equipment and set-up. Any Amp will transmit the sound of the guitar adequately, but will do little to shape it the way you want. This Amp has many different Amp profiles (Fender, Marshall, Orange, Vox, etc.) - over 40. It has dozens of effect pedals, not to mention the combinations. It becomes exponential. There are downloadable profiles set by other musicians (Fender Tone app), and users that add to the sounds available. It is really, really impressive. The Amp has really great sound. Side by side with a true, or vintage tube it might seem lacking; but, on its own it is great. Clean configuration is very nice. Reverb is very nice too. Compression and Overdrive gets the sound raunchy, and Flangers, Chorus, and Phase shifters make for some really wild sound from the Strat. Also at 100 Watts (Digital, certainly not tube watts) is freaking loud! I do wish Fender had put an attenuator like on the Tone Master Deluxe and Twin Reverb Amps, but the Master volume and guitar volume controls work well. It can replicate tube break-up distortion even at low volumes unlike a real tube Amp (that might include a noise complaint summons)... Again, if you download the Fender Tone app you can play for months shaping hundreds of sounds and replicating favorites. The Mustang GTX-100 also comes with the GTX-7 Footboard. This is the only drawback to this device. While it works good, and is mostly useful, it is cheap. There is a scraping, or rasping sound when stomping the foot switches. Calling Fender their Tech Support said; "That is normal". They suggested I use Contact Cleaner. Well, that doesn't work for metal to metal scraping. Otherwise, It is a good starter amp for sounds and effects. I would recommend this to anyone not sure of which Amp to get starting out as it is reasonably priced at $500 US. It sounds great, and has more pedals and effects built in than the average starter would want to spend Ala carte. Later on after developing my own defined sound, I'd consider dropping more money on a better Amp and the effects I truly want and need. Until then, I seemingly have them all. ... show more

  • Bang for your buck!
Size: 100 Watt
PROS: - 12" Clestion "special design" full range flat response (FRFR) speaker - 100 watt - connectivity (Bluetooth audio, USB, stereo XLR & effect loop) - intuitive user interface and operation both in amp and thru app - seamless operation/sync via app - full featured on amp (i.e. app doesn't add features) - one of the best if not the best foot switch included with amp - lightweight (at around 22 lbs it weights about the same as my 8"/5-watt Fender Vibro Champ XD) - lots of customizable effects, amps, cabs - WiFi for easy firmware updates - cloud backups, community patches - best tuner I've ever had in terms on terms if accuracy and stability - 60 second looper - includes famous Fender amps/cabs models as well as other known brands CONS: - nothing major in my opinion really - out of the box most the presets need to adjusted for my taste one way or another (having too much bass in most cases) but thankfully it's highly customizable - only 10 empty slots for patches but you can modify existing presets however you want Love this amp! the CONS are not even that bad. But you need to understand what it is you're getting. This is a digital modeling amp so don't expect the same tone and sound characteristics compared to the gear it is attempting to imitate. I would however, consider this assortment of gears modeled a good basis for what to expect out of the real equipment in terms of sound and feature set (meaning, is it a high gain amp, how knob settings interact, or just compare one amp to another). Yes, it models limited functionality and the sound is a bit off but come on, this is a $500 amp trying to sound like 10's of 1000's of dollars worth of legendary amps. This is more of a swiss army knife of an amp, I'd say it's mostly for intermediate practice, recording on your PC, but it's high enough power that could do small gigs. It's just a fun amp! I left beginners out just because learning the instrument could easily take a back seat to all the features and effects you can mess with. With the Bluetooth audio you can stream your favorite song and play over it and it sounds great since it's a FRFR speaker. The foot switch allows you to scroll thru the presets, or it lets you use it as a stomp switch to individually control the first 5 effects in the chain within each preset. With the exception of wah, cry baby or other expression pedals, there is not much need to invest in multi effects with this amp. So, unless you have the extra dollars, know exactly what tone you are looking for and are willing to live with that one tone offered by a particular unit then this is a very flexible, versatile and cost effective. ... show more
