  • The most frustrating, yet best game in the series
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch
Beautiful game, even on switch. This game shows what kinda graphical horsepower the aging switch has, and it does it at a steady frame rate. Best physics yet in a mudrunner title. Everything handles and feels better than snowrunner. Be prepared for a lot of frustration at times as this game is punishing….but in a fun way! If you feel like you breezed through snowrunner, then give this entry a try. Not as big as the other titles, but the gameplay and overall challenge makes up for it. Only downside is the vehicle unlock system, every vehicle outside of the initial 3 are recovery missions and hard ones at that. Overall my favorite off-road sim to date, and it’s on my favorite system. Give it a go, you won’t be disappointed……frustrated maybe, but not disappointed… ... show more

  • Managing Expectations - An Expeditions Switch Review
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch
First off, the bullet lists: *Pros* • Wide open spaces to explore • Deep vehicle customization • More fun for those of us who prefer Scouting over Hauling • Cool discoveries littered about the maps that open up more tasks, even in the starting area map • Map sizes comparable to Mudrunner and Snowrunner • Co-op will eventually be available • Mods will be available at a later date *Cons* • Navigating the new UI takes time to learn • Some forms of directions are unclear • No co-op available at launch • Graphics are a bit muddy (pun unintended) *Middles* • More planning/budgeting required than in MR or SR • More reliance on Air Drops • Returning to headquarters auto-sells the additional equipment you’ve purchased (Jack screws/Anchors/etc) If you’ve come to the Nintendo Switch looking for deliciously crisp graphics, I have bad news…it’s a game for Nintendo Switch. While the Mudrunner and Snowrunner games looked decent at their launch, this game has some blurry/muddy graphics in certain areas, and is going to need a few patches from the developer to really smooth things out. The good thing about the Switch version: Saber/Focus appear to be invested in its longevity just like they are with the other versions of the game, so I doubt this will be a one-and-done release. And given their track record for supporting the other two titles in the series on Switch, I feel confident we’ll be seeing some tweaks and fixes in due time. Without getting into the philosophical debate about whether publishers these days are selling unfinished products at launch, let’s just say that I fully believe that some patience will be rewarded. Keep in mind that Snowrunner didn’t release in perfect shape on any platform, and that co-op was more or less broken upon its release. I’ve put about 10 hours into this game now, and I’ve finally fallen into the flow state of playing this game. The menus are very different from the other two titles, and require a bit of unlearning to free yourself from the expectation that you’ll simply pick it up and play like you never left Snowrunner. Once those are learned, it’s on to the planning/budgeting phase; I can not stress enough that if you do not plan well before setting out on an Expedition, it will not only cost you wasted time and disappointment, but it will cost you money that you may need to purchase equipment for later expeditions (this is actually a lot like real life). Learning to buy only what you need will help minimize loss and still give you the edge you need. I never leave for an expedition without a winch anchor…if I buy nothing else, I’m bringing a set of those with me. Where I have subtracted a star is the lack of clearer explanations on how to carry out tasks or how many items come with the purchase of what seems to be only one item…putting one winch anchor in your inventory, for instance, actually gives you several to use (4 per unit in your inventory, I believe). This lack of clarity has led to me nearly bankrupting myself in the first three hours until I finally looked deeper and came to understand how the system works. There are also some missions that don’t elaborate well (or maybe I’ve missed some text) on how they work…for instance, “Earthy Vibes” doesn’t show you exactly where to go to run a seismic survey, but there’s a meter counter in the top right that acts as a “You’re getting warmer/colder” meter of sorts. Took me two tries on that mission before it made sense. I’ve had a lot of fun customizing my trucks and noticing the very real physics changes that come with the purchases…bigger tires make a more bouncy ride but allow you to crawl over slightly higher obstacles, and lower suspensions do seem to help with fuel consumption even if they aren’t the best for off-roading. Overall, this game scratches my itch for a sense of discovery in games that you won’t often get from shooters or action titles that aren’t open-world. I bought the game on Switch because I like playing in handheld mode with better battery life. I knew there would be graphical trade-offs running a 2024 game on a 2017 console that was underpowered to begin with. If you like exploration that can sometimes require a bit of patience while learning to crawl before you walk, this game can be very rewarding. It will need some future patches and polish, no doubt, but in its current form I have found it stable and entertaining. The UI and sometimes-confusing directions are my only real gripe as they can sometimes hinder the flow of play, but I’m glad I purchased Expeditions on Switch, and I’ll no doubt get tons of hours of enjoyment from it as I did with its predecessors. ... show more

  • A Definite Step Down From Snowrunner
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch
I’ve definitely put more hours into Snowrunner than any other game on the Switch and purchased all four yearly DLC’s. The biggest problem with the Snowrunner is the bugginess and I finally quit while playing year four. My big question was if Expeditions was more stable and whether or not it was an advancement over Snowrunner. I’d say the graphics in Expeditions are on par with Snowrunner but the landscapes are far less varied. Arizona, for example, is all rocky terrain with so many areas for your truck to tip over. I wouldn’t be surprised if Expeditions was simply built using the exact same engine as Snorunner. The strange thing is that although Expeditions is the successor to Snowrunner there are inexplicable changes that seem completely unnecessary and don’t improve the game. This even includes button mapping changes. There are changes that make the game a bit deeper including having items that you bring along on missions and choosing NPC characters to be involved but I’m not sure if these really add to the enjoyment. Snowrunner could be an extremely challenging and time consuming game but I managed to 100% many of the areas even as I fought with the crippling bugs in the game. Thus far, Expeditions appears to be even more challenging. There are a lot of long drives from point A to point B with tons of rocky terrain and plenty of areas ripe for tipping. This is an absolute recipe for disaster and high levels of stress. Not only can you tip over near your destination but you can run out of fuel if you don’t manage it well. The game does include a jack to flip your vehicle upright but flipping the truck can cause significant damage and you might immediately flip back over if it drops you on an incline. If you can’t get the car righted you have to start all over again. Unfortunately, I’m also hitting bugs. In Snowrunner, I’d have trucks disappear entirely and accomplished tasks get undone to the point where I couldn’t take it anymore but I’d put a massive volume of time in before I threw in the towel. Thus far, Expeditions has been limited to freezing up for a time and one hard reboot but Snowrunner seemed ok for a long time before things hit the fan. What I can say is that I’m just not having as much fun with Expeditions as I did with Snowrunner and it does not feel like an advancement in the series whether it be in visuals or gameplay. ... show more

  • Horrible mess
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch
This game has been a let down. I really enjoyed the previous Mudrunner games. I know the graphics won't compare to other consoles, but these are just horrible. I don't recall the other Switch Mudrunner games looking this bad. Plus there are areas where the ground textures are missing. So it looks as though you are driving on thin air. There are waypoints that just won't register when you get to them. It's just a mess. ... show more
