NATIONAL BESTSELLER NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS' CHOICE "Hypnotic...a haunting romance about desire, obsession, and ambition that is sure to get your heart rate up." —Time Magazine "R.O. Kwon’s Exhibit is, hands down, the sexiest novel of the year."—Vogue "A highly sensory experience...lingers like a mysterious, multihued bruise." —The New York Times "One of the most buzzed- about books of the year…fiery, sexual, and undeniably original." —Poets & Writers From bestselling author R. O. Kwon, an exhilarating, blazing-hot novel about a woman caught between her desires and her life. At a lavish party in the hills outside of San Francisco, Jin Han meets Lidija Jung and nothing will ever be the same for either woman. A brilliant young photographer, Jin is at a crossroads in her work, in her marriage to her college love Philip, and in who she is and who she wants to be. Lidija is an alluring, injured world-class ballerina on hiatus from her ballet company under mysterious circumstances. Drawn to each other by their intense artistic drives, the two women talk all night. Cracked open, Jin finds herself telling Lidija about an old familial curse, breaking a lifelong promise. She's been told that if she doesn’t keep the curse a secret, she risks losing everything; death and ruin could lie ahead. As Jin and Lidija become more entangled, they realize they share more than the ferocity of their ambition, and begin to explore hidden desires. Something is ignited in Jin: her art, her body, and her sense of self irrevocably changed. But can she avoid the specter of the curse? Vital, bold, powerful, and deeply moving, Exhibit asks: how brightly can you burn before you light your life on fire? Read more

  • The commas are the sexiest part (complimentary)
You might argue that the queer bondage scenes are the sexiest part of Kwon’s sophomore novel—but I would argue that honor actually goes to Kwon’s peculiar use of commas. When photographer-with-artistic-block Jin Han meets injured ballerina Lidija Jung at a party, she finds the inspiration she has ceased to find with her husband Philip, who suddenly wants kids. Jin divulges a folkloric family secret, Lidija responds with kink, and it’s on—but for how long, and with what consequences? I think I preferred Kwon’s first novel The Incendiaries, but Exhibit is excellent—especially because Kwon is such an unusual writer. Her prose style is so careful, somehow blunt and tender at the same time. Remarkable stuff. This review was originally published on my blog. ... show more

  • A Fast and Gripping Read
4 stars The central relationship will appeal to many readers, but it's the connection between the two women and their respective art forms that really raises the stakes in this most recent effort from R. O. Kwon. First, I'm going to say that I love the way this writer infuses queerness and sexuality. The characters are always layered and never pigeonholed into limited roles or representations, and folks who seem to be living pretty typical existences in some ways can also go to - hypothetically - gatherings that may be shocking to those who do not frequent such affairs. I really enjoy learning more about these aspects of Kwon's characters in general, and that feature comes through clearly in _Exhibit_. Jin and Lidija, a photographer and ballerina respectively, meet at a party and find that they have their artistry in common but also that they have a unique connection with each other. They also both hold vital secrets, and it is the discovery of these hidden truths and implications of those revelations that bring on major shifts in both characters' lives. As usual, Kwon's style aptly matches the motifs. Structurally, Kwon's choices may read as too experimental for readers hoping for a basic b kind of novel, but girl, that's not why you crack this author's books. I tore through this in almost one sitting and will both (1) re-read this soon and (2) listen to the audiobook when it's available. Now that I know where the characters are going, I want to spend more time recounting their journey. This is a unique read from an author who's becoming quite well known for exactly that. I enjoyed it and will continue to queue Kwon's work on sight. ... show more

  • sexless, drivel
i was drawn to buy this thin 200 page book the size of a 5x8 postcard because of a thumbnail in the times book review promising an erotic journey into dominance and submission. if only. if only the author, who also got a full page in the same issue of the times book review, knew something about what she was purportedly writing about. and if only she could write. the book reads like a writing-school assignment to tell but not describe. page 70 "...she had a side job. One client of hers asked that she bring a friend, to watch. ...It was fetish work. I enjoyed it. He was tied up, and she hit him. I went back a couple times. Jin, I'm saying I had fun." or try this on p 91..."Lidja hit me with a belt, over my clothing, while i braced against the wall."... On page 97 she says "did you buy the riding crop? It's Neils. "He rides horses?" Yes.......... On page 156 is, i guess, the money shot. "Jin, i love telling you what to do." "I'm on my period." "So am I," she said, taking off my shirt....She guided finger. Do this. Oh, like that. Lidia's thighs, pliant flesh. Shaved quills ..."Legs wide," she said. "It's not worth the guilt." Liija placed a hand on my mouth. "Such a bad girl," she said. Losing control with base urges." ........Purple prose? worth $25? first year composition 101. Words with no theme, words words words. blah blah blah ... show more

  • Favorite book of 2024!
I tore through this, unable to put it down once I started. It was so sexy while also moving me to tears, with sentences that kept stopping me for their beauty. Kwon has written a modern classic. I will be reading it again very soon.

  • How did this get published?
I bought into the hype for this author and this book. Just... no. It's so pretentious and obsessed with itself. There is nothing erotic or sexy; it reads very cold and clinical actually. All the characters are flat, the dialogue feels stilted and fake, and the plot is nonexistent.
