An excellent and engaging read. For a relatively short book, there's a shocking amount of detail, but they're all very well organized and easy to access. Scotty also does a good job of catering to people of different levels of car-expertise. Chapter 1 starts from the very beginning: deciding on which car to buy. Chapter 2 gives detailed advice on where to search for the car. Chapter 3 is a long chapter (also my favorite one) where he tells you everything you should check on the car BEFORE you take it to the mechanic. He even divides this section into three levels of difficulty, for people who want to do the absolute minimum, the average person, and a gear nut. This is followed by Chapter 4 on getting the mechanic to check out your car. Chapter 5 is on the art of purchasing the car, and of course, haggling. Everything was good, except I disagree when Scotty says "cash is king". Yes, this is true, but in 2020, showing this hand early might actually give you a worse deal. In this age of aggressive internet pricing, the dealers now usually derive the majority of their profits from financing and other add-ons. So fronting that you'll be paying cash oftentimes put you at a disadvantage during car-price negotiations. You can do more research on this yourself. Chapter 6 is another one of my favorites and covers maintenance. Again this is broken into "do this absolutely please", followed by a section on the components that needs less care. He understands some people prefer outsourcing most of the work to a mechanic, and some people take a DIY approach. There's something for both crowds here. Overall, a stellar read. Thanks Scotty! EVERYONE should read this when buying a used car. In fact, they should read it if they just OWN a car, because it gives so much fundamental knowledge on how to monitor a car's basic needs and what it takes to be a vigilant owner in terms of overseeing the maintenance over the life of a vehicle. Following the author's advice could save you thousands in repair bills if you take control pro-actively of his recommended maintenance. I wish there were more 'hard-core' knowledgeable mechanics like Scotty out there, he is truly a gem. Buy this book and above all, READ IT, it could save you thousands!! ... show more

Excellent book that discusses car maintenance as well as how to select a used car.....hint: if you only had to do one thing it would be change your oil. Pick up this book to learn more. Scotty rocks!

Classic Scotty. Fun to read using voice as heard in YouTube videos. Advice is excellent and very well organized. Editing and formatting is fair. One consistently missed word is “modem” cars instead of modern. Or, maybe it’s my bifocals.

This is precisely what I was looking for to help my in my car buying journey. Not only is he full of invaluable experience, but this book alone will save you minimally $10,000+ or more in common mistakes people make on their cars, new or used.     • Useful. Easy to read. Dated. Wordy.
Easy to read and understand. Useful. This was written in 1994. The information is still relevant. No discussion of some of the modern ways to inspect vehicles such as a paint thickness meter. The book is wordy for the information presented.
