Description

The Berliner Philharmoniker celebrate their founding day (May 1st, 1882) every year in a European city of cultural significance The venue for the 2018 EUROPAKONZERT is an architectural gem: the Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth, one of the few remaining original Baroque theatres, which was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. Built in wood in the middle of the 18th century, the opera house is one of the few original theatre buildings of the era. In 1872, Richard Wagner conducted Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Margravial Opera House. By performing works by these two composers at the same venue for the traditional Europakonzert , the Berliner Philharmoniker pay homage to the history of the city and its Baroque theatre. For the first time, the Europakonzert is conducted by Paavo Järvi, who caused a sensation not least with his recordings of Beethoven’s symphonies. The soloist is seasoned Bayreuth performer Eva-Maria Westbroek.

  • A high quality production which should give much satisfaction to anyone interested in the programme
Region free Blu-Ray review as received The immediate impression received when playing the Blu-ray disc is the remarkable clarity delivered by the cameras. This is rapidly followed by the same precision and clarity of the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.0 soundtrack (also available in stereo). The concert has been recorded in Bayreuth and the choice of the Wesendonck lieder, a set of 5 songs, as the soloist focus makes the connection between Bayreuth and Wagner explicit. The songs were settings of poems written by Mathilde Wesendonck, the wife of one of Wagner’s patrons, and suggest a torrid, verging on morbid, intense relationship (not necessarily physical) between Mathilde and the composer. It is speculated that the musical consequence of this relationship led to the opera Tristan and Isolde. It is unlikely that the poems were written in close sequence and the settings are probably best thought of as a set of five related songs rather than as a song cycle. Whatever the background, they certainly receive a passionate delivery by Eva-Maria Westbroek which reflects her view of the poems and the music as described in her bonus interview. Paavo Jarvi is also heard in a bonus interview where he explains his preference for the 4th symphony among the complete set of Beethoven’s nine. His passion for the music, and his exploration and presentation of the music’s ‘wit’, is easy to comprehend in the performance of the symphony. The two overtures receive the same commitment both from the conductor and the orchestra. The performances of the Beethoven works are not far from those that one might experience from a good ‘period’ orchestra, only on a larger scale. It is certainly not in the smoothed contours which may still be associated in some listeners’ memories of this orchestra’s previous style under Karajan for example. They are simply fine examples of a modern orchestra and conductor delivering the works in the full knowledge and acceptance of current interpretive understanding of the appropriate historic musical setting. There is a major bonus documentary which delves into the past and present musical associations of modern Bayreuth. This is both instructive and entertaining and a good example of an excellent supporting documentary. The one disappointment is the lack of leaflet background or text to the Wesendonck Lieder as described above. Even more disappointing is the lack of subtitles during the songs. Fortunately all of this is easily available online and purchasers, such as this one, can easily make up their own ‘sleeve-notes’ plus translated song texts. This does not therefore detract too much from what, in all other respects, is a high quality production and should give much satisfaction to anyone interested in the programme. ... show more
