  • Nice upgrade from basic coffee makers
Color: Metallic Silver
The media could not be loaded. I upgraded from a basic drip coffee maker, and the difference is huge. Espresso tastes much richer, and I can also make lattes and cappuccinos now. The steam wand takes a little practice but works well. Overall, it’s a nice step up without being overly complicated.

The media could not be loaded. The machine features a pressure gauge along with time and temperature displays, which makes it very easy to monitor the brewing process. You can also customize the grinding time as well as the extraction time and temperature. Overall, it offers great control and flexibility for making coffee at home. ... show more

  • Works well.
So far, so good. It warms up quick and I just learned about the "manual" button that allows you to brew as much as you want. Time will tell how long it lasts.

  • I wanted to like this machine but ...
I ordered this machine since it was smaller than most of the full featured semi-automatic expresso machines and we wanted to use it while traveling in our RV. I have been using expresso machines for 20+ years after getting hooked on some great coffee while traveling in Europe. I have owned at least 5 different machines over the years from semi-automatic to automatic (grind, tamp, and brew no hands.) These machines ranged from $150 to $3300. They have all had their quirks and this machine is no exception. First, the machine comes with lots of accessories, frankly more than most people will ever use. The machine itself is sharp looking and has several super clear digital displays. It is compact compared to some of the well known brands that cost 2-3 times as much. Clear instructions accompany the unit and it will get you going quickly. Make sure you watch the initial setup video on the Amazon page, it does a good job of showing the process. The initial setup suggests running some water through the process a few times without using grinds just to get it going. I found that getting the bean hopper properly oriented was a bit frustrating. The porta-filter is also a bit strange. It has two portion size inserts. Most porta-filter cups press into the handle, these have a small nub that must be lined up at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and then pressed in or pryed out. They fit loosely so it doesn't have a high end feel. Other machines have single wall and dual wall inserts, this seems to be only the single wall which is better suited to a more experienced operator. There is no removable wing nut to dispense the drip, it is all one piece and it also requires using the supplied dosing attachment to secure it under the grinder. I found not using this will result in the porta-filter falling while grinding. I wasn't a fan of this as it requires extra steps to grinding, removing, and tamping. Usually porta-filters feel solid and heavy in your hand and they cleanly lock into place both for the grind and for the extraction, this setup feels cheap and makes you unsure if you have things snapped in correctly. To make proper expresso you need a finer grind. I tried using settings between 7 and 0. Nothing short of 0 (the finest setting) comes even close to creating the powdery grind necessary for a good extract. I have a standalone burr grinder that I had to use to get a reasonable cup as the built-in grinder just doesn't seem up to the task. See the photo comparing the grind size of 0 to my standalone grinder at like 5. The machine can be configured for a timed grind and is easy to select the grind time. Unfortunately, you have to press the button vs just doing a quick push of the handle to start a preset grind or holding the handle to engage the grinder for as long as you want. If you need just a touch more grinds you have to mess with the configuration and this is just an awkward non-user friendly process just to get a bit more coffee to drop. The provided tamper is underwhelming. It is light and has a smooth bottom vs a textured bottom which I find makes it easier (faster) to spin and level prior to pressing down. I actually found myself using the plastic tamper/spoon tool which seemed to do a better job. The extraction process has a pressure gauge from 0-20 bars. It is missing any kind of range shading to suggest if you are under or over extracting. I think higher end machines actually measure back pressure so you get feedback to know if you tamped too light or too hard. Setting temperature and extraction times for single and double cup is simple, but I had to mess with them to reduce the temp from max and to extend the extraction time to get a "long pull". After extraction, and unlocking the porta-filter you should get a dryish puck of extracted coffee. After at least 15 cups I can say most of them came out soupy when I used the built-in grinder. Using my standalone grinder, I consistently got solid pucks so it is clearly the built-in grinder not being fine enough. Removing the grinds from the porta-filter was also a hassle, usually you can just invert it and "knock" it on the edge of a cup and it falls out. I was always scraping and digging the grinds out. Not the end of the world, but it just makes the process slower and more tedious. The unit also comes with a hot water and steam wand. You twist the side knob to get water or steam depending if you press the steam button. One quirk is that when you first turn it on, they suggest using some hot water to pre-warm you cups, but the wand won't dispense unless you push the steam button. It works as expected if your first action is to do a single or double cup. Essentially you need to press one of the three buttons (single, double, steam) to engage the heating element after power on. The first few cups tasted really bitter and due mostly I think to the built-in grinder. I did manage to get some nice crema when I used the 0 grind setting or my standalone grinder. I'm not sure who this machine is for. If you are a beginner, you'll be very disappointed with the quality and taste. If you are more well versed like me, you will be unhappy with the quality and features. Either way, you'll need to also pick up a standalone grinder as the built-in one isn't up to the job. My advice would be to either get a good beginner machine or spend a bit more to get something higher end than this unit. ... show more
