  • great mid-range unit, even gave early warning on laser
Style: 8500 X50
I bought this because my current driving situation involves a 3 hour commute twice a week and I figured with that much highway exposure my chances of a ticket were probably pretty high. I had a cheaper radar detector by Whistler, but haven't been that impressed. My in-laws are big Escort fans, so I decided to give this one a try. The unit has a lot of features that I really like. The mute button on the power cord is handy for muting the alert once you have figured out the source. Also, the unit has an "auto-mute" feature that turns the volume down on the alarm after the first few chirps which helps with being annoying. Also, in addition to the normal "city" and "highway" modes, you can choose "auto" which lets the unit decide where you are and what is a real alert. For the most part this works beautifully and saves me the trouble of switching. I like that the display identified the strength of the signal and the TYPE of radar that is being detected. You start to learn to take some bands more seriously than others and to predict which alarms are real and which aren't. Also, the range seems to be really well. I have had it identify troopers 0.5-1 mile away. Once, while driving down the interstate, it made a noise I hadn't heard before and identified the band as "laser." Sure enough about 500 feet later I saw an unmarked state police car parked in a clump of trees in the median. I later found out that laser is relatively uncommon, very expensive, and hard to detect. This unit did perfectly, though. Finally, I wanted to address the one complaint I have even though it's probably not really a fair criticism. The unit goes off constantly in Illinois because the state has seen fit to equip EVERY construction sign with a radar gun. One stretch that I drive has literally a dozen of these signs scattered over about 60 miles and the constant beeping is very annoying. Sometimes I just unplug the unit and drive without it through this area. But, like I said, I'm not sure this is fair. The signs aren't cops, but they do actually have real radar, so I'm not sure there is any way the 8500 could be expected to tell. One last thing, be sure that you understand that while this unit may save you a speeding ticket, that if you get pulled over for any other reason, the police officer is 0% likely to give you a warning once he sees your radar detector. That's just the fact of the matter. Overall, I have been very impressed with this unit and recommend it over the chapter units I have tried in the past. I know detectors can go for up to $700 or more, and I can't attest to what those are like, but this one does everything I expected it to splendidly. ... show more

  • Excellent Investment!
Style: 8500 X50
I’m a student who was traveling 2 hours once a week and was worried about getting speeding tickets. I purchased the Passport 8500 X50 radar detector to assist me in monitoring for potential speed traps. I believe the Passport 8500 X50 would be an excellent investment for an individual that travels on a regular basis due to its reliability and functions. One great feature that I’ve found valuable is the ability to place the detector anywhere on your windshield because it comes with a windshield mount and long smartcord. The smartcord also has a mute button, which makes it easy to mute if the detector picks up a false alarm. The Passport 8500 picks up four different types of radar: X-Band, K-Band, LASER, and Ka-Band. I’ve found from my experience that Ka-Bands have identified a police officer 95% of the time. There is also a Highway mode, which is focused on all types of bands. Then there is a City mode, which lowers the sensitivity so that it doesn’t pick up automatic doors and other false alarms. Whenever I drive at night the red sensors are bright and distracting so there is a setting to dim the brightness. The Passport 8500 also comes with a solid traveling case, which makes it easy to take with you or keep it safe while not being used. This is my first experience with radar detectors but my passport has saved me at least 3 specific times from receiving a speeding ticket. The first time that I received an alert I was approximately 1.5 miles away from the police officer and was traveling at 20 MPH above the speed limit. This gave me plenty of time to decrease my speed before I actually went past the officer. That alone would’ve been roughly a $200 ticket and possibly suspension of my license. Compared to other radar detectors on the market I the Passport 8500 is an average price at $185. I feel the detector has paid for itself already. Once again, I would like to specify how satisfied I have been from the product and have recommended it to my friends and family. ... show more

  • it works well
I haven't used a radar detector for about 10 years since my old one broke, Recently got a few speeding tickets in past few years even had my licence suspended and now i try very hard not to speed, but It doesn't hurt to have one of these. I don't recommend speeding at all, but sometimes you can loose yourself like if you get a new car and you want to test it out on an empty highway, or if a good song comes on and you simply forget yourself only to get brought back to reality with flashing blue and red lights in the rear view mirror ........ time for a radar detector. If you got speeding tickets like i did there is no reason not to get a good radar detector and take out the guess work no matter how good you are spotting speed traps. The Escort S55 was the model I found that looked good and was within my budget. I didn't expect too much from it as it was a bit under $200.00 and many of the good ones where $500 + ( still much cheaper than the thousands I paid in tickets and fees). I must say I'm happy I bought this one. Proof is in the pudding This morning i was going a bit too fast and the unit was quite and all of the sudden it went wild beeping but i didn't see anything at all ( figured false alarm) about 30 seconds later beeping was getting faster finally at a constant beep and I saw two cop cars hidden. - It really works and I cant be happier ( I will still try hard and remind myself not to speed at most more than a few over the limit as its just not worth it safety and dollar wise) It comes with 2 suction cups attached to a small metal bracket that locks in to the unit stays very sturdy, my only concern is I wish there was a way to make these detectors not so visible from outside. ... show more
