  • Penetrates well
Size: 500 ml
If you use a good quality brush made for oil paint it applies easily and is readily absorbed into the wood. I would recommend at least two coats. It dries within 24 hrs and the satin version leaves a slight sheen.

  • Difficult to apply
Size: 1000 ml
Like other reviewers, I did not enjoy applying this finish. I applied over Epifanes high gloss varnish on a front door. While the varnish was a breeze to apply and left a beautiful, even, high-gloss finish, the matte finish was very difficult to brush evenly and began setting in seconds. This results in a hurried application which leaves an imperfect application. Another reviewer suggested using 85/15 ratio with thinner. I believe that's a wise suggestion. ... show more

  • So far so good
Size: 500 ml
I built an outdoor table out of cedar a couple years ago, and used a variety of finishings claiming to be weather proof. None of them lasted more than 2 months, with failures such as cracking, pealing of the finish, or greying of the wood. This year I am trying to refinish the table top with Epifanes. After carefully stripping away the old finish, I applied 6 coats of Epifanes Clear Varnish diluted with Epifanes Thinner (50%, 25%, 12%, 6%, 0%, and lastly 0% thinner) and finished with one coat of Epifanes Wood Finish Matte. I sanded with 320 grit paper between each coat. I found that 1 day between coats is sometimes not enough, as the surface was still a little tacky. The end result looks really good, however we will have to see how it holds up. I plan to sand and add 1 coat every year. I will try to remember to update my comment. ... show more

  • Very matte finish is very forgiving
Size: 500 ml
Disclaimer: I am not a woodworker or finisher. First I brushed on 2 coats of gloss on front cherry door. Looked very uneven with gloss and dull areas. Then made the mistake of applying this matte product right out of the can (without thinning). Nightmare brush strokes and drip marks and uneven areas where I tried in vain to correct. But somehow when this mess dried completely in around 4 hours, it looked much better. But still not good. Then I read about the product, which I should have done the first time, and saw recommendations for thinning. Second coat I thinned by 10-15% and went on much better but still difficult and not great. But somehow, when it all dried, it looked great. The super matte finish is extremely forgiving because it doesn't catch any reflections. Very happy now and will follow up with 0000 steel wool and paste wax for perfection. Unless someone comments here that this is a terrible thing to do. ... show more

  • Excellent results, but a bit tetchy to apply
I wouldn't say this product is thick, at all. In contrast to the clear gloss Epifanes spar, this has a more liquid consistency. But it is fairly unfriendly on the brush, since it has a tendency to drag like glue — more stringy than unctuous. The instructions warn not to overbrush. That's a bit of an understatement. You really need to get this stuff on fast and evenly. There is zero time to fuss. In this case, I was applying it as a topcoats over mutliple coats of the clear gloss spar. I applied the first coat in a garage at about 78 degrees and fairly high humidity without thinning. No fun. Though I've had a lot of professionsl varnishing experience, the initial result looked very patchy, though somewhat better once dried. For the second coat, I thinned slightly and brought the door into an air-conditoned space at about 70 degrees. That worked much better, though it was not a joy to work with. BUT the final result was really superb. I'll definitely use it again, but I'll be sure the conditions are right first. ... show more

  • My new favorite varnish!
Size: 1000 ml
I’m really impressed with this varnish. I did about 10 coats of the high-gloss and then finished with 2 to 3 of the matte. A good sanding and cleaning in between coats. With a very light sanding between the last two coats of matte. I will see the product is extremely viscous. With my first initial coats of both finishes I cut with mineral spirits about 50%. Then the next youth coach moved up to a 75% 25% mix. This allowed me to have a little more working time to smooth out each coat with a natural bristle brush. The reason for using glossy prior to matte from what I understand is that it actually finishes harder than the matte. I would absolutely use this again. Very happy with the product. I hope this was helpful. ... show more

  • Possibly the best outdoor poly if you want a matte finish
Size: 500 ml
It's important to note that this product is nothing like the popular "Clear Varnish" made by the same company. It is, though, a top quality, matte sheen, interior/exterior polyurethane. Yes, it is polyurethane, not phenolic like the Clear Varnish. I contacted Epifanes regarding the difference between this product and "Rubbed Effect" and was told the only difference is that this product contains UV blockers, while Rubbed Effect does not. Otherwise, application and sheen are the same. As for sheen, it is fairly flat, although not totally flat. Sheen is significantly less than Minwax Poly Satin, if you are familiar with that product. I gave it 4 stars because I think it is a good matte finish polyurethane capable of some outdoor exposure, although it is not going to hold up outdoors like the Clear Varnish. It levels well if brushed and can be thinned and wiped on. Although this is compatible with the Epifanes accelerator, you should know that the accelerator contains resin and therefore will change the sheen dramatically. ... show more
