  • Very fun to build, will give your hands a workout!
I'm not sure how accurate this engine kit is, but I had a lot of fun building it! The instructions were mostly easy to follow, with an exception here or there. The moving parts are really neat, with moving pistons inside of transparent heads, working timing chain and belts, etc. The motor works well, though it's a bit tough to turn on and off. It also puts out a lot of torque, which the engine can only somewhat handle. After a couple of minutes, something usually pops off the crankshaft and needs repaired. Also, I can't speak to how well the mobile app works, my phone (Google Pixel 6) doesn't seem to want to install it. The pieces themselves are generally well molded and seem to hold together nearly as well as the name brand blocks. Some of the construction techniques are tricky, but I was able to get everything together with some strength and patience. Speaking of strength, you'll find this kit (and generally kits of this type) can be tough on the hands, my fingertips were sore after a long building session, mostly due to how strong you sometimes need to grip very small parts. You'll definitely get a hand workout building this kit. The results for your effort look really cool though, it's a great display piece and recommended as a solid value for this kind of kit. ... show more

  • exhaust is backwards
This V8 engine model kit is really fun for kids to build. Makes realistic engine sounds! Easy to follow the instructions and, assemble the engine. Follow the instructions exactly because, a lot of the parts can be mixed up. I did notice that the exhaust pipe is backwards on the engine. Other than that, I have no issues with this product. The pieces are good quality and, don't break easily. ... show more

  • Fun build
Fun build...instructions are easy to follow and the pieces are high quality. Of course they're compatible with the big brands, so when you're done with your build if you don't wish to display it you can mix the parts and get very creative. Moving pieces are fun, and though it's not entirely scale accurate (timing chain on wrong side of engine), it's a good way to teach kids the basics of how an engine functions. ... show more

  • Super cool and a teaching tool
This is a super cool set and something I wish I had as a kid. The basic idea is like the big name in town, Lego, but this is beyond any set they ever had when I was younger (technic was just coming out or to my knowledge it was when I pretty much stopped using them. Even then the sets were pricier than we were able to get a lot of for the big ticket sets). This does have pieces that aren't just blocked into rigid shapes like those. All said, the concept is the same and it would matchup with some of the more advanced (without thousands of pieces) of Lego, and a fair number of the pieces look like they came out of one of those sets. The instructions have very little wording (and isn't a great translations so for the best) but is a nice sturdy and heavier weight paper, just high quality as far as instructions go. And are really clear about where the pieces go, so much that I wish ikea or similar furniture people would hire these people to do the guides as you know what needs to be done. The pieces are in bags not by piece type, but by segment/step. So you want to sort your bags, then each step of the booklet tells you how many of each type piece you need so you can prep. Assembly isn't bad, but I was doing it with a 10 or 11 yo (forget, related only through marriage and that fairly recent) and he needed help with a few things but mostly could do it himself. He is big into Lego though so he knows what he's doing and has a very analytical mind. I'd say teen is the right age to handle this, but early teens is the sweet spot where they are less likely to have an idea how engines work. Overall when done, you have a really cool functional engine. It can rotate either direction, complete with sounds and speed settings, even some lighting. I really recommend it, especially any kids into engineering/stem or an interest in cars ... show more

  • Fun & Challenging!
Perfect for adults or children, assembly is complex but not too complicated thanks to the clear and concise instructions. Our 11 year old who has an obsession with Legos has taken a new liking to Suplanet and the amazing functional and educational products that they offer. A+ Great value and tons of fun, great conversation piece too! ... show more

  • Yes, it's backwards.
Most folks don't have the training necessary to discern such things, but those of us well versed in automobile engines have by now probably noticed something is wrong with the image in the description: the exhaust system is pointing the wrong direction. It's even wrong in the instructions. If this engine were in a car, all of the timing gear would be at the back of the engine, which would be a maintenance nightmare. The big round thing on the engine would be the flywheel and torque converter, parts absolutely found at the back of the engine. Luckily, I'm happy to inform you that you can, by matter of fact, assemble this with the exhaust headers pointing in the correct orientation, so your gearhead friends won't make fun of you for having an engine model with a backwards exhaust. The parts fit together well but give yourself some time to put it together. You can probably do it in a few hours straight, but it took me a few days because I'd do a step then wander off and do something else, come back and do another step, etc. The important thing is take your time, and it all goes pretty smoothly. For the money, I think it's definitely worth it, this is a pretty nice engine kit. I'm kind of hoping now to find a car I can fit it in, lol. The only reason I took -1 star off is the fact they have the exhaust pointing in completely the wrong direction. It's fixable, though. 4 stars. ... show more
