  • Best purchase ever
Size: Compact-Twin (Mattress, Comforter & Pillow) Style: Traditional
I decided to get rid of my bed and to get a Japanese futon to sleep on. It took me a while before I finally decided to buy it. I wish I would have bought it sooner. I originally had a foam mattress from IKEA that lost its form over time and was no longer comfortable and was causing back pain. I wanted to buy a new bed but I wanted something cheaper and smaller than the queen size I had. This set ended up being a great buy for me. I put my futon on a hardwood floor. So it feels extra firm with some cushion. Firm beds are my personal preference. So this feels great on my back and I've been waking up early with more energy every day because I no longer have pain in my back. The pillow is very firm. The comforter is very fluffy, almost as much as the futon. If you want your bedding to be soft you will need to buy TWO FUTONS and use a regular pillow. One by itself on a hardwood floor will be very, very firm. It might be softer on carpeting but I only have hardwood floors and can't confirm that. I'm also six feet tall and it still feels comfortable. I'm considering buying the one that's 83 inches long, just for a little more foot space. Overall this was an amazing purchase. ... show more

  • It took some getting used to but sure enough it's the best sleep I've ever had
Size: Compact-Twin (Mattress, Comforter & Pillow) Style: Traditional
My bedroom space is very small as I share it with a room mate. I was having severe back pain on my American futon, I read that many people stopped their pains with a Japanese futon so I made the purchase. It took some getting used to but sure enough it's the best sleep I've ever had! The pillow is flatter than us Americans are used to however it gives the appropriate amount of support, just enough to keep your spine aligned properly. The mattress itself is similar, it's just enough cushion to give you support and be comfortable. I find it to be quite pleasant to lie down on. Finally the comforter is amazing, once it's on you absolutely no cold gets through to you. No exaggeration either, it's that good. I haven't woke up with a single ache or pain of any sort since I bought this, I will never go back to our overly soft, pricey beds! ... show more

  • Great for space
Size: Compact-Twin (Mattress, Comforter & Pillow) Style: Traditional
So to start, I do wish it was a bit cheaper, but overall it is nice. I do put a bed topper under it when I sleep which makes it nicer to sleep on at night. It saves a ton of room though. I move around a lot due to work and packing this is way easier then having to put up a bed frame or sleep on a blow up mattress. Also I think it’s way nicer to sleep on then a blow up. The blanket is very nice and keeps me very warm at nice. I am still looking though to put a cover on it though to make the texture better. The pillow I put next to the wall and use as a soft pad Incase I role over at night towards the wall. That way no one can hear a thump haha. It did take some time to get use to down sizing to a smaller bed, but overall I think it was a great investment. ... show more

  • Super comfortable!
Size: Compact-Twin (Mattress, Comforter & Pillow) Style: Traditional
I absolutely love this. I sleep on it every night, and while I do experience back pain, occasionally, for the most part, I feel great when I wake up. I have been using it for 2 months now, and it hasn't lost its cushion. The comforter is great. I have not used the pillow, so I can't tell you how that is. My cat enjoys sleeping on it, also. I am extremely happy with this purchase. I only wish it had been in a color. ... show more

  • the kakebuton (comforter) is very warm (I'm a very cold-natured person) and comfortable, not too heavy
Size: Compact-Twin (Mattress, Comforter & Pillow) Style: Traditional
This bedding set is very soft of texture, the kakebuton (comforter) is very warm (I'm a very cold-natured person) and comfortable, not too heavy. The pillow is not super plump, but its not flat as a pancake either. I am giving just 4 out of 5 stars due to the fact that the shikibuton (mattress part) is too thin for me personally. I used to love firm mattresses, but seem to need super soft squishy ones now. If firm is what you need, this set is perfect; you can even include a 3-4 inch foam mattress under it, if needed. If you need something very soft and squishy to protect hips and other joints, I would not recommend this set unless you put it on top of a very, very thick, squishy foam mattress. ... show more

  • Great for bad backs.
Size: Compact-Twin (Mattress, Comforter & Pillow) Style: Traditional
I suffer from moderate scoliosis and have moderate back pain most of the time. I've tried firm beds, I've tried memory foam, and I've tried the floor. The floor was the most comfortable (on carpet with a sheet laid on it) however it would press onto my skin after a night. I slept on the floor for about three months before purchasing this. Its just thick enough that it protects me from the floor and provides slight cushioning for my hips and shoulders when I sleep on my side. Its the best bed purchase one can make especially if you have a bad back and if you don't then this is a good preventive measure. You could use this combined with a memory foam topper underneath if one was interested in the Japanese look without the feeling, but at that point you might as well be sleeping on a regular bed. I would just encourage people to either use this alone or with the tatami mat they sell. There isn't a need for anything else. For reference too, I wrap the futon in a large sheet that is folded over it. Those futon covers are too expensive for what they are. ... show more

  • my comfortable new bed
Size: Compact-Twin (Mattress, Comforter & Pillow) Style: Traditional
I love my futon. It's very comfortable. It seems to trap heat within without overheating you into a sweat. I've used normal blankets and felt cold or heavy comforters and felt too warm but with my futon, it feels just right. It's winter here and quite cold outside but I don't feel it. The space I save from not having a bed and folding up my futon and tatami mattress and putting them away really makes my room easier to move in and clean. Edit: Cleaning the shikibuton (bottom) is a little tough. Since I was in a situation where I needed to clean it, I asked a question https://www.amazon.com/ask/questions/Tx2SJUN9QLBOILC/ref=ask_ql_ql_al_hza before I went and used the internet's collective know-how to the best of my ability. With luck, I was able to minimize the damage to a small corner and since then, I was using multiple sheets to keep it clean before I found a proper cover for it. As the seller said, you really shouldn't try to clean the shikibuton and I recommend saving up enough to buy a cover alongside the set. It's also important to keep in mind the tatami mattress flooring also helps keep your shikibuton (and cover) clean by guarding it from the floor (includes defending against any sharp objects that you may have missed while cleaning or overlooked; ie: thumbtacks, glass, staples, etc.). This is my first traditional Japanese futon. I only use my futon with a tatami mattress. Review after 17 days of use. Edit: 54 days now and I still agree with my sentiments above. Edit: It's Feb 2, 2022, 2 years after the original review and I still agree with my sentiments above. ... show more

  • Great Bed
Size: Compact-Twin (Mattress, Comforter & Pillow) Style: Traditional
Bought this after years of upper back/neck pain. Been using it for months and I'm getting deeper sleep on top of no pain. You'll want to use a tatami mat underneath and you'll also want to buy sheets made specifically for these types of beds, the comforter needs a sheet as well. I used these, and they're a bit pricey, but you can't use regular American style sheets, trust me I tried: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M4OJNQC ... show more
