April 2024: I bought the moon and star version of this Futon in August of 2022. My husband and I had two kids at the time and I was pregnant with my third. We had never owned a futon mattress before but every room in our house was occupied and my husband developed a nasty snore. I needed something that I could roll out on the living room floor to sleep at night and then roll back up out of the way. It is surprisingly comfortable for being much thinner than the kind of mattresses that I am used to. To be fair, I like extremely firm mattresses. Having a pad on a carpeted floor is exactly what my back needs. I sleep better on this pad than my actual bed. The rest of my family also heavily uses this pad. Sometimes I can sleep in my own bed if my husband is only quietly snoring. When that happens I still have to put out the futon at night because I will wake up to one or two children on it. My two year old needed to stop sleeping in his crib earlier than his siblings did and he often seems to prefer this mattress for sleeping at night. Sometimes even my husband sleeps on this thing and, while he does prefer our mattress, he seems to sleep well on it. It is pretty beaten up by now but keep in mind this thing has been HEAVILY used by 5 people, frequently left out during the day and played/jumped on. My husband has extremely sharp toenails and the material is wearing thin down at the bottom where his feet tend to rest. I have managed to patch that area up without much fuss. This thing has been bled on, peed on, puked on, etc. and it cleans up really well. We don't put it in a washing machine or anything like that. We do spot clean it and often hang it up to air out. There isn't anything that I haven't been able to get completely out of this pad. I don't know about any of the other color options but stains just don't seem to stick to the moon and star fabric. Also, it does not hold onto smells. I think it might have something to do with the fact that this can easily be hung over a railing for a few hours here and there. Two years later after taking a huge beating by a family of 5, this thing is still comfortable. It's maybe a little thinner than when we first bought it but any mattress would be after what we have put this poor thing through. Whenever we manage to destroy it, because that's going to happen with the kind of use it gets, I will 100% replace it with another of the exact same brand and pattern.

Though advertised as a Twin, the dimensions are actually those of a Twin XL (80” long, not 75”, x39”). Because it’s so thin compared to standard mattresses, it shouldn’t make a difference if you use regular twin fitted sheets — those will fit even two of these futons stacked together (which you might try if you find one is too thin for you). If you plan to put them on a bedframe rather than on the floor, you should be aware of the length. It’s not a big deal; those extra 5 inches are more critical with thicker & heavier mattresses that you really don’t want hanging over the frame edge unsupported. But (now that I am getting a thick orthopedic twin XL mattress for a different room, delivery of which has been delayed a few days) I’m glad these futons are 80” long, so I can use them on my new XL frame before the new mattress arrives! How fortuitous. I love them, especially the stars pattern cover (my house has a bedroom with a starry sky they go great with). They are super for doing physical therapy exercises, yoga, etc on the floor, easy & quick extra sleeping capacity for visitors who are open-minded & spry enough to use a floor futon (not inflated like camp mattresses, no pump needed, no danger of deflation from punctures); so easy & light to roll up & take with you on camping trips, etc. Also ideal if you live in a tiny studio, just roll them up & store out of the way in a cabinet or chest in daytime, the way many Japanese do.

When my mattress arrived, I immediately opened it and laid it flat in a sunny part of my room. I was really excited for the foam to expand so that I could test out. Buying a mattress that I hadn’t been able to test in advance made me a bit nervous and I was hoping that I hadn’t made a mistake. The instructions say to give the foam 48 hours to recover. The ends recovered within a couple of hours and I anxiously checked the middle a couple of times a day for 72 hours and the foam wasn’t recovering. I contacted the seller and later the manufacturer, sent pictures, and had a volley of messages about discounts and replacements. After over 120 hours of waiting for the foam to recover, I ended up contacting Amazon for assistance. Amazon sent a replacement mattress which recovered almost as soon as I opened the box. Although the two mattresses have the same design, the first was much more aesthetically pleasing. The fabric of the 2nd mattress clashes with the trim - both are very different shades of navy. On the 1st mattress this had been a perfect match. Also, the stitching that makes the box pattern in the mattress surface was a matching navy thread on the 1st mattress, but it is a contrasting white thread on the 2nd mattress. The trim on the edge was also starting to unravel when I opened the 2nd mattress. I know this seems nitpicky, but it means that every loose end of thread is visible and they are numerous so it looks a lot lower in quality. Overall, the 1st mattress seemed to have sturdier manufacturing, but was absolutely non-function. I’m not sure how long the 2nd will stay intact, but at least it is usable and a lot more comfortable than sleeping on the floor!
