I bought these for my son who is a mechanic. He had complained about inhaling metal/rust particles while working on a car. When they arrived, the chemical smell was a problem. We soaked them in a 1:1 solution of vinegar/water overnight. Then we rinsed them out and washed them with a small dollop of dish detergent until clean and put them in a lingerie bag and dried them on low in the dryer. Odor was gone and they fit beautifully. His only complaint is that he looks like he has a nose ring when he wears them. Not sure if they will fully perform the task requested, but they should provide some barrier.
