  • Why did I wait
After waiting for a very long time to get one of these, I must be honest with you. At first I purchased a much smaller version and hand cranked version. Long story short returned it and purchased the electric version and I absolutely love it. Easy to use, set up and work on something else.

  • Low power, but effective.
It works great and is amazing for keeping from wearing out your arm. However even the smallest snag will stop it and the tension device doesn't work as well as I had hoped.

  • Unreliable
The yarn kept wrapping around the base. I worked with it for a couple of days and it constantly jammed up. I would not recommend this product

  • I'm picky, and this gets five stars
I think this yarn winder has the capacity to be a real game changer. For one reason, it's fast. Was able to wind 300 yards from three different skeins in about 20 minutes. Admittedly the learning curve is a little steep - I feel like this could have made a real mess if I'd used a swift as I'm accustomed. But with an electric yarn winder, it's probably better to use your hands to hold the yarn into something like an oblong or a rectangle, similar to what you see in old time cartoons of kids holding yarn for granny. The issue with yarn winding is tension - you can easily pull the ball too tightly and stretch out the yarn if you don't know what you're doing. Even so, I pretty much don't ever use a winder to pull yarn off a swift, because those are so heavy they'll definitely stretch yarn even if they spin pretty freely. I will usually pull off two or three yards off the swift onto the floor and wind from that. If I *do* on a rare occasion wind directly from the swift, I pull off the ball and re-wind it from the center to relax it. Pulling yarn off two yards at a time, then turning the crank on a manual winder can take a while since it's a two handed process for both of these steps. But, holding the yarn as I describe above means there's nothing for the winder to have to pull, and since it's electric all you have to do is stand there with your hands out holding the yarn. I'll dip a hand toward each end as the yarn is coming off it but don't really have to do much more than that. This winder has an adjustable tension wheel which seems to have a lot of 'give' to it but not so much that it makes a messy cake. I was very happy with the finished cakes. Best of all it doesn't take much to stop the winder. If you run into a knot and it has to pull more than a little bit it'll beep loudly, then stop. This gives you a chance to undo the knot, then start over, and it doesn't keep pulling the knot through the tension guard. My ONE criticism is that this has a pretty short cord. I tried to use it on my kitchen counter and had to plug it into an extension cord. This model is advertised for winding large balls of yarn and I'd buy that, even though it also did fine on sock weight small skeins of yarn I had lying around. The only challenge is adjusting the speed if you've got yarn wound around your hands, although I was able to get the hang of that pretty quickly. I turned up the speed to probably 8 out of 10 on the dial (just an estimate since no numbers are marked) and it did a great job of winding pretty quickly without pulling too hard, pulling the yarn off my hands or tangling the yarn. I knit, crochet and weave, and I'm planning to use the ever loving daylights out of this. I'd order another one like a shot. Buy this. That said I'll update the review after I've tried a few different yarn weights with it. I think it might have trouble with that velour blanket yarn everyone sells these days, but probably any weight up to chunky would be fine. ... show more

  • Great Gadget!
I'd been eyeing a yarn winder for a while, and after a particularly thorny battle with a skein that ended disastrously, investment seemed a good idea. I'm the kind of knitter/crocheter who usually just uses yarn from the middle of the skein, and have only occasionally ventured into higher end brands of yarn, but those skeins I have bought that need winding are some I take extra care with. All this to say, it takes me a while to wind a skein into a ball, and a lot of care. Moving to this winder was a wonder, but I was nervous about stretching or catching the yarn, and it ended up going quite slowly to fully cake the skein. (Almost an hour for a standard-size skein of sock yarn. Admittedly, worsted, or another thicker yarn, might have gone faster and more easily.) Now, setting up the winder was easy. It comes disassembled, but with a fairly clear instruction booklet with both written instructions and pictures. Setup is quick, though once you've assembled the winder, returning it to the original box isn't really an easy option unless you thoroughly disassemble it again. The instruction booklet is very clear about how to attach your yarn to wind it, and it works perfectly. You don't need to worry about the yarn going wrong on the winder, as it just doesn't, you just have to worry about keeping your yarn going with the speed of the winder. It does have an alarm if the tension gets too tight, though pausing the dial or slowing it to deal with minor issues is simple. Even going fairly quickly, my first use did require intense attention for an hour or so to get everything caked up properly, but the yarn looks good and is easy to knit or crochet with now, so I'm pleased. (I was quite pleased with no easy it was to just slip the finished cake off the winder as well.) This isn't going to solve all your problems, and it's not a start it and forget it device, but this can help you wind your yarn in an attractive and safe manner and make projects actually easier to accomplish. This winder is easy to use, pretty solid -- especially in the hardware to attach the device to a table! -- and definitely accomplishes all its meant to with ease. A great investment, especially if you find yourself spending a lot of time balling your skeins before you can embark on a project! ... show more

  • Nice, has some issues
Electric yarn winder. Nice. Good capacity, allows you to wind a big ball of yarn at one time. Easy set up. If the yarn starts to kink, it will stop and beep, which is nice. Cons, feels like cheap plastic, the tensioner is cheap, and does not hold the yarn well. I still have to guide the yarn through the tension slot. The spring on the tensioner rattles loudly and looks like it will fall off . ... show more

  • Love this thing!
As other reviewers have said, this is a huge time saver and works well. Even my seven-year-old was able to put yarn in it and start it. The power knob turns to dial up the speed of winding. It was fun to watch some simple cotton yarns spin at max speed. Assembly was incredibly quick and easy. At first I was distressed not to see any paper instructions in the box or written on it, then I realized that the 3 big pieces easily fit together as pictured. There was one small crew to insert using the included mini screwdriver. All told, less than 5 minutes to set up, including plugging it in. ... show more

  • Faster yarn cakes
This electric yarn winder is great, now I can make faster yarn cakes. This was easy to set up and it was easy to use. I have a manual one that is also easy to use, but this one holds more yarn, and it makes the process go a lot faster.
