  • A joy to listen to - Much better than what I had expected with great sound qualIty and finish.
Color: black
*Update* just to reiterate, these continue to be such a joy to listen to, surprising me with the melodious sound… was just listening to Clarinet Blues by Bobby Gordon and Dave McKenna and it just sounded so beautiful. I don’t know what Edifier did but this cheap little speaker continues to impress, making listening to music a joy. ——— I wanted a inexpensive pair of speakers for the study. I have sound assistants (echo, nest) but the sound is tinny and lacks bass. I thought about adding an amp plus small bookshelves but it would have been a bit much in that small room. After some research, I thought I would try the Edifiers (Amazon had good ratings as did CR for a different model). I have to say I was blown away by the sound. I just had not expected them to sound so good. I have a full system in the basement for music with a Yamaha amp, Elac speakers and a subwoofer - and these of course do not match that system which costs more than 10 times the price of this system. Yet, these inexpensive little speakers sound very, very good - better than most of my hifi gear when I was growing up. The drums and guitar of ZZTop is clear and beautifully musical. Crystal Gayle or Jones vocals sound beautiful as does Camilla Cabello. Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here is perfect. as is a lot of classical and jazz. There are of course some songs that are not suited for these speakers - think the deep bass in Hans Zimmer’s Why So Serious - but these are typically songs where you need a sub anyhow. Just to note - I usually listen to these at moderate volume - 65 to 70db - so I cannot comment on high volume usage. The fit and finish is rather good (I got the black to match piano on which these are sitting). I wish they had Spotify connect.but the Bluetooth does work quite well, and a more visible LED light which would blink when you pressed the remote button to see if it is receiving a command. Finally - Edifier’s naming of their speakers is horrendous when trying to figure out what do buy. I wish they would have a simpler approach to naming, and to understand the differences between the speakers. Overall Summary - excellent audio performance, value for money and good fit and finish. Good for most music except songs with the deepest bass. ... show more

  • Really Nice Sounding Speakers at a Fantastic Value
Color: black
I have been riding a pair of KLH 970s into the ground for about 20 years. They were my desktop/office speakers for a bunch of years, though they always played second fiddle to some big floor-standers when I was doing focused listening. Still, they took a beating and kept kicking. That said, I finally decided to get a new set for my music room, since my floor standing speakers are upstairs in the living room. I'm really pleased with these Edifiers after a solid 3-4 weeks of listening. They put out more/punchier bass than the old KLH speakers I had, and they are more even across the frequency spectrum. Sure, they drop off significantly around ~60Hz and are not thumping. To be fair though, these aren't speakers you slam anyway - they're sized and powered for their intended application. While I felt they were a big upgrade in what I had before, I added an 8" powered sub to the setup. This was two-fold: to extend the overall bass response of my setup AND to take some of the stress off of the 4" cones in the Edifiers. When you plug a sub (or anything) into the "Sub Out" on the R1280DBs, the Edifiers automatically implement a fixed HPF to pass off the low/sub duties to the subwoofer. I contacted Edifier since there are no stated specs on where that HPF/crossover is in the manual, and they said the speaker roll off starting at 120 Hz. I later found some spectrum graphs that show a slight dip from 120-100, and then a significant roll-off under 100 Hz. So setting my sub's LPF around 90-100 Hz is producing pretty smooth/seamless coverage across the sound system. Regarding the sub and how necessary it is to have one, that will really depend on your use and having realistic expectations. If I were using these in a garage or workshop environment, I likely would have rolled with the Edifiers on their own. Given that they're in a music room where I spend a lot of time listening and working, I opted to supplement with a sub. For reference, I'm not a dude who wants windows to rattle and furniture to vibrate. I play, record, and listen to a wide range of music. So I just wanted a bit more presence out of basslines and kick drums when listening. I keep the sub volume down a bit, and it's very complimentary to what the Edifiers do. You'll also get a bit more headroom/volume out of them when they aren't trying to reproduce low bass freqs. Overall, these speakers sound fairly even and flattering to the variety of music I've listened to on them. There's a touch of warmth, but they feel accurate without being sterile or tinny in the treble. For $150 bucks, I'd buy them again... ... show more
