Features

  • [Ideal for Above Ground Pools] Max output 15826 BTU/hr, the Pool heat pump PLC50 is Ideal for Above Ground Pools with up to 4000 gallons of water. (Please refer to the temperature map of the United States to chose the appropriate model).
  • [Extend Your Swim Season]: Designed specifically for heating aboveground swimming pools . The PLC50 heater can operate within the range of ambient temperature from 40F to 100F, under optimal operating conditions can heat the water temperature to 105F, making it an ideal choice for extending the swimming season for months.
  • [Save Money]: Base on heat pump technology, the PLC50 heat pump absorbs energy from the air and transfers it into the water. So the operation only requires very limited electric input, hence its high efficiency and heat conversion rate can reach a score of COP 5.6. In other words, for every cent of electricity spent, 5.6 times heat is generated!
  • [Easy Operation] The intelligent control IC automatically maintains the swimming pool at your desired temperature. Once it starts running, you don't need to adjust any settings, just enjoy a warm and comfortable swimming pool.
  • [Built in flow sensor] The machine is equipped with a water flow sensor, which can automatically control the working time of the heater through the timing setting of the water pump.

  • powerful and efficient, good value
I ordered this for my 14' swim spa, which I intend to keep around 96F year round in the Midwest. The device took some work to unpack, but installation was pretty straightforward. My only complaint was that the electrical hookup didn't have a hole for a round liquid-tight flex conduit fitting, so I had to snug the electrical line itself down as best I could to the device's electrical panel. I've run the heater for several weeks now, including in 20-30F outdoor temperatures while heating the swim spa to 96F. The coils start to freeze when the ambient temperature is near or below zero, but this is no problem as the heat pump periodically reverses and defrosts the coils in about 30 seconds, then continues heating the pool. The heat pump seems to heat the pool as per its nameplate power rating. I was a bit confused about the power rating at first, as the nameplate says the max power is at 90Hz, not 60Hz, which made no sense given that line frequency is always 60Hz. It turns out this is because the compressor runs at variable speeds due to the inverter tech, which converts to DC and then back to AC with variable frequency. This is a big plus in my view -- I noticed when the inlet temperature is very much below the set point, it consumes about 2kW running at max power to heat up quickly, but for regular cycles around the set point, it consumes only about 1100W. This speed variability presumably improves the efficiency, and the energy meter I put on the line shows the electrical consumption has gone down substantially, probably around 1/3 of what it was for resistive heating. This roughly matches the claimed coefficient of performance. Once I got it running, I was trying to get the temperature swing under 0.5F (see the temperature plot), but I was getting swings around 2F. I emailed the tech support, which responded the next day with detailed answers to my questions. It turns out the unit has a lot of internal settings which can be accessed through the control panel. These are described in the user manual but weren't always clear. I was able to lower the swing setting and get to about 1.5F swing. Still not perfect, but definitely good enough. I understand the device shuts off when the ambient drops below 20F. I expect it will automatically come back on again as the temperature rises, but I'll edit the review if it has to be manually reset. EDIT: A few nights ago I left it running when the ambient temperature plunged to zero degrees F. It kept running and continued raising the pool temperature around 8F ambient temperature but could only hold the pool temperature steady around 97F water temperature at 0F ambient temperature. I was worried that the low ambient temperature might slug the compressor, so I emailed tech support. They emailed back within a few hours to say that you can run the unit all the way down to -18F (!) ambient temperature, and below that it will shut itself off with an error code (E23) to protect the compressor. They only recommend running it down to +20F ambient temperature, as the efficiency drops below that, but you can safely leave it running. This is great for a year-round hot tub. Bottom line: It works well as advertised, even when it is down to 20F outside. I would definitely buy again. ... show more
