  • Tricky installation, but great performance
Size: Rear Style: 1500w / 52v 16ah Shark
Retrofitted a hybrid bike with this kit (supplied own 48V battery). Performance is pretty terrific! On low/medium/high power modes, speeds were measured at 18/24/28mph. Will be using this mainly on medium mode, since stopping distance is quite long, and the extra speed just burns down the battery charge without saving much time. Definitely upgrades a bike into a short-range (4 to 10 mile one-way) personal commute vehicle. Some points of difficulty: the wheel hub is very "fat", so we had to dremel down part of the front fork to make it fit. I believe other reviewers have encountered the same issue. Installation instructions could be a lot better; we were scratching our heads about what part was what, but thankfully, the cables are somewhat color-coded. We skipped installation of the special brake levers (bike had the integrated Shimano brake+shifter levers) and also the pedal assist sensor. Had to cut off and re-solder the battery connector, since ours was a different shape. Overall: 2 months in, a few hundred miles travelled on electricity, and doing well. Edit: Front wheel "burned out"/stopped working about two years in and many thousands of miles later. It looks like one can order just the front wheel from Ebikeling's website, and not have to purchase the entire kit again, so, I'd say, still a pretty terrific product. ... show more

  • Exellent Kit For Hobbiest Wanting To Covert A Bike To E-bike
Size: Rear Style: 1500w / 52v 16ah Shark
I didn't get paid or offered any thing free for this review. I would rate difficulty 3 on a scale of 1 to 5. I would have given the kit 5 stars but the control display for the handle bars did not work for pedal assist. I belive it was not broken or malfunctioning, but was only set for throttle at the factory. There were no instructions for changing the factory defalts with the kit or online that I could find. I worked with ebikelings customer service to solve the problem. I recommed calling them by phone and not using their message system to contact if you have a problem. I tried the message system first and I don't think the person who responded read my whole message so the response was not satisfactory. Communications by phone was much better. I was very impressed with the construction of this kit the Jewel connectors made it a snap to connect the parts. Installation will depend a lot on the bicycle you intend to convert and your do it yourself skills. Expect to possibly purchase some additional parts, tools, materials, and hardware to make the kit work with your bike. You could get lucky and everything will fit and work the first time. At the very least you will need to find and solder a connector from the harness to the battery. My kit to battery took an XT60 connector, purchased it from an RC car hobby shop. They bike I was converting was a Schwinn and so I did need a larger pedal assist sensor made by Ebikeling. I needed some spacers and washers to make the PAS sensor work with my bike's crank. I had to fabricate a mount for my battery to my luggage rack. I used many zip strips to secure cables that I purchase from Harbor Freight. I found a nice small metalic looking spray bottle at the dollar store. I drilled a hole in the bottom I had a half inch grommit that I purchased at an auto parts store, and cut off the spray trigger, leaving the screw on cap. I passed the cables through the bottle and wound the excess up and fed it into the bottle to clean up the excess without needing to cut and solder the wiring. I secured the bottle to the frame with some zip strips. It looks very nice. I mentioned the control problem earlyer (PAS) would not work, I ended up purchasing the water proof SW900 control display. This was much nicer, came with set up instructions, and I found some helpful Youtube videos for setting it up. I left the factory defaults alone except where they needed to be changed like for battery voltage, throttle and pedal assist, wheel size, and number magnets in the PAS sensor disc. All in all I spent an addititional 100 dollars on the PAS kit, Controller, and other hardware. I recommed ebikeling kit if you think you are up to it. I saved about 600 dollars by doing the coverson vs. purchasing a new e-bike. ... show more

  • What a rush! But...
Size: Rear Style: 750w / 36v 12.8ah Bottle
Updated 9/26/19 While I have not yet seen resolution to the overly-aggressive PAS level 1, I've now put more than 60 miles on the bike, and I don't think it's fair to penalize the product that much. I've adjusted it to 5-star. That said, I did find a couple additional items worth mentioning: 1) There appears to be some kind of cruise-control that is accessible with the LCD display. Press and hold the PAS down button for a few seconds. If the bike is stationary, BEWARE that it will start moving (up to 6MPH). If you're using the trottle at a given speed and hold it, it will lock in on that speed. While you can still use the throttle and PAS to add power to the current set cruise level, you cannot set the cruise control WHILE pedaling. I wish there was some kind of documentation to this feature. 2) Pressing and holding the up button will toggle the headlight icon on the LCD. However, it does not toggle the 52V output wires (connection #8 in the manual). I've asked the seller for clarification on this. Currently I cannot get my LED headlight to turn off unless I disconnect the main battery from the controller. Far from practical. Still, better that having to use a headlight with a separate battery. - Building this bike was the first time I've ever worked with, or ridden an electric bike - so take that into consideration when you read the remainder of my review. I started off with a Mongoose Malus. I went for the rear wheel, with thumb throttle and LCD. Installation was actually quite straight forward, and took less than an hour to get installed and tested. Maybe another hour to polish up the install by carefully placing wires and controller. There are two issues that I noticed right away. The stainless hose clamp that is provided was too large to use on the Malus to tie the torque arm to the chain stay. The slotted portion of the band only covers about half the length of the band - thus tightening it all the way down to its limit didn't cinch down on the bike frame. No big deal, as hose clamps are cheap and easy to come by. Nevertheless, it's a bit of an annoyance to have to make a run to the hardware store. The second issue is a bit more troubling. Pedal assist is dangerously fast with way too much torque on even the lowest setting. By default, the display/controller is set to 5 levels of pedal assist (PAS). 0 is no assist. 1 through 5 should provide increasing assistance. However, when set to 1, even a slight rotation of the crank will cause the thing to apply the full 1200 watts of power to get the bike to about 12 MPH. Level 2 is about 15MPH, level 3 is about 18, and so on. The problem is that there is no ramping up of assistance. It's essentially instant full-throttle until it gets to the given speed for the PAS level. Likewise, when you stop cranking, the assistance drops off completely and instantly to 000 watts. This abrupt drop in assistance is so dramatic, it feels as though the brakes are applied. That's OK if you have both hands on the bars, but if you're driving one-handed (i.e. sipping water), and you stop pedaling momentarily, it can get dangerously squirrely very quickly. I reached out to ebikeling about this, and they acknowledged that there is a known problem with the controller/display and how abrupt the power on/off function is with PAS. They are trying to nail down the gremlin, and said there will be a fix that will likely require either (or both) the controller or display to be exchanged. They had no time frame for the fix. On a side note, I did see references from others that said using a 52V battery with the LCD will result in inaccurate power metering. That may have been the case in the past, but with the latest version, there is an option to set the battery to several different voltages - including 52V. So I'm assuming that issue has been addressed. Overall, despite the whiplash-inducing PAS, riding my Malus is so simple, it really feels like cheating. I'm able to get this heavy, fat-tired bike up to 28 MPH on the flat gravel road stretches, and it pulls me up steep gravel roads (which I'd previously had to walk my bikes) with no problem. This morning I 'rode' my bike 10 miles (RT) to a neighbor's house over extreme hills on gravel roads. I didn't even take a water bottle. My wife doesn't like to ride bikes on gravel (who does?). She REALLY doesn't like to climb hills on a bike. With the fat tires, we can ride the gravel with ease. With the motor, the hills evaporate. What a great product. I hope to change my rating to 5 stars soon - and will do so immediately once the PAS issues are resolved. ... show more
