While this mosquito attractant device didn’t entirely eliminate our mosquito problem, it helps make time spent outside much more tolerable. Using this with mosquito attractant packets has allowed us to spend more time outside, especially at dusk when the biting pests are at their worst. Catches mosquitoes with the proper attractant. I have had this out since spring and changed the bait every month and it has made a noticeable impact on the mosquito population. Even my neighbors have pointed out how much nicer its been outside this summer. Does not eliminate all of them but now i only see a handful of them instead of literal swarms. One downside is the trap door on the bottom tends to get stuck and it can be difficult to empty it out if you have a lot of bugs in it. I also feel bad because it caught a ton of moths and I don’t really want to harm them. I wish there was a way to avoid that collateral damage. ... show more

I really wanted to love this thing. I have almost an acre, and the mosquitoes here have apparently formed a homeowners association. I followed the instructions. I put it 30 feet away. Nothing. Moved it closer. Nothing. Moved it higher. Lower. Even lower. Still nothing. I waited the full 6 WEEKS like the instructions told me to, patiently believing that one day this magical mosquito vacuum would finally declare war on the bugs. Nope. The mosquitoes are still thriving. They fly around me like they pay the mortgage. And before anyone asks, yes, it catches some bugs. A few moths have sacrificed themselves for the cause. But considering this thing is advertised for up to an acre, I expected to see at least SOME noticeable difference. Instead, I have a $100+ outdoor bug museum containing a modest collection of dead moths while the mosquitoes continue their all-you-can-eat buffet on my family. The absolute worst part? By the time I followed the instructions and waited the 6 weeks, I was past the return window. So now I own a very expensive decorative bug basket. Maybe this works wonderfully somewhere else. Maybe my Florida mosquitoes are simply more highly trained. But after six weeks, multiple locations, multiple heights, and following the instructions, I cannot honestly say this has made any noticeable difference whatsoever. Would not purchase again. I was more than a little skeptical when I first heard about the DynaTrap on a radio Garden show that claimed it can cover 1/2 to 1 acre of property, but I have trusted the shows host on a number of things so I ordered it through Amazon. It took several weeks to arrive, as they were backlogged with orders as I am sure they are each Spring to Summer. The trap feels very light so you won't have to worry about a heavy or large hook to hang it. I installed it on the far edge of the patio but still under cover. I did not want the rain to soak it or the sun's UV rays to degrade it. I am a little concerned about the operating life, being left on 24/7. So far so good. I have had it operating for a month now and I am really pleased that it is so quiet. How it works: The light stay on continually and attracts flying insects day and night! When the insects get close, the fan underneath the light pulls them through the grate and traps them in the basket below. I have seen all different sizes of insects in the trap. Problems: I have only had one problem with the trap. I came out one day last week and the light was on but the fan was not turning. I unplugged the cord and found that a rather large June Bug was caught between the fan and the grate below it. These tough little bugs seem like they are made of a hard plastic and and this one was too big to make it trough the grate and was wedged in there, stopping the fan blade. I was think that perhaps this could have burned up the electric fan motor but after removing the bug and plugging it back in, it worked just fine. Apparently they anticipated this happening in the motor design. Nice job Dyna Trap! Operation: I empty the trap about twice a week and estimate that there is about one full cup of bugs inside. Some of the bugs that were apparently caught recently were still alive in the basket so I keep a can of bug killer close by and spray the bugs after I dump them out. (No since letting them take off and bother us again.) I probably should empty it more often because you can detect a slight odor from the dead bugs if you leave them in there too long. (Just a suggestion) Although I did not notice the smell from the patio because the fan blowing over them disperses the smell. Just the same, you may want to empty it more often. I am please with the quiet operation and clearly effective way it works, and have noticed a REAL difference sitting outside!. My backyard is about 1/2 acre and I still occasionally notice a fly by, but I'm not bothered like before. Even when I go out at night with a flashlight, I am not attacked by swarms of bugs. This is the first bug collector that has actually worked. I will have to collect bugs out of it every few weeks, but it's the first one that's been effective enough to collect them. There's a trap door so if the power goes out the bugs don't just escape. We did have a large beetle that managed to stop the fan from rotating, so it may not be bad to have in a place that it can be monitored. Definitely collects mosquitos over night. But does little to reduce population. We use these along with Mosquito Barrier Garlic oil in a pump sprayer. Its Bee & bird safe insect deterrent.

I bought the 1/2 acre trap last year - wow, did it fill up quick! I noticed a significant difference when I unplugged it. Why did I unplug it? I went to empty it and found a HUGE spider in it, apparently eating the dead bugs. In a perfect world, this larger model will also trap spiders.
