Some reviewers had issues with kayaks falling off or screws coming loose. We bought this for a trip to Lake Tahoe from Idaho. After reading those reviews I took a few extra precautions. 1: I used lock washers. 2: I used a strap that goes over the top of the boats and wraps around the interior of the car. (Open the back doors) It makes a loop around the boats and the roof of the car. 3: We used straps on the fore and aft end of the kayaks. I checked the knobs and screws at all our stops. The Big knobs vibrated loose a little but nothing to lose a kayak over. While in Tahoe we drove without the front/rear tiedowns at 50-60 MPH with no issues. The one HUGE problem I have with this rack system is the 2 supplied tiedowns that go around each individual kayak. I had to climb on top of our CRV to get them through the small groove in the rack. My other option was to use the 7 1/2' PVC pole with a bolt through it to put the straps through. (I made it to fetch things out of my 8' bed on my truck) There is just no easy way to attach these integral straps. 4 outta 5 stars ... show more

    • It works but makes a terrible whistling noise

I chose this product because it folded flat and I could keep it on my car all season. However the wind created an extremely loud ear-piercing whistling noise anytime we drove over 45mph. My cross rails always make a little whistle that is easy to tune out, but this was so loud it actually hurt our ears. Due to this I am returning it, but the rack did work as described. My family just cannot take the constant noise on a long road trip. The installation process wasn't too bad. I would recommend removing your cross rails first (if possible) and attaching these to them while off your car. Then add the whole thing back on at one time. It was a little difficult to reach under there and tighten the screws while the rails were on the car. Once on they seemed pretty stable. ... show more

Getting these screwed in all the way was a challenge. There's 16 bolts and nuts in total and each took me about 4-5 minutes to tighten all the way. I could only manage to turn the nuts 1/8 a turn at a time because of the tight fit. I have 100% confidence these are not going to move once installed and driving on the highway at 65 mph I noticed virtually no noise or movement with a 75 lb kayak sitting on top. I'm pretty happy with these as the stability is excellent, but I don't look forward to having to take them off and put them back on. Might just buy another set of crossbars as that would be way easier. ... show more

I love the fact that these fold down. Creating less air resistance when not carrying the kayaks. They were also very easy to install. I would have given them 5 stars but they are too new to see how they hold up over time! So far they are great!

    • Poor instructions for installation

The instructions for the installation and different positions for use are non existent or minimal. Also, including nuts for the mounting bolts would greatly help as tightening the nylon lock nuts causes the bolts to pop up unless they are held down firmly. Very annoying when you have 16 bolts to secure not to mention removing and remounting the mounts. Other than that the mounts work ... show more
