Update 8/20/25 As a recap: 1) I live in an old home with old, outdated electrical wiring. 2) I live in the southeastern region of the US where temps are typically above 80 degrees Fahrenheit between May and October. The latest heatwave just ended a day ago. My biggest concern was the A/C drawing too much power to keep up with the sweltering temperatures. The Drea unit did very well. I did trip the breaker that it's plugged into twice. Not totally unexpected. It happened once Sunday and once Monday. The compressor never turned off. The unit was able to continuously cool. My only issue is that the screen in front of the A/C that shows the status (mode, temp, etc.) hasn't stayed lit since the first time the unit shut off. This hasn't impacted performance. If I change anything, for example the temperature, the little screen will light up briefly. And then turn off again. There were no instructions or troubleshooting techniques that addressed this in the manual. I honestly don't care. But I just wanted to be transparent and share that one little thing. Again, this hasn't impacted the unit's performance at all. I'm sure there's a way to fix it. The Drea brand A/C continues to be a great investment. ####End up 8/20/25 update#### I received this air conditioner yesterday, August 8, 2025. And set it up this morning. I will update this review after a few months to chronicle my experience. I live in the southeast of the United States where we experience hot temperatures from about May to October. So, I expect to use the A/C for two more months. The Dreo air conditioner is such a vast improvement from my old portable unit. In May 2021, I purchased a Luko 3 in 1 9000 BTU unit from Amazon. Our central air stopped working. The temps were rising. And we needed something to keep cool. I had little knowledge of portable air conditioner units. So I went with one that I assumed would be a good brand at an affordable price. I was wrong. The Luko was a terrible purchase that was too expensive at $319 for the quality and performance. The hose was cheap. It only offered one window extension piece that was too long for our windows. I could only use the main piece and added cardboard to cover up the the window screen. The unit would easily overheat, causing the compressor to shut off and switch to fan only. As a matter of fact, the unit itself would create heat, making it hard to reap the benefits of the cooling function. But, it was better than nothing. A week and a half ago, the Luko unit stopped working. In the middle of a heat wave. But I was determined not to make the same mistake again. So I took my time and researched portable air conditioners. Dreo ended up as a brand on my short list. It was between that one and the Whynter unit voted best portable A/C by Good Housekeeping. I went with the Dreo. So far, I think I made a great choice. Set up was relatively easy. The only thing complicating the process was the window that I am using. We live in an old home with original windows. Despite that, I was able to set up the window kit using one of the extensions provided. The instructions were very simple to follow. The hose is high quality and connected very easily. I didn't have to use duct tape to keep anything in place like I did with the Luko. The unit is set to cool when you turn it on. And oh boy! It feels GOOD!!!! I have it on 65 degrees because I need it to cool the front part of the house from a back bedroom. The unit has been running for a few hours, and I already feel a significant difference in the temperature. I've been surviving with 3 fans (and a swamp cooler when necessary). I only have one fan going right now. I'll see how things hold up when it warms up later in the day. It's 11:41 AM now. The unit is so quiet compared to my old Luko. I keep getting up to check it to see if it has tripped the surge protector, lol. Because I can't hear it in the room where I'm watching TV. The Luko A/C was loud and used a lot of energy. And it would shut off quite often. I do not anticipate that being a problem with the Dreo based on other reviews. But, I'll definitely update here if this becomes a recurring problem. I don't know if I'll use the dehumidifier mode. I'll be sure to share my feedback if I do. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. I got one of the brands I wanted at my desired price point, which was $400 max. The unit was $390 with the 15% off coupon. Activating the warranty only took a few minutes. You have to create an account and provide basic info like the model number and order number. Consider this brand and model if you're looking for a good portable air conditioner. As someone who got a really terrible unit before, this A/C is a vast improvement.

I AM RESERVING JUDGEMENT “.” Because I have a terrible history with portable ACs. But this was a desperate purchase and for the one hour I’ve had it, it’s been a dream 🥶 In the past I was lucky if a pac let out any air, let alone cold air. But this one seems great. It comes with batteries for the remote, tubing for the exhaust, window rigging, and a helpful guide that shows the ins and outs of the machine — with a handy QR code to connect this thing to your phone (haven’t had the time to do that yet.) It has a bajillion settings, my favorite being the cool setting at 64 degrees and the fan which oddly seems to blow out even colder faster air. A humid setting is also offered for dry climates and they have a clear warning that dry climates will cause this Dreo to leak, so do intermittent draining from the back. The exhaust tubing gets kinda hot, I guess from the air it’s pulling or outputting or dehumidifying? I don’t know. Just be forewarned if tiny hands decide to check and see what that cool tube does. I’m a bit bothered by this gurgling noise that comes and goes but guide says that’s normal. It’s like a fridge, fridges makes noises. It’s doing its job! The general noise level isn’t soundless but it’s loads better than my very expensive jetengine of an central hvac that charges me $200 for exactly no July heat relief. I have a new puppy so I placed this on a high table and blocked the wire plug from his tiny teething mouth. But it has little wheels that can move this around on the ground so you can clean if there’s leakage. I give this two thumbs up.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great portable AC that actually cools! I bought the Dreo 516S 14,000 BTU portable AC and I’m really happy with it. It has made a huge difference on hot days and cools my room much faster than I expected. The cooling power is impressive, and it does a great job maintaining a comfortable temperature. The setup was easy, the controls are simple, and I love being able to adjust settings from my phone. It runs quieter than other portable AC units I’ve tried, and the design looks modern and doesn’t take up too much space. I especially like that it has enough power to handle a larger room and doesn’t struggle when temperatures get high. It has been reliable, convenient, and worth the money. Highly recommend the Dreo 516S for anyone needing a strong portable air conditioner!

This DREO portable air conditioner suffered what appears to have been a major and potentially dangerous internal failure after only five months of ownership and very light seasonal use. Last night, as my partner and I were about to fall asleep, our bedroom was suddenly overwhelmed by an extremely strong, repulsive odor resembling skunk spray mixed with burning machinery oil and chemicals. At first we believed there was a skunk outside, so unfortunately we remained in the room breathing the fumes for more than 30 minutes. My partner eventually went outside to investigate and discovered there was no skunk odor whatsoever outdoors. The smell was coming from inside our bedroom, and the obvious source was the DREO air conditioner. By that point, we had started feeling very dizzy, and the chemical/burnt-oil odor was so intense that it was invading our nostrils and appeared to have deposited a faint oily residue throughout the immediate area, including on bedding and surfaces. I immediately unplugged the unit, opened the windows, and set up multiple fans pushing contaminated air out of the bedroom and bringing fresh air inside. It took approximately four hours of continuous ventilation before the odor even began to dissipate. We barely slept because the bedroom remained filled with the smell while temperatures became unbearable without the AC. This is not an acceptable failure for any appliance, much less an air conditioner designed to operate for hours inside an occupied bedroom. A product whose entire purpose is circulating indoor air should not catastrophically fail in a manner that suddenly fills a sleeping area with unidentified chemical and burnt-oil fumes without any warning whatsoever. The unit was purchased only five months ago and has seen extremely limited use, primarily at night during warm weather. I have never experienced an air conditioner fail this severely, or this quickly. Because we experienced physical symptoms after prolonged exposure, we are documenting the incident and may seek medical evaluation. We are also documenting any cleaning or property damage associated with the apparent oily contamination. DREO should issue a full refund immediately and address the consequential damages caused by this failure. More importantly, DREO needs to investigate whether this represents a broader safety defect. Had this occurred after we were already asleep, we might have continued breathing these fumes for hours without realizing what was happening. A five-month-old air conditioner should not fail like this. For an indoor appliance capable of operating overnight while people are sleeping, this raises extremely serious concerns about product quality, reliability, and safety.

The DREO 12000 BTU is effective at cooling but results may vary a little depending on the size of your room, and the amount of home insulation. ————————- What I tested: 1. I measured how loud and soft the AC unit gets. 2. I measured the ability to cool a 120 sq ft room with 1 energy efficient dual pane window. 3. I also measured the ability to cool a 250 sq ft vaulted ceiling room with 3 energy efficient dual pane (low E) windows with the sun beating down on 2 windows in the afternoon. ————————- Notes: -I have standard attic insulation and dual pane windows throughout. So my setup may be different than yours. -One may consider putting insulation wrap around the exhaust hose. It gets very warm, which may interfere with your ability to cool the room (I only tested with wrapping on the exhaust hose). ————————- TEST 1: Noise level -I used the Decibel Meter app on my phone (not sure how accurate the app is). -At the loudest setting, i measured 63 db at 6 in. from the mouth of the fan and 59 db at 5 ft. This is a tolerable level for an office. -At the softest setting, I measured 59 db at 6 in. from the mouth of the fan and 53 db at 5 ft. - The advertised lowest loudness is 45 db but i was only able to record 45 db at 13 ft away. **CONCLUSION: My readings show that the AC unit is not as quiet as described by the advertisement unless you are 13 feet away, but is quiet enough for some. **Thus, I am taking a 1/2 star off.** ————————- COOLING TEST 1: 250 sq ft room with vaulted ceilings and 3 energy efficient dual pane (low E) windows -I set the thermostat to 68F. It took under 1 hour to drop from 75F to 70F. My 3 calibrated digital thermometers read 70F. So, there is a difference of 2 degrees F between the Dreo thermostat and the 3 calibrated thermometers. Thermometers were equidistant from the AC unit at different parts of the room. -Recording of temperature stopped when the temperature from the 3 thermometers no longer decreased for 15 minutes. **CONCLUSION: The unit cools as intended for a 250 sq ft room, even with a thermostat discrepancy of 2 degrees F. [issue resolved-see edit below] ————————- COOLING TEST 2: Same 250 sq ft room with vaulted ceilings and 3 energy efficient dual pane (low E) windows -I set the thermostat to the LOWEST setting, 61F. It took under 2.5 hours to drop from 77F to 66F. My 3 calibrated, digital thermometers read 66F. So, there is a difference of 5 degrees F between the Dreo thermostat and the 3 calibrated thermometers. Thermometers were equidistant from the AC unit at different parts of the room. -Recording of temperature stopped when the temperature from the 3 thermometers no longer decreased for 15 minutes. **CONCLUSION: The unit cools as intended for a 250 sq ft room. The difference in 5 degrees F between the AC thermostat and my calibrated thermometers has been observed in other Amazon reviews for the Dreo units. **Thus, i am taking another 1/2 star for the temperature discrepancy of 5 degrees F.** [issue resolved-see edit below] ————————- COOLING TEST 3: 120 sq ft room with 1 energy efficient dual pane window only (no high ceiling) -I set the thermostat to the LOWEST setting, 61F. It took under 2 hours to drop from 80F to 66F. My 3 calibrated, digital thermometers read 66F. So, there is a difference of 5 degrees F between the Dreo thermostat and the 3 calibrated thermometers. [issue resolved-see edit below] Thermometers were equidistant from the AC unit at different parts of the room. -Recording of temperature stopped when the temperature from the 3 thermometers no longer decreased for 15 minutes **CONCLUSION: The unit effectively cools a 120 sq ft room. It was somewhat quicker to cool a 120 sq ft room than a 250 sq ft room. Unfortunately, the same discrepancy of 5 degrees F between the AC thermostat and my 3 calibrated thermometers was observed in 2 different tests (in the 250 sq ft room and the 120 sq ft room). ————————- OTHER FEATURES: -It feels well built. -I like that it has an app to let you control it from your phone. -*I used a digital scale to weigh this item at 64.8 lbs. The advertised weight is 62.9 lbs. It is heavy, but this is normal for other portable AC units that are similar in size.* -It comes with a window vent kit. It also comes with weatherstripping unlike other kits, which I like! -I wish the exhaust vent came with insulation wrap (It gets VERY warm) and may inhibit your ability to cool a room. -I have been using this Dreo unit for less than 2 weeks without issues and i have not yet had to drain the tank. ————————- ****FINAL REMARKS: Unless you got a lemon, this AC unit is able to cool a room on a hot day. I recommend it to other prospective buyers. -Despite an observed thermostat discrepancy of as much as 5 degrees F [issue resolved-see edit below] effectively cooled a 120 sq foot and 250 sq ft room by as much as 14 degrees F and should be able to cool more. Results may vary depending on room size and insulation. - DREO offers a 30 month warranty. You just need to go to dreo.com/warranty and enter your amazon order number and date of purch _______________________________________ Edit( 9/12/2025): A firmware was automatically downloaded by the AC unit. Purchased to replace a four-year-old failed unit of a different brand. Arrived next day with no damage to the package or contents. Amazon sent a truck and driver properly equipped to handle large, heavy deliveries, something they have not been good about over the years. Perhaps they have made improvements, at least locally. Unpacking and setup is basic and similar to other portables. The single hose is much more flexible and accommodating than the rectangular double hoses; just understand that you are pulling warm outdoor air into the house from "somewhere" to replace the hot air discharged through the hose whenever the unit operates in AC mode. The variable-speed inverter-drive runs very quietly and produces cold air (just measured at 61 degrees F). The wide squirrel cage blower directs air straight out, not to the right or left as some units do. There's very limited voltage drop and the lights don't dim on our 15-amp circuit when the unit starts. The large bright display can be dimmed, which we appreciate. The remote operates well. The filters can be removed and replaced relatively easily. We run it upstairs in a very large 500 sq ft area, which is open to an even larger cathedral-ceiling area, so it's operating way beyond the rated conditions. However, it manages to keep our lives tolerable sleeping upstairs in conditions ranging up to high temperatures around the mid-90s. However, this requires planning ahead and cooling early in the day before outdoor temperatures climb in the afternoon. Apparently Dreo is a new brand; so far I'm very impressed. Fingers crossed for long-term reliability.

VERDICT: I highly recommend this DREO, especially if you buy it on sale. It's really worth your money. After hours reading reviews (from pro's & real folks), I'm so so glad I did not buy the cheaper SereneLife SPAC12 (same BTU) that got glamorous professional reviews. All theses reviewers really missed the big issue with most SereneLife ACs: their ill-designed windows mount system. My DREO was on sale so it was just $90 more expensive, BUT IT WAS SO WORTH. I was actually about to get the SereneLife when I stumbled upon users complaining about their windows mount system. I didn't think about it at first, then I started to think about it and started to research the issue. OMG!! I couldn't even find the measurements, sizes, NADA, NOTHING!! HUGE deal breaker. Their windows mount is just a F%^& real pain. After hours or research and time wasted, I concluded it was not compatible with my 30" wide windows or less. Like many users you'd need to saw your mount panels and it doesn't even come with foam insulation! Or like many, you'd waste a lot of time unpacking, repacking, dealing with support, returning the heavy thing etc. Honestly the money saved was not worth the pain at all. The DREO comes with none of these inconveniences. I confirm it's as reasonably quiet as users describe. I had another 12K BTU portable AC 10 years ago, it was much louder. This one sounds like a cat compared to my old AC. PROS: • Packaging is neatly designed for ease of out-of-box removal and re-packaging if needed. Has wrappers/tighteners around which are very convenient for lifting and pulling. That was my biggest worry, how to bring it up the stairs? Problem solved thanks to these plastic wrapper/tighteners. LIFTING TIP: use the plastic wrappers around the package to pull. Go step by step, slow. DREO team or VP, if you read this, please don't ever remove these plastic wrappers/tighteners. It's the only way for 1 person to move it up thru the stairs. • Not too heavy: I'm not very strong and was able to lift it over 2 flights of stairs. It was not easy but definitly a workout, but not impossible. • It works really great: I ran this test in the evening. It was 69F outside but 86F inside as my apartment traps heat whenever we have heat alerts (90F today). My huge living room & office den are about 600 SqFt or slightly more, and they are connected to the rest via a hallway. I also had an extra fan running to evenly spread the cold air. I set it the DREO for 74F. Within 10mn, temp' dropped to 85F, another 10mn then it dropped to 84F. Then it struggled a bit, it took about 20-30mn to reach 83F, then quickly dropped to 82F then 81F within 15mn each time. I don't like AC so at 84F, things were already pretty comfy and cool for me. I could have stopped there but I decided to run further the test out of curiosity. Once we reached 79F I stopped the test. TIPS ON FOAM INSULATION: • Before you install the foams as per their instructions, do yourself a favor, clean up first the area where you'll put that foam on. • The adhesive foam can be removed but it's quite sticky and can leave a visible mess on your windows plastic frames if you're unable to take it out all in one piece which becomes tricky to clean. So do this instead: you don't really need to use their adhesive. Use instead a piece of Scotch tape where needed to hold the parts in position. That's all you'll ever need. Then you'll be able to re-use the foam if you move the AC around in a very easily manner without the need to scrap and clean up the adhesive. CONS: • The foam adhesive is too sticky. They could improve the formula to allow an easy and clean removal for reuse. That's all really. I'll update later anything new comes up or after a full summer of use.

The day after my DREO arrived my area was hit with a 5 day heat wave. I was so impressed with how well this portable ac kept my bedroom cold, not cool but COLD! I don’t feel it is too loud. I like that you can turn the front display off. I love that I can control the temp from the app on my phone. So easy to set up and actually doesn’t look bad in my bedroom. Only complaint is it is very heavy and was a bit of a hassle getting up to the 3rd floor of my apartment. It’s great for anyone that doesn’t want the hassle of having to put in and then remove a window unit in the winter. Money well spent!
