  • My favorite game--a great story with CHOICES.
Platform: PC
I've been a gamer my whole life, and this is my very favorite video game. It's not the best RPG ever made--I'd give that distinction to Elder Scrolls IV and V, which have almost perfectly real graphics and more freedom than you know what to do with. However, while perfect freedom and realism are all great characteristics of a video game, their lack is why I love Dragon Age (and its sequels, though this is my favorite). The best part is that it is based around a really great, but highly flexible story. Remember Final Fantasy VII and IX (back when they were good)? Those games are classics not because of the game play, but because of the well-written storylines. Unfortunately, they were all linear--Cloud had to go through steps A, B, and C before he could fight Sephiroth, and then they fought, and then D happened...and you didn't have any choice in any of it. Well, In Dragon Age, you get the pleasure of experiencing an excellent, well-thought out storyline, in which everything you do works toward specific goals and culminates in an awesome final battle. But you ultimately get to pick how the story goes. It's like one of those pick-your-ending books, but so much better because, you know, it's a video game. You get to interact and have pretty believable, interesting, and surprisingly deep relationships with your companion characters (I've personally got a thing for Allistair). (Oh, and there are even options for homosexual relationships, if you like). You could play the game 20 times and it would still be interesting because of the wide variety of choices you have. Also, you can transfer your game to the sequels, so your choices here can affect what happens later--which is pretty dang cool. This is not a mindless, hack-and-slash game. It's a thinking game. Actually, it has quite a lot in common with the Baldur's Gate games, but even better because it's 15 years later. You control a whole party of people with individual skills, and you have to use your brains and charisma to lead them all in battle and elsewhere. The art is good-looking and interesting. The voice acting is way above average (though not perfect). The game play is very good--I've played it on XBox 360 and PC, and I I think I prefer the PC version because the keyboard helps with the complexity, but it's good either way. About the "Mature" rating: it's not a youth-friendly game. There's a lot of freedom of choice, which means you can make choices that lead to some moderately explicit (bordering on rated-R) sex scenes. These scenes are avoidable, if you choose differently, or skippable, however. There's also the usual blood and gore, but you can set the blood spatter, etc. to be more or less explicit. It's got nothing on games like BioShock or Resident Evil, though. I'm pretty conservative about my entertainment, but I didn't have a problem because I don't mind a little gore and I could skip the sex. ... show more

  • An Expansion You Can Truly Enjoy
Platform: PC
The Awakening expansion for Dragon Age is nothing short of awesome. It makes you feel like you've picked up where you left off in Dragon Age, allowing you to even import your main character from the previous campaign. As far as the gameplay is concerned, it is the same great Dragon Age, but it has an entirely different feel than Origins in that you're starting from level 20 so you have lots and lots of abilities to play and work with. There is also a large increase in the number of sustained abilities that one can utilize. This can be quite effective when you start stacking auras and/or sustained abilities. Consequently, Willpower becomes a sought after statistic in order to actually utilize the plethora of abilities at your disposal. Fighting itself is more intense and some of the new abilities, like Massacre, are extremely entertaining. I play on Nightmare difficulty and I found Awakening to be easier than regular Origins for two reasons: the first is because there are so many more abilities to work with and the second is because there are books that one can buy for 12 gold to customize characters' abilities entirely from level 1. This allows you to craft your group to have an unmatched synergy. It also allows for trying new and different tactics / builds with your characters. Unfortunately, the ease of play also means that you breeze right through the game, so it can feel rather short in comparison to the monster that was Origins. The group and party dynamic feels different in Awakening as well. To gain approval rating, you have to have a member present in your party and happen by some object in the terrain that invokes a conversation. This means you can't just spam-talk to your party members to gain approval like you could in regular Origins. Finally, the storyline is fantastic and Awakening does a great job of bringing good moral choices to the forefront, setting new standards for games. In Origins, despite all of the different factions and gray areas, there was still the feeling of "good" verses "evil" when it came to you verses the darkspawn. Without spoiling anything, Awakening does an excellent job of turning this polarized standard on its head and it even brings the darkspawn themselves into the gray. The questions it forces one to ask and the choices it causes one to make imitate moral choices in real life instead of keeping the polarized fantasy outlook that so many of us are familiar with. It is refreshing and it really puts a huge twist on the storyline, making one question their own purpose as a sort of hero of Ferelden. I do feel it could have been explored a bit more and perhaps the ending was a bit rushed in its conclusions, but I'm sure we can look forward to exploring that storyline further in the next expansion. For those more interested in the character development aspect that is present in Origins, while some of the basics still remain in Awakening, Awakening is more fighting and less songs by the fire. Even still, I don't think it will disappoint as the loads of action can make up for it. In short, if you loved Dragon Age, Awakening is a must have and it is a blast to play. ... show more

  • This is one of the best games I've played.
Platform: PC
It isn't perfect -- no game is, but this was so much fun! I love it! After I completed it, I immediately started over, because I wanted to see what changed if I made a different race or made different choices. I'm almost finished with my third play through, and I still like it just as much. The story is exciting, the characters are engaging, the ability to create and personalize your own character is satisfying and helped make me feel more invested in the game. The combat system took me a little bit to figure out, but once I got it, it was easy. (If you've ever played "Neverwinter Nights", it's almost exactly like that.) No matter how bad the reviews may be, I will play all the "DA" games, simply because I enjoyed this one so much and want to see where the story goes. ... show more
