  • Great Tone + Easy on Your Frets and Your Fingers!
I originally installed these on my semi-hollow body Gretch D6128 Thunderbass in an attempt to cut down on the string and fret noise I was getting with conventional strings. These not only reduced those issues considerably, the tone is fantastic! I have been using these on the Gretch now for over 18 months and have nothing but praise for these strings! The red color also adds a very unique look to the instrument and I am always getting compliments on the look! In addition to my D6128, I have also installed a set of these on my Candy Apple Red Fender Jaguar short scale bass with equally impressive results. The string itself is the time tested DR Sunbeam round core with the custom micro-coating applied. The same great tone you get from the Sunbeam string with the added benefit of reduced string and fret noise. I can't recommend these strings highly enough for anyone looking for a quality coated string. (Be sure to check out the photos I posted of my two guitars running Red Devils!) ... show more

  • Look cool, but that's about it.
The G string was completely dead, was about 1/2 the volume of the other strings. The tone went extremely dull after about 2 days on the other strings. These are very stiff strings, which I don't mind if I get the tone normally associated with stiffer strings, but I did not get that tone out of these. I put these on a brand new bass project I had been working on. The tone was so dull that I thought there might be something wrong with my wiring or the pickup itself. I out on a different brand of sting of a similar gauge and the bass came alive. The coating is pretty high friction as well, the opposite of what coated string were meant for in my opinion. ... show more

  • Good sound, nice feel
I gig often and have used these strings for about a month so far and am pleased with the tonal quality and the feel. I'm a little disappointed the red color is coming off in areas i play frequently. Wish there were a way they could color the steel permanently. Even with the coating issue, i still am giving these strings 5 stars because the other attributes are more important to me. ... show more

  • Great sounding strings with the added bonus of color
These strings were reccomended to me by an acquaintance of mine during a bass clinic I attended recently. I ordered them right away.. All i can say is WOW! Excellent tone. It really brightened up my sound. I had gotten used to muddy sounding strings. I havent noticed a sticky feeling like others have mentioned, mine are silky smooth. Great playability. Was'nt too concerned about color, But When I installed them on my Ferrari red Carvin LB 70, I fell in love with my bass all over again. It looks stunning, and I get many comments about my bass now..Others have mentioned that the color wears off quickly, but I don't care, I'll used the color wear as a guage of when to change them..Then neon ones even glow brightly under a black light. Bass players don't get much credit so why not give them a show and something to talk about. ... show more

  • Red devils
On my second set... I have been a huge DR string fan for many years and use their strings exclusively. I have been using the black beauties on all 3 of my basses for over 2 years now, just decided to try the red devils. So far, they perform the same as the black beauties do and sound just as good only the strings are red instead of black. They are however not quite as "bright" sounding as DR's "high beams" are, atleast not on my basses and through my rig, but pretty close. That is something maybe to keep in mind about coated strings, but they do outlast standard strings by quite a while! They do look great on my red bass though and look pretty cool under a black light and concert lighting! ... show more

  • Great looks, but not durable and not so great sound
These strings look and feel great, but the paint starts wearing down after just a couple of days of rehearsal. I wasn't impressed with the sound, and just others have pointed out, you could expect one or two strings in the set to sound dead compared to the others. I ordered two sets and returned one after my experience with the first set. ... show more

  • Just what I expected.
These are pretty decent bass strings. I didn't notice any difference in sound from my regular round wound strings, maybe a little less bright, but the strings do have kind of a gummy/sticky feel to them. Especially if you don't keep them clean. They attract finger oil like you would not believe. You have to press a little harder with your fingers and the coating makes it a little more difficult for sliding around. So you do have to sacrifice a little for awesome red strings on a black bass but I feel the sacrifice is worth it and they definitely add some stage drama. ... show more

  • Novelty
I ordered these strings a few weeks ago, and they got here in a timely manner, nothing quick. I strung them on my bass as soon as they came, and they look great. However, there is a minute difference in the shade of red in the G and D strings, as opposed to the A and E strings. Minute, but somewhat noticable. They do play great, but the coating wears rather fast. I run under the motto "Picks are for D***s, (meaning I don't use a picks to play.) I haven't used one on it yet, but I let my bandmate play on it for about 5 minutes with a pick, and there is already a show of wear and the silver of the string underneath is starting to reveal itself around the pickup area. I do trust the life of the string as advertised. The only thing that wears is the color. Come back in about a year, and I bet I'll be still poppin' on these strings. I expect the color not to last long, which is a disappointment, because I bought them under the impression that they would have a durable coating. As for now, they blend well with my red bodied Dean bass, and I'm happy. For all of you, I'd say go ahead and try them. They are in the medium pricing range and worth the next couple of months of color and year of durabilty. ... show more
