[Warning: This review contains spoilers!!!] Seriously, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Yes, there were tropes that made it predictable in some aspects. I mean, come on! It was marketed as Fourth Wing with Chinese mythology and tigers! That being said, the author made it unique enough that I devoured it like expensive chocolate. *Chef's kiss* I love the different kingdoms (dominions), their celestial guardians and magic systems. I don't want to reveal too much, but it was nice touch making it mirror real life beliefs and prejudices. Anyways... I loved the FMC, Rubi. She is flawed, and I question her thinking a lot, but still she's very easy to root for: she's loyal, brave, protective and a complete badass! I do believe she falls for a pretty face too easily. 😅😆 Speaking of a pretty face, our MMC, Blake, was a little meh to me in the beginning. However, his character reveals a lot more depth as the story progresses. 👀😉 The Bonding and Pairing aspects were also intriguing; it's not an exact copy-and-paste from other similar books like this. I do feel like I wanted more romancing between Rubi and Blake. It felt a bit too fast-paced and convenient. Otherwise, I loved them coming together despite their many differences. 🥺💖 Oh! I cannot forget about the "tygers"! They, along with the different animal companions, were the highlight for me. I wish we got more interactions with the other tigers. So, we can see a bit of their personalities versus their riders. All in all, this was such a special and wild read for me! I can't wait how the story develops after the shocking reveals at the end!!! 🤯🤭🤔

I admit, part of why I got this book was it is so pretty, and the inside map is so neat - easy to figure out where all the action is taking place. Once I got into the story, I was hooked! I love the idea of tyger riders, interesting and different magic and of course, it doesn't hurt to have a smoking hot hero who can manipulate iron! I'm in the middle of it and love where it's going. The story is so neat and intriguing and I love the characters. Definitely glad the gorgeous cover art grabbed my eye (along with a recommendation from an author I adore).

"...I was the metal, and he was reshaping me piece by piece." OH MY GOD. I absolutely ate this book up. I finished it within twenty-four hours because apparently sleeping and behaving like a functional person were no longer important. I am completely obsessed, and everybody needs to go and read Dominion immediately. “It should have been easier for me to start over, completely anew. But the absence of memories didn’t rid me of the pain of loss, a deep well of feeling with no traceable source.” The world-building was incredible. The world is split between the Silver Tyger, Red Phoenix, Azure Dragon, and Onyx Tortoise Dominions, each with its own magic, culture, and even distinctive hair colours. I loved being able to immediately recognise where people supposedly “belonged”, while the story explored how complicated identity and belonging really are. Rubi is an Azure refugee living within the Silver Tyger Dominion after the Annihilation destroyed her homeland and shattered her memories. She has no idea who she was before, but she refuses to let that make her powerless. “But here in this moment, with my ribbons and the heavy beat of the drum, I wasn’t Rubi, the Azure woman with no memories. I wasn’t less. I was silk and breath. I was power.” I loved Rubi. She was vulnerable without ever feeling weak, and her ribbon dancing and singing magic made her feel completely unique. Her journey wasn’t only about discovering her past but also about deciding whether that past should define who she becomes. “Your past may be your starting point, but your choices now define who you are.” And then there were the tygers! The bond between the tygers and their riders will naturally remind people of books such as Fourth Wing or Dire Bound, but Dominion still felt like it had its own identity and mythology. Flame, Kingsolver, and the other tygers were incredible, and I became far too emotionally attached to them all. I also adored Couscous, especially after learning in the acknowledgements that Jean included her real-life cat in the book. Everybody who knows me knows I am an absolute sucker for a cat. And Rainbow the chicken was 100% giving Heihei vibes from Moana. No thoughts. Just chicken. An icon. Now, Blake Axefire. WHAT. A. MAN. He is a terrifying metal mage, leader of the royal tyger warriors, and the perfect balance of ruthless, loyal, protective, and secretly vulnerable. He isn’t one of those supposedly dangerous men who turn out to be completely harmless. He is genuinely dangerous, but Rubi gradually sees the man beneath the reputation. “Maybe he was all shades of gray and less black and white. Maybe he was yin and yang and balance—maybe he was both.” The romance was sheer perfection. Rubi and Blake had incredible chemistry, tension, banter, and genuine emotional intimacy. She challenges him, sees through him, and refuses to be intimidated, while he becomes increasingly devoted to her in a way that is both beautiful and mildly terrifying. “When I saw you dancing, it was as if I caught a glimpse of clear sky after a long, dark storm.” And Blake calling her “songbird”? I fear that pet name has permanently altered my brain chemistry. “You are a songbird and your song…it’s irresistible. Ties me up in gods-damned knots, as if you’ve wrapped me in your ribbons. And I don’t want to be untethered from you.” UGH MY HEART!! He also manages to turn practically every dangerous situation into flirting: “You’re bleeding. Take off your shirt.” “I’ve been waiting to hear those words from you.” One of my favourite little details was Blake repeatedly telling her: “You’re not dead yet, Rubi.” It becomes almost a catchphrase between them; part challenge, part reassurance, and somehow grows more meaningful every time he says it. But it was the genuinely emotional moments that really got me. “Blake, I don’t know who I am. I don’t belong anywhere. There is so little that anchors me, and I’m so afraid of losing that, too.” “You won’t lose me.” The found-family elements were also gorgeous. Quinn, Edith and Calla, in particular, always had Rubi’s back. Rubi begins the story feeling as though she has no history or true place in the world, but gradually finds people who choose and love her regardless. There were also so many characters I couldn’t fully trust and, in several cases, with very good reason. I was never entirely sure where the adventure would take me. I figured out one part of a major revelation, but even that didn’t unfold how I expected. Jean Kwok let me feel clever for approximately five minutes before adding several more layers and completely destroying my theories. And that final plot twist?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN?! I genuinely had to message Jean and tell her I would be staring at a wall for three to five business days because I need the next book immediately. Dominion gave me fascinating magic, incredible world-building, bonded tygers, found family, political intrigue, hidden identities, dangerous trials, and a romance that had me grinning, screaming, and clutching my chest. Rubi was fierce, Blake Axefire was everything, Couscous was perfect, and Rainbow the chicken deserved international recognition. Five enormous stars. Everybody, go and read it right now.

This is a little bit of a hard review. I did have fun reading parts of this book, but other parts made me cringe a bit. Some of this book was really fun. It was a grand adventure that took us in a lot of different directions. The book really did cover a lot of ground and a lot happened. I think the author did a good job keeping the plot moving and did not slow down. I was never bored reading this, so that is something. In today's age it feels like authors are always trying to go at a snail's pace so that they can strech less plot into more books, and this book did not feel that way. It was engaging and I did love the tigers and the animal shifters. I do plan on reading on in the series and so I would kindly like to ask that the author hurry up and write more. Sadly there were some things that frustrated me about the story. The biggest is that the romance in this book is instalove. We have them go from them barely knowing each other at 25% to them <spoiler>having s*x at 50% through and then deciding that they are in love and want to bond at 75%.</spoiler> Some of this is personal, I prefer so burn with more build and better development. Also I really dislike <spoiler>love "triangles." Personally this is one of my most disliked tropes, and so the part at the end where we find out about Rubi and Draven just really pushed me out of it. And then Jace trying to force himself into the situation. Ew no thanks. </spoiler> Overall that is not enough to push me away from reading the rest of the series, but it is enough to make me think that it won't be a top read of 2026 . "I felt their eyes crawling over me, striping me bare. Every glance sliced deeper. They knew I didn't belong here in this barrowed dress." One final element that is both good and bad is how the author describes everything visually. There is a lot of visual language in this book. I never had an issue visualizing how things were or what things looked like. However, there were time when I felt overwhelmed and just skipped over some of it. Like I just did not need endless descriptions on what the characters were wearing. I appreciate a good visual, but this got to be a bit much. And it also feels like everything I know about the characters is very surface level. I couldn't tell you much about personalities of many of the characters. They just were. So I know what everyone looks like and probably know what they're wearing, but on a deeper level? I honestly don't know. I even could tell you what characters were eating because that was described in detail as well, but what was the favorite food of these characters? Also don't know. Most people were surface level average characters. The typical good girl who has a mysterious past, the typical strong handsome love interest, the typical bubbly best friend, the typical plantonic other best friend. Even some of the bad guys were just so very much a basic evil bad guy who just <spoiler> wanted to rule but no real motivation or personality or reasoning why.</spoiler> As a result most characters feel very "blah" to me, but again because I had enough fun with the plot, I will continue.

This story was very good. While it did have similar themes to many romantasy series it had its own spin on things. Jean also did an amazing job creating the world and making it easy to follow along. The twist at the end was also something I was not expecting!

I loved this book! If you like Fourth Wing, you get a bit of that feel here with the Tyger riders and their Bonding. That being said, Dominion is still its own, unique story with battling demon, and trying to unite the four rival Doninion teams to reveal the Anchors and save the world. Oh, and did I mention romance? Because of course there is a steamy romance going on! Plus found family, a sassy Tyger, magic.. what more do you need? This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I cannot wait for the next one.

Have you seen a more gorgeous book!? I ran out and got this book as soon as possible and couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed this book so much, I’ve been in a Kpop demon hunters mood since rewatching it with my dogs and this hit the spot. No it’s not really in the same vein but it had action and magic powers and tiger shifters, political intrigue and just so much for me to enjoy. Also this book is just gorgeous! I love the world this is placed in, the world building and traditions were drawn perfectly so I could imagine being there. The different areas powers, rivalry’s and magic helped to lay foundation to the plot and the way the characters were drawn through the story, the surprises and secrets that were unveiled it just made me really want book two now. I think so much will be revealed in that book and I want to see how the characters progress personally as well as in their love story.
