I bought one of these several years ago at a local box retail store. I have used it hundreds of times but it finally broke. I immediately went back to buy another one but found out they no longer carry this model and the replacement is not nearly as good. So, I found this one on Amazon and immediately ordered it along with more refill pencil leads. Definitely would recommend, this pencil is awesome. Only improvement would be a better sharpener, the built-in sharpener isn't real sturdy, but does work. ... show more

    • Thick lead
The pencil is simple to use. But from my experience, be sure to sharpen the tip. The tip just crumbled when I tried to use it but was easily sharpened and did not break thereafter. The only thing I don't like is you have to retract the lead every time you place it back into the holder. There should be a groove down the holder that allows the slider to keep its position. My husband was really pleased with this gift. It would've been fantastic when we were building our home 23 years ago. There are still plenty of other projects he can use this for though.

    • Don’t buy expecting it to perform like the Pica Dry
I used my buddies Pica and really liked the idea of a mechanical construction pencil. When framing, I don’t want to waste time sharpening a carpenters pencil. Anyway, I expected this to function similarly, though I assumed it would have been cheaper quality. I could deal with that. This pencil does not save me much time. The pencil slides into its sheath fully only when you have a relatively new lead in it. The longer lead leaves the thumb ratchet (which slides down the length of the unit as the lead gets shorter through use) towards the top of the pencil. However, when you use more and more of the lead, the thumb slide gets in the way of the sheath. You have to fully retract the lead in order to store it in the sleeve. Again, this is not a time saver. I understand value engineering and assume it would cost Dixon a lot to re engineer the lead mechanism. What I would suggest, instead, is to incorporate a groove into the sleeve to the thumb slider can remain unobtrusive. I want to be able to take this pencil out and use it, not fumble with a plastic slider every time. ... show more

    • How have I functioned without this
Who knew something so simple could make such a difference. I built a shed and a playhouse for my grand kids in the last week, and this simple pencise had made a big difference in a fairly simple part.

I was referred to this product by a coworker after he noticed I used a standard carpenters pencil. I've used the same pencil for quite sometime and although I was content with what I needed it for, I went ahead and purchased this product. I have to say, it's great!
