I had decided to replace my wood burning fireplace with a gas insert. Then, considering the cost and the fact that I could no longer burn wood as an option, I looked into electric inserts. The more I read and saw, the more interested I became. Based on reviews and the realistic fire images I saw, I ordered this Dimplex. It arrived very quickly and set up to use even quicker—amazing! I couldn’t be more pleased! I had cleaned and prepared my old (100 yrs) fireplace and made it ready. After unboxing, the set fit perfectly into the space. Fortunately, I have an outlet close by and it is out of sight. Truly, it took only minutes to have this up and working. I have used it every evening for three weeks, though I have not yet used the heating option and rarely will. Decided to keep the old vintage cast iron fire back I had in place, and the way the “flames” reflect off that is really lovely. This insert is everything I want. So realistic, not monotonous, very atmospheric. I am thoroughly delighted. My one quibble: the front legs are very flimsy it seems. Despite being careful, one leg almost got damaged when I was moving the set into place. Can’t understand why these are not built stronger. ... show more

We've been using this for about two weeks now, and we couldn't love it any more. We have the fireplace on pretty much all day every day now that it's gotten cold. The unit looks realistic, takes less than 2 minutes to put together, and the heater on high, while not a furnace, is enough to take the edge off the morning and evening chill in our medium-sized living room. You can even stand in front of the fireplace and warm yourself the way you would against a real fire. PROS - Easy to put together. - The entire unit looks realistic (especially when you make just a few easy tweaks: see below). The plastic legs look like metal, the front logs and ember mat look exactly like smoldering wood, and the color of the flame lights are the color of real flames. The movement of the flames moves very much like, but not exactly like, real flames. - Heater actually warms the room. - In our space, the plastic reflector isn't really that noticeable during the day, and almost completely disappears at night. CONS - Perhaps when standing directly down and looking at the unit you can see the lights producing the flame effect, but that's about it. TIPS To make the unit even more realistic we did 3 things: - We added an Echo Dot inside the fireplace next to the unit and told Alexa to play "Fireplace Sounds" on loop to recreate the crackling of a real fire. - The edge of the plastic reflector panel catches the fireplace lights, so we used a black Sharpie on the edge to block that distraction out. - We sprinkled a little rock wool and vermiculite on the ember mat to block some of the light coming through (it was a little bright) and to emulate ash. And, for us, the far back log was the least realistic so we also sprinkled some of the vermiculite on that to make it more realistic. Worked great!     • Works well and looks nearly real

Our old gas logs were in need of repair and with the rising cost of gas we decided to replace them with this electric unit. Assembly is simple and straightforward. I was surprised that the andirons were plastic and appeared to be rather fragile, but they seem fine once installed in the fireplace. The logs have a close to real appearance and the remote allows you to adjust color, brightness, and flickering effect. The heat has high and low levels which has proven adequate as supplemental heat in our rather large family room . The remote does function at the distance of about 30 feet. However, you must be in a direct line with the receiver located in the center of the unit. The receiver can not see the signal from any other angle. Overall, we are pleased with the appearance and function of these logs. ... show more

    • Improve your quality of life - GREAT VALUE!

The media could not be loaded. PROS: How many ways can you think of to improve the your quality of life instantly for about $220? This electric log set instantly added coziness to my new (budget) apartment built in 1980 and helped to aid in relaxation immediately post-move. It has a meditative quality to it. Now, I just can’t imagine if I had moved into this apartment without it. If you have some slight social anxiety (or like the typical jitters when meeting someone new or new-ish), this is nice to have as a focal point while sipping wine. (: With the heater “off,” electric inserts are considered safe to leave on (like just the lights/illusion part "on"). It is plug and play! Just put the mirrored plastic piece in its place, plug in, and you’re good to go! In my size fireplace, I had to situate the base in first and kinda finagled the plastic piece in after that. I was worried that it wouldn’t fit, but it ended up being perfect (top of arch extends a bit but does not make it look any less pretty). Overall, this is beautiful and as realistic as one may reasonably expect - for this price point and well on up. I still cannot believe the value! CONS: Although turning the side/backlights on (and to the flickering setting) helps to disguise the shine of the plastic piece (as will a screen - great if you have one built into your surround already), you can see a bit of a glare on the plastic (the part that makes the realistic looking “flame” possible). However, this is not a major drawback as when the lights in your home are super dim or off at night (or even with just the TV on), you can’t really see the glare - especially with the side/backlight feature on. The remote could be more intuitive. For safety, I keep the instructions on the shelf with the remote. I may type up and laminate a simpler set of instructions on a card to keep with it. To avoid a panicked moment after you’ve enjoyed your cozy evening with the heater on, READ the instructions beforehand. Finally, this product could be more accessible. If you are unable to hear the “beeps,” you may not know how you have just changed the settings via the remote. There could be changes made to add indicator lights to the side of the base and/or remote to fix this. This would make usage more intuitive for everyone right out of the box. ... show more
