  • Works great with the "maverick" couch
This was exactly what I needed. I have the "maverick" couches aka Immersive audio sofa from Bob's its also sold as MotoMotion elsewhere. Trying to connect it to audio source has been a headache but this box has finally fixed the issue without having to get a AV receiver. My setup includes a modern Samsung TV with a samsung Ultraslim soundbar connected via WiFi and the couches connected via optical out of TV to the converter box. I went from the RCA connectors to a Low pass filter then out to 3.5 mm minijack to couch. I included the Low pass filter because I only wanted the LFE of the built in subs and tactile bass transducers. This set up works awesome and sounds great with minimal av equipment. ... show more

  • Works with Sennheiser RS120 and Panasonic Viera X1 Series TV
By now if you read many of the reviews you know that your TV must be switched to PCM in order for this device (or any D to A converter) to work for headphones. The only audio output on my Panasonic Viera X1 Series TV was the digital audio output so I could not directly plug in my Sennheiser RS120 headphones into the TV. After reading a number of D to A converter reviews I realized the TV must be switched to PCM output in order for a D to A converter would work with headphones. I could not find a Dolby/PCM switch in the menu of my Panasonic Viera X1 Series TV so I called Panasonic. (It cost me $10.00 to speak to them since this TV is out of warranty.) The Panasonic person told me the TV senses if Dolby or PCM is needed and automatically switches to the correct format. I was very skeptical but I went ahead and purchased the Orei DA34. To my surprise it worked. I plugged everything in (the toslink cable into the TV last) and, voilà, the sound came through the Sennheiser RS120 headphones. I haven't yet taken the time to evaluate the quality of the Orei DA34 so I'm not going to give it a five star rating just yet. After all, I don't think a product, (or a person, for that matter) should have the highest rating for just doing what it is expected. The real purpose of this review is to inform others "Works with Sennheiser RS120 and Panasonic Viera X1 Series TV" so I guess this is more of a review of the Panasonic Viera X1 Series TV than the Orei DA34, but essential information nevertheless. ... show more

  • Great Little DAC - Simple and Straightforward
I needed a digital optical audio to analog stereo line level analog DAC to enable near audiophile audio out to my deck. Using a small (24”) TV that supports a fixed level optical digital audio output, this product from OREI met the requirements perfectly. We now have a very cost effective and small form factor solution and have music outdoors for the summer season. The included +5V power supply and optical cable made installation fast. The small size allow me to hide the unit behind the TV, which met my spouse’s requirements. Thanks OREI ... show more

  • Easy to miss Gotchas..
Product works as described and is easy to setup. BUT It did NOT work for my intended use- TV optical sound output to subwoofer; until I did 2 things: 1) plastic must be removed from optical cable terminals (documented) 2) A tiny switch (almost hidden) on the side of the unit must be switched to optical for the device to work The default setting appears to be the coax input. ... show more

  • Annoyed I need it, but it does what it says, so can't complain
This is a very annoying product category - why can't TVs just have analog output jacks for sound? What's saved - $3.98 in parts and 1.5 sq. in. of back panel space? Anyway, this is pretty common now, and if you want to hook up powered speakers or headphones that lack an optical connection (like the excellent wireless Sennheisers I've had for several years and wanted to use), you'll need something like the DA34. It does the job well for a good price, so I love it. I found out the hard way that a non-5.1 decoder would not work with my Panasonic LCD TV (this is apparently also true of many LG models, a fact that is not obvious from their respective manuals), and had to return a PCM-only decoder. The DA34 DOES work with my television, solving the problem. Nearly double the cost, but it's still not that expensive. Very slight hiss/hum when quiet, typical electronic noise, not noticeable when listening to any actual source material. Notes on value - 1. In addition to being competitively priced and well-reviewed, the DA34 DOES INCLUDE a perfectly adequate optical cable. Some decoders don't, adding $5-6 to your cost if you don't have a spare TOSlink cable lying about. 2. I've seen the price difference between the DA34 and the deluxe metal-cased DA34X vary quite a bit in the past few months. When I purchased there was a $15 price difference, which didn't seem worth it to me, but I've also seen it as low as $6 (as I recall), at which point it would probably make sense. Check that out before you order and decide accordingly (as of this writing they were back to the $15 price gap). ... show more

  • Digital to analog decoder
This works well with my analog headphones. I am hard of hearing and my husband and I like to watch tv together. I can use my headphones and he can still hear the regular tv sounds. It has been a blessing.

  • Worked great for 6 months and then sound terrible
When it worked and it did work well on my new LG Nano tv for 6 months. The sound was excellent. I use Sennheiser wireless headphones. Then I first noticed a lag between spoken word and sound. Then then it got so bad that I could not understand anything on Netflix, Apple TV, Prime and on many network shows. Since I have had other decoders I knew it was not my Sennheiser. I checked all the cables and found that it was no longer doing what it was suppose to be doing and there was really no decoding at all. The sound was terrible-shrill and mostly unintelligible. When I bought it. OREI indicated I had a year guarantee. However, it is impossible to contact OREI or Bombay. When it worked it was excellent. When it stopped. The sound was awful. Just depends how you value 55 dollars. Too bad it seemed like an excellent product. I think I will buy cheaper ones then I can easily buy several a year because none seem to last too long. Good Luck Month later. I finally got a hold of OREI and they turned out to be very helpful. They honored the year warranty and sent me a new decoder. But the question is why don’t these decoders work. Oddly, I have read that most of them are not suppose to work with Netflix, Prime, Appletv, etc and are for the streaming channels which makes little sense. While dealing with OREI I used what I call my back up decoder and seems to have other problems-for example the sound on BBC TV was terrible. The sound on most regular channels was fine and the sound on Netflix, Prime, and Apple was very good. I am beginning to believe that the problem is the electronics of the optical out plus the decoder and that somehow the signal gets unstable which causes problems for the decoders. I believe the problem is that the damn TV producers did not put the audio out as they use to and their electronics on the optical out is not very good. Otherwise what causes these devices to go out. I have a new LG tv. I don’t see LG making a digital to analog decoder. On my old Samsung which I had for 9 years their was the audio out for the red and white connections as well as the optical out. Seems wrong to have to spend over a 100 dollars a year for these decoders which tend to auto destruct in a matter of weeks or months. Right. ... show more
