Description

Get ultimate comfort with DHP's 8-inch Independently Encased Coil Futon Mattress. This mattress will have you dreaming for days with its superior construction. Made with a base of independently encased coils, it provides equal weight distribution by contouring to the curves of your body and relieving pressure points along your neck, shoulders, back and hips. Each coil works independently of the others, only reacting to the pressure that is directly applied to the particular spring, resulting in greater comfort and support and reduced motion transfer. This futon mattress is topped with high- density foam, which provides exceptionally comfortable surface and best of all, it fits any standard full futon frame. The futon mattress is upholstered in a soft microfiber fabric with tufting details to provide the perfect finishing touches on an already great mattress. • Nothing special and difficult to fold
Style: Mattress Color: Merlot
I chose this futon mattress because of all the rave reviews. I wanted a spring mattress because I use my futon as a couch and the foam/cotton ones flatten out over time. This one is kind of like an old spring mattress that's nearly worn out. It's firm in the center but gets much less firm the closer you get to the edge. This creates a big problem when you try to fold it. Not only is it difficult to fold -requiring 2 people, but it leaves a big hump in the crease. This hump is not real comfortable on the lower back. I will try to refold using a 2X4 to get a better crease hopefully without the hump. If that doesn't work I'll just have to live with it and put a memory foam pad on the seat side for better support and firmness. All in all I'm a little disappointed and would strongly recommend getting the one with the hinge if you plan on using this for a couch. On the plus side, it has no smell. UPDATE: Using 3 people, 1 on each end and another pressing a wood board in the middle, I was able to fold the thing without a huge hump. There was still some bumpiness but I was able to press in with my hands to an acceptable level. Now it works pretty well as a couch. I'll bump up to 4 stars. The only thing preventing a 5th star is that the firmness isn't very even. Like I said earlier - softer towards the sitting edge. Overall I'm pleased as this is probably as good as you will get for $250. ... show more

  • I'm late with this- but want to praise it
Style: Mattress Color: Brown
I purchased this 8(yes 8) years ago when I planned to build my own futon frame. I got sidetracked and it remained in the packaging. Fast forward to a time just this past year where I decide to finally just buy a complete used futon used locally at a great price. I used the mattress that came with the futon for a couple of months, until I finally unpacked this one and let it expand. so -first a lot has to be said about the packing- it kept integrity for all of that time- and i live in an area and had it in a storage room where a bug or a mouse might have invaded something lesser, let alone just time deterioration, and it had none. I have been using this mattress for a while now and- it is the most comfortable sleep that I can remember- over any normal bed mattress even. it is just firm enough without feeling like a slab, or causing stiffness. -or to the other end of the spectrum- where you would sink into the mattress and throw your body out of alignment. This mattress is pretty perfect. It folds with the futon frame relatively easy ands that does not seem to impact the integrity of the mattress. I am highly impressed with this mattress and fully recommend it. ... show more

  • Mattress on a Mission
About a year ago, we got a mission style futon to replace our 20-year-old worn-out sofa. Our house is a Craftsman style bungalow, so the mission style futon fits nicely. However, the mattress that came with the futon was 4" thin and was never really comfortable. In a short amount of time, you could feel the bars of the futon when sitting, so I began searching for an improved replacement. Of those I found as possibilities, I read all the reviews and finally decided on this mattress. This mattress had mostly good/great reviews, but there were some negative and scary reviews: fabric tears, tufting plastic breaking, mattress splitting down the center, bad smells (mildew and chemical), and the worst (but in only a very few reviews): bed bugs. I read every single review, weighed pros and cons, talked it over with my husband, and we decided to give it a shot. It arrived very quickly. We decided to open it on our front porch in case of strong smell or bed bugs. The box was sealed with glue, and it was difficult to break into (we didn't want to use any sharp implements for fear of stabbing/slicing the mattress). Once we won our fight with the box, the rolled-up mattress was wrapped in a sheet of plastic, and then the mattress itself was vacuumed sealed inside more plastic. We unrolled the mattress and I was surprised at how easily it unrolled. We then liberated it from the vacuum seal (still on our porch). It, again surprisingly, immediately fluffed up. The smell, which was a common new textile smell, was so minimal, my husband didn't even smell it until he buried his face into it. I have a very keen sense of smell, and while I did smell it (without burying my face), it was exceptionally mild. (I'm wondering if some colors have a more intense smell than others.) We then unzipped the one end of the fabric cover and searched all the folds, nooks, and crannies and found no sign of any unwelcome guests. We then closely scrutinized the piping all around, all of the tufted areas, and the zipper seam (inside and out) and there was still no sign of unwanted hitchhikers. We were going to let it air out on the porch, but the smell was so minimal, we decided to go ahead and put it in place. It is heavy, but not horrible. It's more awkward than anything. But my husband and I easily carried it inside and put it in place. Bending/folding it into the seated position was also a little awkward, but again, not bad. Then we sat on it. I'm still sitting on it. Not only is it a major improvement in comfort, its stability makes it easier to sit down and then get up from the former thin, flimsy mattress. As far as sleeping, I haven't opened the futon to the bed position, but just stretching out across the seated position, it's very nice. It gives me great lumbar support, and I have a bad back. Laying on my side is also comfortable. For the money, I think it's a great buy. If anything significant changes after we've had this for awhile, I will update this review. I may even update it if nothing changes. I hope our review helps others in making their choice. ... show more
