  • Love these!
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 24)
These are one of my favorite colored pencils (tied with Holbein) 🥰. Excellent quality, a true soft core and dreamy colors. Holbein and Derwent Drawing are my favorites out of all the pencils I’ve tried because they have the least “dry” and least scratchy sensation when using. As a highly sensitive person in all the sensory ways, I’ve always hated colored pencils because of the scratchy noise and feeling, as well as the crayon-esque coverage/texture. I’ve been excited to find that some brands don’t have this issue, which has awakened a new mixed media lane for me ☺️ Here’s my breakdown of all the pencils I’ve tried: Holbein — high-end feel, a softer pencil (though not so soft you can’t apply pressure easily or control details), lays down smoothly with no scratchy sound or feeling, oily rather than dry feeling, really covers solidly with ease, shows up beautifully over watercolor & gouache. Lovely and wide color selection. Derwent Drawing — the softest pencil out there I’ve tried so far. The softness does make it a bit harder to control details unless you have a very sharp point. Also the thickest pencil I’ve tried with the biggest diameter color core — very pretty design & comfortable to hold. Really smooth and easy lay down, oily feeling rather than dry, dense pigment that shows up easily over watercolor & gouache. Very limited color palette but I personally ADORE all these particular colors for landscapes, botanicals & portraits. Prismacolor — a small step up in quality compared to Brutfuner, with most of the colors less dry feeing. Pigment load is much better though — on par with Holbein & shows up over watercolor & gouache. HUGE color selection and great price point, though not the most classy looking pencil out there — compared to the more expensive competition, these seem somewhat childish looking (to me, anyway). They are the narrowest pencil I’ve tried and not the most comfortable to hold but the color core diameter is equal to Holbein. Brutfuner Macaron Pastel set of 50 — a deliberate dupe of the Holbein set of pastels — very similar to Holbein & Prismacolor, though a bit more dry feeling, smaller color core diameter and less pigment load. Gorgeous colors that have dense pigment on white paper but don’t show up very well over black paper or watercolor/ gouache. A great set for the price. Faber Castell Polychromos — similar quality to Holbein, equal feeling when laying down to Brutfuner (more dry leaning but smooth and not scratchy), good pigment load & shows up well over watercolor and gouache. Luminance — a high-end feel soft pencil but definitely more “dry” almost chalky feeling when laying down. Shows up well over watercolor & gouache. A bit wider barrel than Holbein (about equal to Derwent Drawing) with an equal color core size. Lovely muted color selection but not the widest color palette available. ... show more

  • Soft, rich, and perfect for earthy realism!
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 24)
These Derwent Drawing pencils are a dream for anyone who loves natural, muted tones. The colors lean into the earthier side—lots of soft browns, greens, and greys—making them perfect for landscapes, animals, and anything with a realistic touch. The cores are buttery smooth and lay down pigment beautifully. They’re not as vibrant as traditional colored pencils, but that’s kind of the point—they’re meant for subtle, professional-looking shading and blending, and they do that incredibly well. They sharpen easily, and the tin keeps them nicely organized. Great for both beginners and pros who want to create warm, lifelike drawings. Highly recommend if you’re into wildlife, portraits, or outdoor scenes! ... show more

  • Every colored pencil artist should have some of these!
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 12)
I bought this 12 pencil set to replenish my dwindling supply of Derwent Drawing pencils, so this was not my first experience with the product. I have used them for several years- since Derwent first released them. I love them so much that I use them down to the tiniest nubs! Sometimes I even take the core out of the wood case and use it in a lead holder (Koh-I-Noor makes a good one for this). It is a chore t do this, but worth the time and effort because I do not have an art supply store within driving distance, and I have to order all of my higher quality supplies online. The earthy browns (chocolate, sanguine, sepia red, ruby earth) are quite rich, while the black and white are the most opaque of all of the colored pencils I have ever used. This was the first time I have tried the blues and greens in this line. The 12 piece set has the following colors: Ink Blue, which is a warmer, muted dark blue; Soloway blue, pale grayish blue which is perfect for clouds and eye sclera; Olive Earth- the name describes the color perfectly Green Shadow- a pale grayish green, which has more applications for nature drawing than I expected! Brown Ochre- a light golden brown- this color is more like the yellow ochre in other pencils in my opinion Yellow Ochre- a buttery mellow yellow- brighter and less "ochrey" that most yellow ochre shades, which tend to be more brown or gray Sanguine- a terracotta red-orange; I have older pencils from this line, one of which is named terracotta, and I cannot tell the swatches apart Sepia (red)- darker than Sanguine but in the same color family Ruby Earth- the closest approximation I can think of is madder brown- this is a cooler reddish brown than sepia or sanguine Chocolate- another self explanatory color Ivory black- dense, velvety black Chinese white- even softer and creamier than Prismacolor white; It will not blot out colors underneath, but it is one of the best white colored pencils on the market (my opinion) As others have already stated, many of the shades are muted, but not weak. Earthy tones are very rich, and they layer and blend quite well with other colored pencils. I use them along with oil and wax types including Derwent Artist and Studio colored pencils, Derwent watercolor and Inktense pencils; Koh-i-Noor Nero and Progresso lines, Primacolor Premier, and Faber Castel Polychromos. I only wish I had bought a larger set because now I want to try all of the colors! ... show more

  • wonderful pencils for drawing fur
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 24)
I recently purchased these pencils and I adore them. I've used them on both pastel paper and bristol board and they worked fine on both. The white and black in this line are really the best. The black in this is much darker than my prismacolor black pencil. These are much softer than prismacolor pencils. Imagine a combination between prismacolor premier pencils and oil pastels. I like the smudgy way they blend. These however are not for everyone. My prismacolor's hold a point better. These would be rubbish for detailed adult coloring books because they do not hold a point very well. People were commenting in the reviews that they liked them for portraits. I'm a portrait artist and I've done a portrait with them but I didn't love them for that purpose. They were perfect for drawing furry animals. I love the color range. It's really well thought out. Great greys for shadows. I do not recommend these for lots of tiny detail work, you'll be wasting them sharpening like crazy. I love these to pieces but will be buying some Faber Castell Polychromos for my most detailed work. Something important to know about these. They are incredibly lightfast, that's not common for colored pencils. All but one has the highest lightfast rating of 8 and the one that doesn't is a 7. This is important to me because I sell my originals and wouldn't want my work to fade on my customers. These work great with my prismacolor pencils so I often use both in the piece. The nose on the tiger drawing is the only part where I used prismacolor instead because there is no pink in the derwent drawing pencils set. ... show more

  • Amazing Colored Pencils!
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 24)
Years ago, I was introduced to Derwent Drawing pencils as part of a promo and received a 6 piece set through an art supply vendor. As a colored pencil artist, I was soon amazed at the quality, pigment and feel of these pencils. I liked them so much that I decided to recently upgrade to the full 24 set and saw that Amazon had a fantastic price. The colors in this set are subtle, beautiful shades that I could not find in other sets of popular pencils. These pencils are truly the elite artist grade colored pencil, in that they are super creamy/waxy and pigmented and layer flawlessly. Though they appear to be marketed for rendering animals, they are equally impressive for rendering flesh tones, and architectural pieces. They work very well combined with other pencils and layer well with oil-based or wax-based brands. The sensory feel of these cross between a wax- based and oil-based colored pencil but with wider leads. From what I've observed, they leave no wax bloom or excessive residue. The pigments are intense that you can go over several previous layers of colored pencil (other brands) and easily leave rich, broad strokes. They are perfect for final detailed accents on pieces. The Chinese White pencil in the set is also perfect for highlighting over layers of pencil, and covers well on darker papers. As for being erasable, they will erase to a certain degree on most paper. Though, they do so very well on black, smoother illustration board. They don't erase as well on other papers, but I find that if I apply them over subsequent layers of colored pencil, they erase better. For these pencils, paper choice plays an important role. They are bit too rich and bold for regular sketching/copy paper. I find that they work beautifully on vellum bristol, illustration board and erase especially well on black illustration board. They also hold up well on artist professional grade drawing paper that has a weight of 90lb or more. If you are trying to achieve a smooth finish, I probably wouldn't use these on general sketchbook or heavy, broad toothed paper or you will see a lot of the paper's texture. For the colored pencil artist or those with special interest in drawing, these pencils are very much recommended. They're well made, of excellent quality in durability and lightfast ratings (the colors won't easily fade) and the leads last a long time. *Important: You will need a wider hole pencil sharpener for these. Something metal and durable. The Derwent brand pastel pencil sharper is perfect for these pencils. I cannot say enough good things about these amazing pencils and am fortunate to have acquired the full set! ... show more

  • Fat pencils, great buy when they are on sale! Not so much when they are not on sale.
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 12)
These are some fat pencils with the largest cores I’ve ever seen! These are very nice quality and have a very nice look about them. Comes with a nice tin. Beautiful rich color, very nice lay down of color. Maintains a sharp point pretty well but not the best. Derwent is proven to be lightfast compared to the companies that do lie to you. They are great to use for landscapes. They don’t break easily from my experience. The Chinese White is the best white pencil on the market period. They are a great value for the money if you get them on sale. When they are not on sale, it is a rip-off and very much not worth it. Comparison shop with Blick Studio and you may see a price difference. As of 08-18-2026 Amazon has the 24 set for $63.34. Blick has the same set for $44.50. There aren’t enough range of colors to do everything you’d like to do, but it’s a great set to add to a collection or supplement an existing one. I have the 12 set and got them on sale. I indeed love them. ... show more

  • Beautiful colors & the best White Pencil I've ever found!
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 24)
These have to be one of my new favorite colored pencils ever. I've been a colored pencil artist for over 30 years, I even still have a few of my 1980s Berol/prismacolor out of print colored pencils. I use A lot of different brands from Caran D'Ache to Schpirerr Farben & Castle Art on the lower range pencils. I have several Derwent colored pencils & when I saw the muted tones of these drawing pencils I had to try them & I fell in love instantly! First, they are the typical Derwent pencil with the thick lead & nice heafty round barrel. They go on so smoothly & they are a soft lead. You can get beautiful blends with these pencils & the Chinese white that comes in this set is the best white I have ever used! I love this white! I even bought the small 5 piece set just to get an extra white! The colors will compliment any of the other Derwent sets & any other set for that matter. I've used them with my Prismas, Castle Arts, Caran D'Ache, Black Widows & Polychromos & they worked great with all of them! ... show more

  • Expect what they are made to do
Size: 1 Count (Pack of 24)
I love these pencils, but they have a particular character and expressive range, so acquire them only if you either already work in subtle hued, soft pieces or want to expand into that type of thing. My experience so far (and I have to say right off there are far more adept people using these pencils who can do much more, and who might not agree) is that they blend well enough, but don't actually create a mixed shade as well as might be expected. So you need to put color where you want it to a finer degree of precision than you might with others. And they lay down very readily, and don't keep a point too well. So you need to get used to their manner and speed of speaking and meet them where they are, but once you do, they are almost hypnotizing in the beauty of their texture and overall natural look. I am considering getting a 12 set of Derwent Artist pencils to add harder detail capacity and a very sparing bit of vibrancy to complement them. ... show more
