Comfortable design
I’ve previously tried two different designs of night guard, both a full coverage custom fit design, and a size adjustable ready to wear design. The size adjustable design just doesn’t seem to fit my mouth very well and isn’t very comfortable. It doesn’t seem to stay in place very well unless I’m deliberately biting down on it (which is counter-productive if you want to train yourself to not clench your jaw while you sleep), and I would often wake in the middle of the night chewing on it because it doesn’t stay in place very well. The full coverage custom fit design stays in place much better without any effort, but it’s a bit bulkier and I think it has shifted the alignment of my teeth over time. My teeth now feel slightly sore after waking in the morning as if the custom fit night guard has gotten tighter over time, and the custom fit athletic mouth guard I bought around the same time a couple of years ago no longer fits my teeth. I figured that the partial coverage custom fit design might be the best of both worlds, and I was right. This partial coverage design is still custom fit so it stays in place by itself, but it’s also less bulky than the full coverage design. The connecting piece fits behind your upper front gums, so it much less noticeable than the adjustable fit design where the connecting piece fits in front of your lower gums, and it's more comfortable. Since it’s only partial coverage, I don’t foresee any issues with this design inadvertently adjusting the alignment of my teeth over time like the full coverage design. Overall, it’s a very comfortable design and allows me to try to train myself not to clench my jaw while I sleep so that I may not need to use a night guard in the future.

ENDED UP LODGED IN MY ESOPHAGUS!!!!!
I bought this mouth guard last fall, because I was having tooth pain from grinding in my sleep. It worked great for a while as it’s small and comfortable but I did have issues with it staying in place. I woke up a few times when it had fallen out and I was chewing on it in my sleep, but I didn’t think much of it. Until the fateful night, I woke up at 3 am seconds after having swallowed the mouth guard. I felt it go down my throat and then felt it LODGE ITSELF IN MY ESOPHAGUS. This was incredibly painful. Every time I swallowed I could feel my saliva sit on top of the lodged mouth guard before painfully making its way past. I could literally feel exactly where it was sitting in my chest. I ended up having to go to the ER to having the foreign object removed from my esophagus. Luckily it didn’t do any damage to my esophagus and it was removed in a 4 minute procedure, but OH MY GOD DO NOT BUT THIS PRODUCT. It costed me a couple thousand dollars after insurance in hospital bills to remove. It is way too small and does not stay in place well enough. It is not worth it just buy a bigger bulkier one. Sure the bulkier ones aren’t as comfortable but let me tell you what’s uncomfortable. HAVING A PIECE OF PLASTIC LODGED IN YOUR ESOPHAGUS.

Absolute Dream for Anyone Who Grinds Their Teeth
Wish I had this 5 years ago. This mouth guard is hands down the best one I’ve ever used. I had a severe freak accident that almost took my life and it’s been years of surgeries and recovering. Because of that and a bad filling in 2021, I grind my teeth hard. I’ve tried all sorts of mouth guards over the past couple of years once I noticed how bad the grinding had become. None worked well. They didn’t fit right or caused too much of a headache in the morning. But this guard, it’s a Godsend!! Because you fit it to your teeth, it works so well. It covers your molars and prevents all of your teeth from touching with just enough space to not mess with your jaw alignment. Creating the mold was very easy. I used a pair of kitchen tongs to hang on the the mold while it was in the boiling water. Once the time was up, I waited 15 seconds and put it in to create the impression of my teeth. I’ve bought two of these now because I like to have a backup just in case I lose one. I’ve had my first one for months and it’s still fits just like it did the first time I used it. The material is extremely durable and isn’t too thick. I appreciate how it takes up so little space in my mouth by having just the molars covered and the small strip connecting them fit in the roof of my mouth. Others were so bulky and covering all of your teeth, similar to whitening trays. This one doesn’t keep me up by bothering me with having something in my mouth. It’s hardly noticeable. The material they use is soft, but durable, which helps me to not have headaches from wearing it. It’s an absolute lifesaver and I can’t recommend it enough!

Works well, not bulky
I finally decided to "do something" about grinding my teeth. My dentist showed me their bite guards, but openly admitted that they understand people not wanting to spend $400. I mean WOW. If you look around Amazon, the bite guards you see for $100 + are the same type the dentist uses. I first bought another less expensive guard, which was the same as what I remember using in football practice back in middle school...It worked, but very bulky, not very comfortable, and rubbed the front of my gums a bit. This one is much smaller and less intrusive. It only covers the part of your teeth that grind at night, instead of your whole upper set of teeth and gums. The molding process is a bit more critical. There's so little of this thing to work with, and it's so much firmer than the cheap type, you really need to follow the directions to successfully mold it. And bite HARD. Because the grooves you make into it with your teeth are the only thing holding it in place. It does sometimes fall out of place at night and at first I worried I might choke on it, but because of the shape, I don't think that's really a concern and definitely hasn't been an issue for me. I usually wake up realizing it's been incorporated into a dream of eating something and I realize it's out of place and I'm chewing on it. I just put it back in place and go back to sleep. Doesn't bother me.

Not convinced
Full disclosure, I attempted to use this on my lower teeth, which is not what it’s intended for. That aside, I have no idea how this is supposed to work for top teeth either. I followed the instructions to boil water and then place the guard, still in the holder, into the water for 3 minutes. When I then but down on it, nothing happened. My teeth barely left an imprint. As directed, I boiled the water again and put it back in. This time one side smooshed a little but the other side didn’t. I did this again a 3rd time, all the while noticing that the guard was shrinking each time, and when I pulled it out of the water to try again, the guard fell out of the holder. It was too small to put back in at that point, as the flat parts were too close together to even go back into the flat parts of the tray. This was honestly a disaster, but I’m giving it 3 stars since I recognize that it wasn’t designed for lower teeth. I can’t see it working for top teeth, either, but I hope it works for you if you try it.

Not cheap, but cheaper than new teeth.
Not cheap, but cheaper than new teeth. I tried the store bought "put in hot water to fit" style ones, they didn't fit great (yes I followed the instructions) and I tied but couldn't wear them regularly at night. These fit really well (they are molded off your own teeth after all), they are also wearing quite well (I grind my teeth hard, so they are getting tested). Ultimately, they are saving my teeth and saving me from headaches.

Stick with DenTek's Professional night guard
After quite a few years using the DenTek Professional-Fit Dental Guard for Nighttime Teeth Grinding, I decided to give their slimmer, less obtrusive "Ultimate" night guard a try. Needless to say, I didn't even get a chance to give it a run for its intended use, as the fitting process "ultimate"-ly defeated me. For those who don't want to read further, go with DenTek's "Professional" night guard, I wholeheartedly recommend that after years of use. For those who are curious about my experience, and how it may affect them, read on: The problems started almost immediately. After the proscribed boiling of water, the guard, still in its tray, was placed in that hot water for 3m30s. Upon removal, the guard was not pliant at all. It felt just a solid and hard as before. With this in mind, I repeated that step again, after which the guard seemed pliant enough and I began fitting. This is where I encountered the second problem– the tray and guard are MUCH narrower than the "Professional" guard by the same company. Although it appears that the tray should "flex" to fit the width of your mouth, in my case in never did. Despite my efforts to mitigate this, the outside of my teeth were in contact with the tray itself, with pliant guard being pushed inwards. This resulted in a quarter circle instead of a U shape cupping the teeth. As such, after the recommended fitting time the guard refused to cling to my teeth. Per the instructions, I returned to Step 1, put the guard and tray into the boiling water, and the guard immediately fell out of the tray. I gave it one more go but, by this point, the guard had shrunk and was curling in on itself so that it wouldn't fit in the tray anymore. This is the point where I gave up. For good or ill, I am an old hand at fitting DenTek's Professional guards, and have never had a problem with fitting (only one or two times needing a second go to get the fit right). I had high hopes for the Ultimate guard, but must heartily recommend against it.

3 problems: flat bottom, rough connecting piece, re-boiling ruins the guard
I had used two previous night guards, one made by my dentist ($750) and one bought from an online teeth guard company ($150). The $750 one was hard and very uncomfortable. The $150 one was better but still uncomfortable. I gave the Dentek Ultimate Guard a try because of its small footprint and low cost. Unfortunately, this guard also gets a fail for three reasons. First, after boiling, it only makes an impression of the upper teeth. The bottom side where the lower teeth meet the guard is flat. As a result, the lower jaw slides around against the night guard, causing misalignment in my bite. I feel that this could potentially cause problems for me down the road as I previously had braces to carefully align my bite. My other more expensive mouth guards have impressions on both surfaces keeping my bite aligned all night. The second problem, as other reviews have mentioned, is that the piece connecting the two sides is rough and uncomfortable. The third problem arose after I tried to re-boil the guard in order to make an impression for my lower teeth on the flat bottom surface of the guard. Boiling it a second time without the white tray holding the guard totally mangled the guard to the point where it was unusable. For me, this guard is a total failure. I threw it away and went back to using my $150 guard. As many reviewers mentioned, making the first impression worked well by using a pot of boiling water instead of the cup of water in the microwave. Here's what worked for me... Bring a pot of water to a rolling boil, reduce the heat, and put the guard (attached to the white tray) face down in the pot. Hold the tray down with a fork for four minutes. Take the guard out of the pot, checking the temperature of the white tray carefully with your fingers to make sure it will not burn your mouth. The blue guard will stay soft for a time even while the harder white tray cools. Once you determine that it will not burn your mouth, put the white tray with the blue guard inside against the upper teeth and bite down for two minutes. Put the guard in a room temperature bowl of water for 5 minutes to set. Pull the blue guard off the white tray. In conclusion, I give this guard two stars for its low cost and minimal footprint. For those that would not mind their lower teeth sliding around against the flat bottom, you can give it a try. Unfortunately, for me it goes into the trash due to the risk of bite misalignment, uncomfortable connecting piece, and completely ruining the guard by boiling it a second time.
