  • Custon fit, easy to use. It will fall apart.
Style: Professional-Fit Maximum Protection Guard
I am a heavy teeth grinder. My dentist has created a custom fit one--but it fit over my incisors and was very, very, VERY uncomfortable. I started looking for alternatives. This is one of the more common types of over-the-counter mouthguards--boil water, dunk guard until it softens up, bite over it, wait until it cools. Not terribly hard. And while it's much more comfortable fitting it over the upper teeth, it will work with lower ones, too. Here are the two downsides, though: 1. The guard sticks over the teeth as you remove it. I have some fillings on my teeth and I worry if it will remove it every time I imprint a new one. Likewise, it also sticks to the mold and is sometimes difficult to remove. 2. It says it lasts 6 months--but it will not last 6 months before cracking. It's more like "it'll last 6 months before the guard's imprinted portion literally splits in two and decouples from the plastic plate that separates the teeth." I'm not sure if that's what they meant, but that's about how it lasts with each one of these that I went through. And I'm sure I've eaten those tiny little plastic bits that broke apart as I slept. I'd get other mouthguards, but most--even including Remi, which comes with one guard for upper and lower teeth and is honestly not a bad a deal if it works with your teeth (their customer service is, unfortunately, pretty lacking)--won't take the abuse as gracefully as these; Remi would literally shatter after a few months. Other Dentek stuff aren't form-fitting, and often not comfortable. And for off brand guards... well... I'll continue to use these. I don't have a choice. It's probably the best one for my specific use case. But man, I wish there was a better choice. ... show more

  • Little Trouble with the Molding Process, but Completely Worth It
Style: Professional-Fit Maximum Protection Guard
I grind my teeth during my sleep, especially when stressed, and sometimes I grind so hard I wake up with a sore face and a headache that lasts most of the day. After some convincing, I got my dentist to admit that over-the-counter mouthguards could be worth it if you do the molding right, and he pointed me to this brand. I have to admit I struggled setting the mold correctly. After attempting twice, I slept with it in and felt my bite ever so slightly changing the way it felt when I had braces in. Not sure how that was possible, since they were my teeth. But I figured I must have messed up, so I requested a replacement to try one more time. The replacement worked great - I followed the instructions on the timing of each step exactly and used warm, not cold, water to dunk the mouthguard in after boiling it. It fits a little bulky in my mouth, and the material has formed a bulge right behind my front teeth that crowds my tongue. I've slept with it probably 5 nights out of every week for about 3 months and it's still in great shape. I clean it by dropping it in a cup of water with denture cleaner. Honestly, for a tiny fraction of the price over professional mouthguards (my dentist quoted me $700 - yikes!), this is completely worth the money and trouble. ... show more

  • Took me 2 to get 1 right. Great value for the price.
Style: Professional-Fit Maximum Protection Guard
I had an NTI nightguard that there are lawsuits over. It was recommended I throw it away so I needed a temporary nightguard so I got this DenTek guard for around $20-$25. I bought 2 just in case I messed one up. The first would just fall out of my mouth so I had to redo it with a 2nd nightguard. The 2nd fits much better. I could mail back the 1st to DenTek for a one-time replacement but decided not to mess with that. Great for a temporary guard in a situation such as mine. Some people say they literally chew right through these. These people must be some serious teethgrinders. After 3 months, I have like 2 little spots from high points on my teeth but it's not self-destructing. I suspect most using this won't chew right through this nightguard. ... show more

  • Better than all the other ones I tried so far
Style: Professional-Fit Maximum Protection Guard
Having used night guards for over 50 years, I found this one to be the best that you mold yourself. This is due to the fact that this one has a molding tray. I also, like the soft night guards over the hard plastic ones my dentist has made over the years. The hard plastic ones can still damage your upper or lower teeth depending on which location you use the night guard. The plastic ones do last longer but cost a lot more money. You will still have some pain regardless of which night guard you use if you grid your teeth. I also found over the years that the hard plastic ones were causing more pain than not wearing one, which is why I started using the soft ones. ... show more

  • If you have to wear one, this one is pretty good (10+ year wearer).
Style: Professional-Fit Maximum Protection Guard
Ten years ago I was told by my dentist that she saw wear from grinding my teeth. While I didn't get headaches or anything related to grinding my teeth, I did notice I do that during the day so it made sense that'd happen when I'm asleep. It took some time to find the right one for me. I tried a few that weren't the full mouthguard type and found this one worked for me for a long time. I have a small mouth so the one negative is that this guard is a bit bulky in my mouth. It's super easy to create a mold and re-do if you mess up but the natural shape is wider than my mouth so it's always off on the back molar. I do appreciate that it's a thicker mold but because of that, and I'm trying to protect my molars, trying to find the right fit on initial fittings is tough and the bulkiness of it too. It's usually around 17-20 bucks depending on where you get it but the cost is nothing as it can last me months before I have to trash and get a new one. Because I naturally bite down on my molars more deeply vs my front teeth, I have to be careful how I bite when I'm in the fitting stage cuz if I don't, I bite down too far down and I'm hitting the bottom part of the mold. Which means I go through the guard way too fast. So it takes some time to get the right fit but when I do, the guard can last for 3-6 months. When I don't get the fit right, it'll last a month, maybe two. After ten years, these have done a great job of keeping my teeth healthy. My new/current dentist said he saw no evidence I grind my teeth at all. He said I didn't need to wear one anymore but I find that I grind my teeth and wake up from it so I'm going back to wearing one but wanted one that wasn't so thick/bulky in my mouth. I definitely will go back if newer brands/guards don't pan out as this one does work very well. ... show more
