  • Better than other devices, but there is still room for improvement
Update: I have now paired this device with H2O Audio headphones and the sound quality is vastly better. For me, the change has made a huge difference to the performance of this product. The device still has its quirks, but I am enjoying using it much more with the improved headphones. Background: I am a fifty-something amateur triathlete with over 1 million meters of swimming activities in the past 6+ years. I do not swim with a masters club, so I spend many hours in the pool alone. As a result, I was an early adopter of waterproof music players. Over the years, I have used two waterproof iPod Shuffles and 3 Sony WS410 MP-3 players. Shuffle: Pros: Simple to operate and bullet-proof. Good battery life. Small size. Cons: Can only play iTunes formatted songs. No wireless connectivity. Sound quality suffered underwater due to terrible headphone fit. Sony: Pros: Simple to operate. Fit is excellent, and thus sound quality is relatively good underwater. Cons: No wireless capability. Only plays downloaded MP3 songs. Both these players were fine in their day. However, as the world of music moved on from purchased songs to subscription services, they became obsolete. I was stuck with a limited playlist back from when I either bought and ripped CDs onto my computer or purchased music via iTunes. Simply put, my small playlist was getting boring. I needed an updated device that could play new subscriber service music from Apple Music or Spotify (or both). These devices are now easy to find. Phones are the most obvious, but clearly, they will not work in the pool. My Garmin Fenix 6X plays music, and I use it frequently for my running activities, but it relies on Bluetooth headphones that will not work reliably in the water. Honestly, I have been waiting for Apple to come out with an updated Shuffle (or similar) that would work with their subscription service (come on, Apple, this is not hard), but after suffering through a Guns and Roses album for the 100th time the other day, I decided to try the Delphin Micro Tablet. Here are my initial thoughts (albeit only 3 swims in): Initial Impressions: Good packaging and presentation. It comes with a large assortment of earpieces and a stylus. The device itself seems ok, but the buttons are a bit unreliable. You never really know if you pushed enough or not. You don't get a satisfying 'click' when you press a button. There is no bag or similar for storing the device once it's out of the box. Setup: This is not an entirely intuitive device to set up. I had to watch a couple of Utube videos for help. The screen itself is small, and the menus are microscopic. It's a good thing they included a stylus because there is no way to enter passwords, etc., into the device without using it. Pro tip – do not forget to take your reading glasses to the pool. You'll need them to see the screen. Although there is an app available to use as an interface, it is also not very intuitive, and it feels like it was added on at the last minute. Sound Quality in the Pool: I have done three swims with the player, and I've used three different combinations of earpieces. None of them has been ideal. The earphones stop working if water comes in or they get the slightest bit out of line. They usually work well for a few laps, but eventually, a flip turn or an acceleration off the wall will knock them out of line, and one side (or both) will go silent. Other thoughts: The battery life is not great. The manufacturer claims 6 hours, but I have not gotten close to this, despite using their suggested tips for saving the battery. So, Pros: Can download and play Spotify (and other subscription formats) offline. It uses plug-in headphones that work in water. Connectivity features work well once you get past the initial setup. Cons: Expensive. Not compatible with Apple Music. Buttons seem cheap and lack 'click.' Hard to set up. Working with the screen not easy, even with the stylus. Battery life is sub-par. Headphones do not fit as well as the Sony player. Suggestions for improvement: - Do not make the device's screen the primary interface. Make the app easier to use. Right now the app feels like a poor cousin add-on. I'd build the entire user experience around the app, not the device. - Get the headphones right. They need to be as reliable as the WS410. I want to just put them on and go swimming. The fine-tuning and adjustment required is too much, especially when the sound quits after the first turn into a set. I thought the Hydro Active option would be similar to the WS410, but they are (so far) proving to be inferior. Admittedly this might change as I get more swims in and further fine-tune the fit. - Get a new battery supplier. - Supply a bag (or similar) to store the Delphin between swims. Final thoughts: This is a niche product with a limited customer base who needs to play subscription music offline and needs old-fashioned wired rather than Bluetooth headphones. The Delphin is one of the few players currently offering this, and, therefore, I recommend buying it as a step up from the Shuffle or WS410. This recommendation is especially true if your music library is mostly virtual and if you can afford the current version of the Delphin as a short-term solution knowing that you will replace it once an improved solution becomes available. ... show more

  • It works!!
After studying the lengthy reviews for a while and searching for other options I decided to take a dive with this. I have been pleasantly surprised to find out that it works despite the bad reviews. I have good vision, and no problems seeing the screen or pressing the buttons with minimal mistakes. Sound quality is fine, I haven’t tried any other headphones under water but I can’t complain about these. I downloaded Spotify and my music plays with no issues while swimming. It’s easy to skip songs with the buttons. It clips well to my goggles. I keep it on airplane mode and it lasts long enough for my two one hour swims, then I usually charge it, but it could possibly last for my third. It’s usually about 50% after my two swims. I also have been using the lap tracker, also very easy to use. Occasionally if I stop for water or don’t push hard enough on the wall, it may not pick up on my lap and it’ll skip one, but out of 40 laps it might miss two. I’m very happy with it. I’ve only been using it two weeks though, so fingers crossed it doesn’t start giving me issues. I’m giving it 4 stars because it’s so expensive!!! This should be $125 max. Seems pretty ridiculous. But it’s working. So I’ll keep it! Update: still working almost 3 months later. I’m swimming for 4 hours maybe 5 before charging. Still works really well! ... show more

  • Expect Headphones to Break
I got my Delphin in September of 2020, by April 2021 the headphones that came with it started to break. I got the more expensive pair and if I want to replace it the cost is $90! That is extraordinarily high for a product that only lasted 7 months. The tablet itself works fine but sometimes the app it comes with does not work. I am happy to have music to listen to when I swim but disappointed in the high replacement cost for headphones. ... show more

  • Give Delphin a try after using Sony NW-WS413
Ordered a 8 GB and actually received a 16 G, a free upgrade by the seller, which is great! Within a week, the "return" key did not work so had to return it for a replacement. Overall the replacement is better than the old one. But it is a 8 GB now. The customer service is great - very responsive. I had a Sony Walkman 4GB Headphone (NW-WS413), which I liked very much. But after 2+ years, its battery reached its end of life. After researching on the internet, I decided to give Delphin a try. It remains to be seen how long it will go. ... show more

  • So-so for the price
It's really cool to swim with music and this device will do that. However, it's rather pricey for what you get. Mine came without charger, but they sent one quickly after I contacted them. The screen is very small and not easy to use. It skips on it's own sometimes while swimming, can't stream while in pool, sound quality isn't great, and at times water gets in ear and I have to pause swim and wiggle the headset to be able to hear the music. There's no volume button either. Seems like it could be better quality for the price. ... show more

  • Headphones
Headphones only lasted 3 1/2 months. I did purchase the asurion warranty so they sent me a refund so I could purchase another set. I did have to call asurion on 3 different days to finally get them to send me the shipping label. Unfortunately this is probably the top set on the market right now as swim man/pod has gone out of business, so make sure you spend the extra $85 for the asurion 4 year warranty plan. ... show more

  • Skip it
Underwater audio is a tough thing to tackle, but I really regret buying this for the premium they charge. So many problems: hard to use interface, doesn’t work with the phone to unit connection, sound quality awful when it does work, comes off the head doing flip turns or swimming quickly. I’d buy this for $50-80 but $200-300 is not justified ... show more
