  • The benchmark ultrabook that offers awesome performance
CPU: Intel Core i5 Capacity: 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD Style: Laptop Only
I am an engineering student and needed an upgrade. After doing some research, I came across the Dell XPS 13 and I am loving it so far. This thing is FAST. The model I have has the Skylake i5, 256 GB SSD, and 8 GB ram. This comes with a quad HD glossy touchscreen. Design: The brushed metal on the outside of the laptop feels scratch resistant and durable. When the laptop is opened, one can't help but stare in awe at the Infinity Edge display. The small bezel around the screen is barely noticeable, and adds quality to the user experience. Display: The quad HD display is amazing whenever viewing media. The brightness and viewing angles are great and more improved than the past models by Dell. There is a little glare because the screen is glossy, but colors are more vibrant on this screen. Battery: The battery life is not as great as Dell presents it to be. I am getting around 7 to 8 hours of use out of the battery, which is sufficient for me. Performance: As an engineering student, I need to run programs and software like Matlab. I have Matlab downloaded on my XPS 13, and I am able to run all sorts of code that I can think of. I am able to multitask and have many windows of different programs open at once, and this computer still runs fast. As for gaming, I have only tried playing Mass Effect 2 on this so far. I can play the game in 1080p which bloom, dynamic shadows, and everything except for film grain on and still get up to 40 fps. When I bring this down to 720p and keep all of the other graphic effects on, I am getting 60 fps. When I bring the resolution up to 1440p, I get a mere 15 fps, which is not playable. Audio: Ultrabooks nowadays don't have the greatest speakers built into them. Although these speakers sound trebly, Dell does a great job of putting decent laptop speakers in the XPS 13. I hate listening to music through the laptop speakers, but when I have no choice, the XPS 13 speakers get loud enough for me when on the go. Keyboard & Trackpad: The keyboard is very easy to type on. The backlight has adjustable brightness so that battery can be saved if needed. The keystrokes are soft, but I am used to a Dell keyboard like this. The trackpad has many gestures that can be performed easily and has a satisfying click. This was a recent buy, so I will update my review in a few months to see if I come across any problems using the XPS. ... show more

  • Buyers beware, use at your own risk!
CPU: Intel Core i5 Capacity: 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD Style: Laptop Only
This was the worst purchase since George C. Parker last sold the Brooklyn Bridge. I ordered this computer new (not refurbished) from Amazon after my daughter, who is in college, reported that her old computer was too slow and the battery didn’t last enough. I picked this specific model from Dell after searching the web for the best laptops for college kids. I drove to her school on a weekend to help her setup the computer, and a printer I had bought for her. What I thought was going to be an seamless installation turned out to be a 2 hour ordeal. The initial setup was mostly OK. I did a get a message: “No Hard drive was found” during the install, but the laptop rebooted and continued on. However, once Windows started we realized that there was no indication of a wireless connection even though we knew Wifi was available. To compound the problems the default installation for this model was of Windows 10, so we were not familiar at all with any of the menus, and could not find what the problem was. We rebooted more than a couple times but nothing happened. Once we figured that something was wrong with the wireless card, we browsed the web (using our phones of course) and found that issues with the wireless cards in Dell computers were very common and prevalent in multiple models. If you don’t believe me just type in Google: “Dell wireless card problems” and Google will tell you that there are over 1,230,000 results. That’s right, over a million pages of posts for Dell wireless card problems. That’s more results than people living in all of Montana. We scrambled for what seemed like an eternity, I could not tell you what we did, or how we did it, as we tried so many things, but somehow we got the wireless to work. I drove back home that night (300 miles), thinking that I was not going to hear about the problem anymore. But first thing the next day my daughter let me know, by her use of acronyms and four letter words, that the wireless was once more not working. I was not going to drive back to help her out, but because she sounded desperate enough I took a long shot and decided to purchase a USB WiFi Adapter. It sounds stupid to have an Adapter connected to a brand new computer, but I didn’t know what else to try. Of course that didn’t work, she was not able to make the WiFi adapter work because Windows didn’t have the drivers, there was no Internet connection to download the drivers, and the laptop didn’t have a CD/DVD player, so the installation CD that came with the Adapter was useless. Somehow one of her Engineer friends was able to make the wireless work on a spasmodic fashion, which put a temporary solution to the problem. Of course I was still getting daily texts from her about Michael Dell and how he should’ve been in the business of making hot dogs instead of computers. Finally, this weekend my daughter was at home for her fall break, and I decided to tackle the problem once in for all. So I logged into the Dell support page, downloaded a program that scans your computer and determines all the firmware upgrades needed for your system. In my case the program detected 6 firmware updates, including one for the wireless card. It also determined that my system needed a BIOS update. Specifically it told me that I needed to go from version 1.0.0 to 1.0.0 of my BIOS. That is correct, it told me not only that I needed to go from one version, to the same one. It also told me that I was going to be installing most likely a Beta version of the software (a 0.0 version). It didn’t give me any option to select my upgrades so I had to go with the bundle. The upgrade went surprisingly smooth, and there were no issues to report, until…. Today, at seven in the morning I get a text from my daughter from the other room telling me that the computer would not start. Sure enough we pressed the Power button for several seconds, we disconnected the power, we let the computer charge, and nothing. The computer would not even boot up. It was more likely that Beta(Alpha?) version of the BIOS. At that point both my daughter and I sighed in relief, because we knew that we would not have to deal with the laptop anymore. We were finally going to go and get a good working laptop. We were first in line in BestBuy, and bought a Lenovo. The installation went smooth and my daughter was up and running in less than 20 minutes. My daughter was happy and that was the most important thing to me. For some people things have gone well with their Dell computers, but I cannot say the same for me. My recommendation is that you go the safe route and avoid Dell computers. ... show more

  • Nearly perfect IMHO -- but after some time and effort to get there
CPU: Intel Core i5 Capacity: 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD Style: Laptop Only
I would never thought to purchase a Dell product after many challenges with Dells in the past. However, I love this computer. But it was not an easy path getting here. Before summarizing the challenges, I need to first say that the computer was delivered right on schedule via Amazon Prime. After booting up the computer and updating Windows 10, I noticed the electrical buzzing sound so many others have reported. I also couldn't get the Thunderbolt adapter (https://www.amazon.com/Dell-DA100-Universal-Adapter/dp/B00O0M46T0/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8) to work properly. I contacted Dell technical support via live chat and desktop sharing and soon had the Thunderbolt adapter functioning properly after installing the appropriate driver. But the technical was not able to resolve the electrical buzzing sound. He suggested replacing the motherboard, which required sending the unit into Dell. I was reluctant to do this versus returning the computer under the Amazon 30-day return policy. However, Dell assured me the repair would be completed within about 1-1/2 weeks, including shipping. Dell made this process pain free by sending the return box to me via overnight carrier, including all packaging and labels. About a week later I received the computer back. Dell did not need to reinstall Windows so the computer was fully operational when returned to me. However, the replaced motherboard did not entirely address the electrical buzzing sound but I discovered that I could stop the sound by temporarily placing the computer into sleep mode after the initial boot up. This takes almost no time to no big deal in my opinion. The computer is everything that I have ever wanted in a netbook. The computer, including the display, is absolutely gorgeous and solid. The keyboard and touchpad work great (none of the issues with the touchpad that others have noted after updating the drivers, which does take some time to complete due in part to the MS Windows anniversary update). And the fan only turns on when under a significant load, which is infrequently for me (I do not use it for gaming). I only gave this computer four stars due to the time and effort to get the computer fully operational. But in my opinion it was worth it, in part due to the reduced price via Amazon, and knowing that I could have returned the computer under the Amazon 30-day return policy. ... show more

  • Don't forget to update
CPU: Intel Core i5 Capacity: 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD Style: Laptop Only
Out of box there are some minor issues. WIFI was acting funny. After installing the latest drivers from the Dell support website and upgrading to the latest version of Win 10, everything works perfectly. The Win 10 upgrade process was buggy though, I tried three times before I finally completed it. Overall it is a very good computer. The minor issues out-of-box most likely should be blamed on Microsoft. ... show more

  • So I've had a good amount of time to use it
CPU: Intel Core i5 Capacity: 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD Style: Laptop Only
I've had this laptop since January 2nd and it is now the 20th. So I've had a good amount of time to use it. It is plagued with issues though. Pros: - Fantastic screen. Touch screen works great. I have the QHD+ version - Great battery life. Around 8 hours of Netflix for me at around half brightness. - Fast. SSD + i5 is a great combo - No bloat installed Cons: - Intel display driver crashes randomly while browsing the web. Using the latest version as of this post. - Not sure if Dell Audio is stock but it might have came with the updated audio drivers. Dell Audio causes audio to pop and crackle especially when on youtube. - Keyboard could be improved. Key travel is too small, my backspace button squeaks if pressed at certain spots - Touch pad could be improved. Not as responsive as my old MSI laptop. - Webcam placement is horrible. if you want to video chat someone while laying in bed, the webcam usually is horrible angled and if you bend the screen down to get comfortable in bed, the webcam is pointed at the keyboard. - I have a dead pixel. I will be asking for a replacement soon and will see if that is any better. ... show more

  • Display Issues? 4k? ayy lmao
CPU: Intel Core i5 Capacity: 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD Style: Laptop Only
I just received my laptop today and I was very excited because I have very high expectations for it. I am currently a college student and I bought this laptop because I needed something portable, long battery life, and do college work (use software like matlab) as well as play some light games (dota 2 at basic settings for example). I was greatly disappointed because it doesn't come up to my expectations, which were not even that high to be honest. The following are the pros and cons. I will start with pros first: Pros: (1) good display, very clear (2) fast performance, sometimes stopped working for a sec or two but overall pretty fast (3) thunderbolt 3 port (4) good battery life, lasted 7 hours for basic web browsing and some usage of software Here are the cons: (1) The video lags so hard, sometimes the image would stopped moving but the audio continues (especially when streaming twitch.tv channels and watching 4k videos on youtube) [I don't know if this is driver issue or the computer just can't handle 4k videos, but seriously this is super frustrating] (2) keyboard sucks or maybe it will take sometime to get use to it. (3) touch pad and touch screen are just okay (nothing to be impressive, not as good as mac) (4) finger print magnet (5) even with lowest settings, I cannot play dota 2 (only 40 fps). Even my 4 year old pc with intel graphics does have 60 fps. (6) has to reset the resolution to FHD every time I use remote desktop (ayy lmao). Overall I rated 3 stars instead of 2 because I just started using it. Hopefully i will fix the display issue others can't really do so. Seriously, if there is thunderbolt 3 port on macbooks I will definitely choose macs over this computer. ... show more

  • Unit has bugs and Dell technical support was not very supportive.
CPU: Intel Core i5 Capacity: 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD Style: Laptop Only
I just want hardware to do what it is supposed to do. From the start I had issues with this notebook connecting to public wifi hotspots. Dell's technical support (offshore and hard to understand) did a good job of re-programming it and getting me going again. That was my one good experience. The same thing happened twice again during my less than 3 weeks of use, but I followed the same procedure and corrected it each time. I shouldn't have to do that. Then, the unit started to degenerate - locking up on cold boot periodically with increasing frequency until it locked up for good and will not boot now. After several frustrating hours on the phone with their offshore technical support, their final solution was to wipe the unit clean and start with a fresh install...on a less than 3-week old machine?? One jokster at their tech support said he'd stay on the line while I did that. Apparently he had never done a full wipe and re-install before. When I was so frustrated I said just send me a new unit - I had no confidence in this one, the offshore tech support went into defense mode. No, they couldn't do that. They were offering a solution to send it off for repair. No thanks, I bought it for a class I was taking at that time and their solution was unacceptable. They stood firm saying no on replacing or refunding the unit. They would call every day to see if they could be of further assistance, but offered no further assistance other than sending it in. Someday companies like Dell will realize these offshore support groups are OK at tech support (though, I even question that), but they are clueless on customer support. To date I have not been able to contact anyone at the American office. Yes, I am venting. I have a $1200 paperweight. In summary, the specs are great on this unit, but the one I received was defective from the start. Dell's support was horrible, so if you buy a Dell product, don't expect them to stand behind customer satisfaction. ... show more
