  • this is a great laptop. It is extremely light
Style: Intel Core i7
I'm rather lazy, so I'm not going to write a long review. But, I will say this, this is a great laptop. It is extremely light, has great battery life, good audio, and a stunning 4k display. I've read a number of complaints about the WiFI card, but the WiFi works great for me. I've tried it in a number of locations and have had no issues. I can only speculate, but many of the driver/software related problems people were having were related to Windows 10, which was very new when this device was first released. My only complaint is that the laptop is a little difficult to open once closed because the edge of the display side and the edge of the keyboard side are completely flush. ... show more

  • Stop buying Dell products
Style: Intel Core i5
I was very much excited to use this sleek machine after not using Windows machine for almost 8 years. The first month worked like a charm but then I started experiencing audio problems. At any point in time there would be annoying crackling sound which would not go away. It doesn't matter from where you are playing the sound, iTunes, youtube and even system sounds. I contacted Dell regarding this through emails and calls and they followed the usual protocol of basic troubleshooting. It didn't help. So they ordered a new motherboard for me and a technician came home and installed the motherboard for me. That didn't help either. Then they suggested me to do a clean install. I did that and it worked for couple of days and again the annoying sound was back. Now after 1 month of troubleshooting to add on to the audio problem my computer would not start. There is a blank screen and it would not start up. Pressing the power button would not do a thing. Amazon guided me to Adorama , the seller and they said since 30 days return policy is over they cannot help. So currently at the mercy of Dell who says since it is two months, replacing the machine is not an option. This is so ridiculous. This $1000 plus machine just worked for a month and do the dismay of Dell support , they won't even acknowledge the machine is bad. I wish all of the customers stop buying Dell products. If given an opportunity I would jump back to Apple MacBook and never ever on Windows. This would be my last machine. Horrible experience. ... show more

Style: Intel Core i5
My Lil bro, the Dell XPS earned that connotation for your information. This computer have turned me into a mobile computer powerhouse with its great battery life and mobility. Im a current HSA student and this computer has made my information gathering very simple. Google it, thts become slang to me because I say it so much. This Dell is also the most beautiful image I have seen on a computer screen for quite some time. It's up there with apple because we all know apple died with Steve Job's. The button layout is comfy on the fingers because being in my profession I type a quite bit. If your on the edge about switching back to Windows OS let this computer aid in making the switch. ... show more

  • Attention to detail review - This laptop is about as good as aDelle.
Style: Intel Core i5
-Summary- The XPS 9343 has a wonderful screen and performs well for non-gpu intensive purposes. It is likely to have problems of some sort, which can be troubleshooted. In my opinion the 15 inch version is too large for the resolution. The speakers are lackluster, the touch pad can seem cheap, but is nothing I have an issue with. It is awkward to open and close. Remember to buy a display port to HDMI converter if you want to use your HDMI cable. Overall, the screen is undoubtedly the hero of the laptop. Get the QHD screen if you are tech savvy and can troubleshoot programs, or know alternatives that are supported for HiDPI. -Ergonomics and Design- Backlit keys help immensely with typing in low light. Shortcuts are easy to get to with one hand for sound, impossible for lighting. Brightness settings are on F11 & F12 while sound is on F1-F3. The laptop feels thin, yet still remain sturdy. Opening and closing the laptop is awkward, you have to wedge your fingers between the laptop to get a good grip. The screen stays in one place, with wobbling happening only for a short period of time after adjusting the screen. The rubber-like carbon fiber makes an excellent surface for your palms to rest on. The touch pad could use some work, but I hear the new version of the laptop fixed it. The corner buttons on the touch pad feel awkward as they bend quite a bit. The rubber texture and gloss screen are dust magnets. The aluminum-like outside seems to resist scratches and hides them pretty well. The smoother outside grips fine, but is smooth enough to make sliding the laptop between books fairly easy. The laptop is light enough to grip with one hand and not feel like you are going to drop it. The inside creates a good grip. The power charger included has a fairly long cord from the AC/DC adapter and the connector of the power cable is lit up in case you want to find your power cable in the dark. Since it is not a 90 degree bent connector, the insulation connecting the wire to the plug will get bent over time. The power cable connector wire has a clip to attach it to it's own cable, vacuum cleaner cable style. The power cable connecting the adapter to the wall is a three pronged removable one similar to a PS2. Unfortunately the power port on the laptop is not lit up, same as any other ports. This can often lead to mashing connectors on the side of the laptop in the dark until the right shape matches. There is a button on the side that shows how much remaining battery life that I have never used, and I would consider superfluous. Power button is on the inside of the laptop and not easy to press, which is good so you won't accidentally turn off your laptop that often. The XPS has two, long strips of rubber on the bottom to keep the laptop still incredibly well. Within 8 months of ownership and a year or more after manufacture, the adhesive for one of the rubber strips has worn off and I will have to replace it. The airflow venting is on the bottom, making the laptop heat up very quickly. The laptop gets hot mostly on the corners on the top of the keyboard and in the center of the laptop above the GH keys. -Display- The 3200x1800 gloss display looks incredible at 13 inches. The tiny bezel is a huge step up and makes the laptop seem smaller. Please note, a vast majority of the market's software is NOT built for high resolution. You will struggle consistently with programs that have tiny buttons, UI that is barely working, and there is no simple way to "make the program bigger." In general, extremely large companies with simple programs will have support for high resolution. You can always turn the resolution down to 1080p, but it will look blurry on the screen. Importantly, I noticed that the high resolution on a smaller screen in addition to a small bezel actually made the screen feel larger. With more screen space it feels like the tents in harry potter where they look small on the outside but are big on the inside. I am extremely satisfied with the size of the laptop, 15 inches feels like it may be too big and stretching the resolution too much. Remember if you want to connect external displays that this has a displayport instead of HDMI, you will have to buy a converter. This is not a thunderbolt port. -Audio- There are speakers located on the sides of the laptop which are lackluster, as expected. Buy headphones if you want to hear bass. The 3.5mm port is on the left side of the laptop, so take that into account with your headphone cord's location on the ear cup. Sound card drivers are strange and sometimes will not recognize there are any speakers. A random number of 1-5 restarts will fix this. -Keyboard- Standard switches, somewhat quiet. Gets dirty under the keys very quickly. Grease from fingers wears out the tops of the keys fast. See pictures: you can tell I use my left thumb for space almost exclusively. This shows the wear from being used. Lack of a numpad is an irritation. Lack of home, page up, page down, end, as their own buttons is a major irritation if these are buttons you use remotely often. They require the use of the Fn key on the complete opposite side of the keyboard on the arrow keys to get to. This is a huge problem if you use key combinations such as Shift+end, requiring you to press Shift+Fn+Right. This requires you to take both hands off of typing positions to get to the keys and back. Caps lock has a light on the key to let you know if it is active. -Performance- Battery life lasts anywhere from 2-5 hours of active use. The Intel HD 5500 graphics actually surprised me by being able to run Overwatch at lowest settings with down scaling. I have not tried many other games on the laptop. Programs seem to run flawlessly. The SSD is fairly fast, I don't store movies/music on the SSD so space is not as much of a problem. No issues whatsoever using Java. -Linux tips- There's a page dedicated to the XPS 9343 on Arch Linux' page that should supply you with the instructions necessary to set up this laptop. I am running Ubuntu 16.04 Gnome, but have ran Manjaro Gnome and Elementary OS on it. Wifi drivers will not work immediately out of installation. Ubuntu requires you manually moving the drivers (Sorry, I can't remember how exactly. Google broadcomm manual driver install?) where Manjaro and Elementary OS had the proprietary drivers working. Bluetooth drivers are a NIGHTMARE on this laptop, I only got it working with Manjaro after attacking it with four or five different solutions. I still don't have it working on Ubuntu 16.04 Gnome. Sound card drivers usually work out of the box for the speakers. There is an issue with the right speaker occasionally buzzing, distorting, or clipping at mild volumes. The 3.5mm port is also an issue, as there will be a popping sound occasionally at one second or more intervals regardless of headset. It comes and goes, and I only solved it for a short time by downgrading the linux kernel. -HiDPI Software- I have found KDE, Gnome, Unity, and Pantheon to work fine as desktop environments on HiDPI. The customization ability is from most to least in that list. Windows 10 works fine as well. IntelliJ Idea is the best HiDPI program for code development. Krita is a good Photoshop replacement, but is still working on improving HiDPI support. Unity3D, Adobe CS5 programs, FruityLoops, and Steam are not supported for HiDPI. OS X and MacOS are apparently highly supported for HiDPI programs, if you can get that on this, life will probably be much easier for you. -How it has aged so far- -Within 8 months of use the adhesive on the rubber grips on the bottom has worn off. -Frustrating display port on the side was not connecting well, pushing in all the ports so that the connection is very loose, extremely easy to unplug headphones and power connector. This will probably have to be solved by unscrewing the bottom and pushing them back into place. ... show more

  • Excellent Laptop....Shame on Dell
Style: Intel Core i7
This is a hard review to do. I ordered the XPS 13, loaded with all options, top of line. Received it in six days vice the next day delivery that I had requested. That is on Amazon. Now for the laptop review. The HD touch screen looks fantastic, build and materials are hands above other laptops this size I have looked at. The processor is responsive, I do not have the issues with keyboard depth that some others have complained about. All in all this is a wonderful ultra laptop. Probably the best on the market IF: Here is the bad part. The present bios and drivers for this laptop do not play well with Windows 10 at all. The first XPS 13 I got from amazon had a screen that flickered and jumped around, the speakers had static in them, it had constant trouble trying to stay connected to WiFi and would not mate with my Logitech MX anywhere Bluetooth mouse (or any other BT mouse). I thought something was bad wrong with laptop and returned it for a replacement. I receive the replacement, and the same issues were present. This time I did some significant research into the problems. Dell did not prepare a new bios or drivers for this laptop. Originally it was put out with Windows 8.1. They slapped a windows 10 install on the computers with no new drivers. After poring through some forums I did discover a work around for these issues until Dell puts out new Bios and drivers. You go into bios and disable the advanced C-states option. Fixes all the issues but may decrease your battery life some. The really knowledgeable guys on forums believe it is caused when the broadwell cpu tries to wake up from various c-states (where processor powers down). The work around will probably affect your battery performance a little bit until permanent fix. So...I will keep the laptop. It is that good a machine. I give it three stars only because Dell jumped the gun to have a "Windows 10" ultrabook ready on 7/29/15 but did not adequately prepared a new bios and drivers. Shame on you Dell for giving this wonderful laptop a bad name in your rush to jump on Win10 bandwagon. Updating my review. Nearly three months after release of windows 10 and Dell has still not fixed driver bios issues on this laptop. I have all the latest drivers and updates and still frequently dropping strong WiFi signals for no reason. Will not connect consistently to any of three Bluetooth mice I have tried. Having to use a usb mouse. Windows 10 boot takes FOREVER and I have applied every single fix that I can find on the internet. I still think this is a SSD/Chipset driver issue. Gorgeous laptop and excellent construction... poor driver support ruins it. I am probably going to wipe the SSD and go back to windows 7 or 8.1. I no longer recommend this Laptop if you are going to use Windows 10. ... show more

  • Awesome laptop!
Style: Intel Core i7
I "love" this laptop. Windows 10 has some quirks that for the most part I've worked through. But, as far as the laptop, it is awesome! I did a lot of research before buying it. I have a coworker who teaches Microsoft courses and was pushing for me to get the Surface Pro, but many reviews placed this laptop ahead of it. And the price was much better. It's my first computer with an SSD and obviously the load time is unbelievable - about 5 seconds from power on to the sign on screen. The backlit keyboard is an extra treat. The only thing I would caution about is keep in mind, if you keep it on your lap with no airflow, it will get quite hot. I suggest getting a laptop cooler to set it on when it's in that kind of environment. ... show more

  • Wifi connection issues after "shut down" Wifi connection issues after "shut down"
Style: Intel Core i7
This is PC is nice looking but I am still testing this computer. My is from Amazon and it has 8 GB memory and 256GB hard disk, touch screen, and Windows 10 Home version not the Windows 10 Pro version. So much work so far compared to all my other new PCs in the past 20 years. Windows 10 Home version does not have Remote Desktop access. Battery Life- 92% 6 hours 15 min remaining with my setting and the number changed to 92% 7 hours 30 min remaining after few minutes. 91% 13 hours 44 minutes as I waited for few more minutes without doing anything on the computer ...etc. Problem 1: Can not get connected to wifi after "shut down": I was able to start the computer the very first time and got my wifi connection and installed skype without any problem. I "shut down" the computer for the night. Next morning, I was not able to get my wifi connection - I have "limited access" for my wifi and it said my wifi is "public" not "private". After researching on the internet with my old computer and saw many different fixes which I did not want to try on my new computer. I tried "restart" and the wifi was able to connect without any problem so I know it is not my router and it is the new PC. Finally I found one solution on the internet I was willing to try and it worked so far: Right click on "window start icon", Device Manager, Network Adapters, select the network card (Broadcom 802.11ac...), Power Management, UNCHECKED the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". This fixed my wifi problem when using "shut down" not "restart". Problem 2: " Screen (computer) did not work after waking up from sleep while connected to the Dell D3100 docking station": After fixing problem 1, I moved on to test the PC using the Dell docking station without any external devices. I had to press the "power" to start the PC. The keyboards lighted up but the screen was black the whole time and I was not able to do anything. After pressing "power" several times and disconnected the docking station, I was able to start up the computer. I tried the same fix as problem 1, System, Device Manager, Network Adapters, select the docking station (Dell GigabitEthernet), Power Management, UNCHECKED the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". I will be installing Office 2013 next. ... show more

  • WASTE OF MY MONEY, very upset with DELL Support
Style: Intel Core i7
I bought this laptop around August this year, just been 3 months and I am so disappointed that I made this purchase, so let me tell you one hard truth about this laptop, it has no Ethernet port and no optical drive and just after a week of its use, its wifi started to give me problems, and when that happens you have no other way to connect to the internet. I reached dell support and opened a ticket with them (#918972686), its been more then a month now, dell support is not able to resolve my issue, they some times update my drivers and it works and few days later it stops working again, they even replaced my network card and it worked for a few more days and failed again, I again contact them and this has continued,...as of now they seem to be clueless about the issue, last time I contacted them, they asked me to reinstall windows 10, I have done that, it worked for a while but the next days stopped working again. I am also very disappointed by there support, they always put me on hold and seen more eager to just transfer my call, ... they will schedule a time to call me and will never call me on that time. I have spent countless hours with the support , .... I spent my money to get the best, but my experience has been the worst, its definitely is not a MAC killer, but its a DELL Killer ... show more
