Description

The CS9080 center channel speaker delivers immense clarity and focus to the vocal range, accurately reproducing even the most demanding audio content so you can experience every detail of pure home theater. An aluminum dome tweeter, BDSS high-performance drivers, an integrated powered subwoofer and Intelligent Bass Control deliver crystal highs and deep, impactful bass creating an authentic reproduction of sound as the artist intends in the studio or concert hall. The inert, resonance-free cabinet structure with acoustically transparent grilles provides natural, uncolored sound without having to remove the speaker grille. The CS9080 can be placed atop any flat-surface such as a stand, shelf or cabinet, and its integrated rubber feet make sure the speaker stays in place and does not scratch your furniture. From the Manufacturer Optimum surround sound home theater reproduction places heavy demands on the center channel speaker, which in many respects is the main speaker in the system and often handles 50% or more of the program material. It's no place to compromise and settle for second best. Like all Definitive Technology center channel speakers, the CS-8080HD is designed with the same rigid standards and high performance goals as main left and right front speakers, and feature wide frequency response and extended dynamic range with extraordinary detail and articulation. Enjoy a truly full dynamic range and full frequency center channel speaker Integrated subwoofer delivers the sonic impact of a floorstanding speaker. View largerBuilt-in Powered Subwoofers Make a Dramatic Audible DifferenceMost audio experts agree that the ideal surround speaker system would have 5 identical truly full range speakers at every position. But most rooms and setups can’t accommodate 5 identical large speakers. So Definitive engineered the next best thing: a truly full range center speaker that fits easily on a shelf. The CS-8080HD's built-in subwoofer gives you full impact center channel performance. View larger Latest generation, ultra-high definition midrange drivers set new standards for wide dispersion. View larger Solidly built enclosure reduces unwanted vibrations. View largerThe CS-8080HD features a 5 x 10-inch racetrack subwoofer driver powered by a 300 Watt digital amplifier. The active driver is pressure coupled to two racetrack shaped low bass radiators for a total bass radiating area considerably greater than a 12-inch round woofer. The brawny 300 Watt Class D amplifier uses an integrated Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to equalize the woofer system to extend and smooth the bass response. Digital protection systems tightly monitor and control the woofer system to prevent bad noises and woofer damage at ultra-high volume levels. You'll enjoy a truly full dynamic range and full frequency center channel that actually outperforms many floor-standing main speakers. With the CS-8080HD you will fully realize the performance potential of the center channel program material as the movie director intended it to be heard. Its upward-firing woofer system only requires 1" (25mm) of clearance, so it works perfectly whether you mount it in free-air or put it in a cabinet.Patented Technology Delivers High Definition and Wide DispersionThe "HD" in the name of this speaker stands for High Dispersion. Dispersing the center channel sound evenly over a broad area of the room is vital if all listeners in the room (even those sitting well away from the "sweet spot") are to hear clear, concise and highly intelligible dialogue. Definitive's CS series offers the latest generation ultra-high definition midrange drivers that set new standards for wide dispersion. The CS-8080HD features a D'Appolito array consisting of two cast-basket 5-1/4" (13cm) second generation BDSS midrange drivers surrounding a 1" annealed Pure Aluminum dome tweeter housed in an acoustically isolated sealed enclosure. These are the same drivers and tweeters used in the BP-8060ST bipolar SuperTower loudspeakers, making the CS-8080HD the perfect center channel match. The drivers feature Definitive's patented Balanced Double Surround System (BDSS) technology that supports the speaker cone at both the inner and outer edges allowing longer, more linear excursion for greater clarity and finely textured inner detail. A new patent-pending Linear Response Waveguide smoothes off-axis frequency response and disperses sound over a wider area for crystal-clear intelligibility for every listener in the room. The 1" (25mm) tweeter is a pure aluminum dome, which has been heat-treated to relax the crystal structure and then coated with a ceramic to produce extended highs that reveal nuance and shimmer without a trace of edginess.Non-Resonant, Low-Diffraction Cabinet Maintains Sonic PurityAll the driver and electronics technology in the world would be wasted if housed in a resonance-prone box. The tapered front of the enclosure serves to make it appear slimmer while also enhancing sound quality by minimizing cabinet diffraction distortion, while a second layer of heavy MDF inside the cabinet prevents the drivers from imparting vibration to the rest of the enclosure. The decorative high gloss end caps and top trim panel add elegance to the matte black grille cloth the way satin piping adds dash to a tuxedo.Technical SpecificationsDimensions: 6-3/4" H x 23-1/2" W x 14" D (17.15cm H x 59.7cm W x 35.6cm D)Driver complement: 2 each 5-1/4" (13cm) BDSS midrange drivers, 1 each 1" (25mm) aluminum dome tweeter, 1 each 5" x 10" active subwoofer driver pressure coupled to 2 each 5" x 10" Low Bass radiatorsFrequency response: 20Hz - 30kHzSensitivity: 92dBNominal Impedance: 8 OhmsRecommended amplifier power: 20 - 300 WattsAV receiver crossover setting: Large, full rangeInternal amplifier power: 300 WattsPower Requirements: 110 volts AC (product not available outside of USA, Canada and Latin America)Inputs: One pair 5-way binding posts, low level woofer in (optional)Product weight: 33 lbs. • This center will not disappoint!
I saw the CS9080 on discount and thought wow, I need to upgrade my center channel! I've already got a DefTech setup in my movie room (ok it’s a just a den but that’s the best I can do in this house) with towers with powered subs, very old center and the bi-polar surrounds. This appears to be permanently on discount off the normal $1k and I am here to say, that is a STEAL! This unit has a powered sub AND a bass radiator. So the question is how do you want to set up your home theater sound system?? Your center is the most important piece in my opinion. It's your talker, your voices... if you don't have proper center, with proper distance and levels balanced, you will hear people on screen and front talking behind you or on the side. I always have my center turned up just a notch or so more so that when viewing regular TV/cable programs that may vary in output quality, the family has no questions or concerns as to audio input. But if that's all you ever do go check out the many sound bar options (including DefTech) out there. This center is so strong yet crisp and clean 'out of the box'… It’s the best I've ever heard. You'll get rich and deep tones even if you don't have a receiver, but if you do, you have options on your center now to consider. 1) Just connect your center channel speaker wires up and go (again really if you do this it's probably not the center for you but it does work) 2) Connect wires as above and plug in the included AC power cord 3) Connect the wires, the power cord AND run an RCA cable from your receiver’s sub out to it (LFE). For this you will need to get a Y RCA cable or splitter to reach both your sub and your new center that has a powered sub! (Note: some rare receivers may have two sub outs) I have a massive Klipsch sub that covers my den perfectly for that 'thump' in music and movie experience, so I currently do not run a cable to my CS9080. If you have the option to tweak your receiver properly, you can properly set your center to ‘large’ instead of small. You will get some incredible full range voices and sounds with bass out of your center but your subwoofer will still do most of the work this way. I also have my center’s crossover set to 60Hz (most default to 80Hz ‘THX’ spec), but I am still tweaking and testing lower crossover settings. If you have a sub-par subwoofer experience, go with the Y splitter to enhance the subwoofer management. You have options! Some people with DefTech speakers that have powered subs built into the center and towers don’t use a sub, and depending on the set up and room size, it can be quite fabulous. (So, they have a triple sub Y cable going to left, right and center) This unit has a manual level knob as well, probably want to keep this set about half way and let your receiver balance it for you but if you have a really large room or home theater, you can use it to adjust along with your receiver compensation. I also thought my wife would be annoyed with the lighted ‘D’ on the front of this so I made sure we could turn it off, you can as the image shows above. She actually likes it. It’s a lot to take in and consider, a ton of info on the interwebs, but when and if you take your TV room to the next level, this center will not disappoint. ... show more

  • Outstanding center and sub
Style: CS9080
I had my trusty old CS-8060 since 2013. After 10,000+ hours of use, the sub stopped working. I already have a Klipsch R-112SW 15" sub, but it's quite boastful and overwhelming when I watch films at low volume. Instead, late at night I would turn it off and watch stuff without ANY sub. I finally decided to get the CS-9080 for a less 'boomy' quiet watching environment. Well... this thing BOOMs. I set the sub volume knob halfway, and it has plenty of LFE to fill my large room. What I like about it, though is that I can more easily adjust the volume sweep compared to my Klipsch (that one needs a gentle touch, and it's awkward to reach). So, the subwoofer is certainly a contender. Most people wouldn't even need a dedicated subwoofer with this speaker. Center channel audio: Clarity of the voices is more natural sounding to my ears compared to the 8060. There's a smoother round-off in the upper mids, and the balance is much more "full". This is probably due to the larger 5.25" mid drivers compared to the 8060's 4.5". I notice a difference. I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger and went for this monster. I now have the Klipsch sub turned off most of the time, and will fire it up for those "special occassions" when it's movie day/night with friends. Heck, I might even experiment with a 2-sub setup, but not sure if they'll match well... but I'll give it a go some day. Current gear: Marantz SR-7011 receiver 5.1.4 Atmos setup. L/R speakers Definitive Technology SM65, Rear speakers SM55, and ceiling speakers are the SM45s. Center speaker is... you guessed it! The CS-9080! ... show more

  • The bomb or at least loud enough and realistitc enough to be one!
Style: CS9080
I had a four year old CLR2002 as my center. Two Mythos Two speakers for the sides and four Studio Monitor 350s for the surrounds side and back which I bought at Magnolia in 2008. The Definitive Technology C/L/R 2002 Speaker out powered the other speakers. I was thinking the CLR2002 sounded so good why not try Definitive Technology CS-8080HD Powered Subwoofer as a center, buy one more CLR2002 and use those two as front left/right speakers replacing the Mythos Two speakers. So, the CS-8080HD is my new center. I also bought the Definitive Technology SR-8080BP Bipolar Surround Speakers for my left/right surround to keep the same level of quality speaker cones and power handling and kept my two Definitive Technology Studio Monitor 350 Speakers for my rears. Replaced my 12" down firing JBL Subwoofer with two Definitive Technology SuperCube III 120v Subwoofers and it is awesome to have room filling TIGHT base that is accurate, precise, and delivered right on time to your body... (These Subs are surprisingly small.) In short. I couldn't be more pleased. I have a dedicated home music system with four Martin Logan Requests and a Theater Center (all electrostatic) as well as their 1800 watt three speaker sub and the Definitive system above sounds just as good 'for movies.' For music it rocks as well but for movies cones in general work better than electrostatics. This system has not failed me or disappointed me in the least. I recommend all of these speakers without hesitation. I don't think for the money you can do better though sonically the room, and each person's tastes, like speakers for their own reasons so you may not have the same experience but after going through Magnolia at Best Buy and a few other local places I just added on to the speakers I had bought a few years back. I'm using a Yamaha Receiver (see my review) which works well (no clipping and I can turn it all the way up and not blow the speakers which is good having an 18 year old kid around...) and an OPPO Blu-ray player (the best ever so see my review) along with a 92" Mitsubishi DLP TV (awesome!!!). Just for some balance, other than the 8800 series from Definitive I'm not really impressed by any of their other systems. They all seem cheap and tinny and weigh next to nothing implying no large magnetic coil system. While the non 8800 stuff is "older" sometimes that is a good thing so don't rule them out and you can still find them new for cheap. Now, I just hope I don't shake my house down or tick off my neighbors. Just as an FYI I still haven't found a better studio monitor so I just bought four more of the 350s, two for my office and two for my bedside, as for the price and quality/weight I don't think you can find better. I hope this review was helpful so please let me know if it was or wasn't so I know if I should keep writing these or not. Good luck with your search for perfection... - Greg ... show more
