  • So close to being great but not just yet
First of all, I LOVE this thing. Secondly, the precision of the machining is not quite there yet. You can put the smallest jaws on it and crank it closed and see it doesn't quite hit center all together. BUT, I can not praise it enough for the price and versatility. I bought some 70mm boots and added some fuel line on them to allow me to clamp some odd shapes. Please don't let my cons on this turn you off. It's a solid deal I'd not hesitate to rebuy if I needed to for whatever reason. As solid as its built, I can't imagine this thing ever breaking. ... show more

  • Worthy alternative to name brands
I have multiple chucks, and even more jaw sets, all from the industry leaders. Visual examination of this kit leaves me with the impression the included components are comparable to the best to be had. If you are just starting out, this is a great bargain for a comprehensive selection of jaws. It may be less of a value if you just need a spare chuck to be kept in a single configuration. This is just a preliminary review as I haven’t had time yet to assess its performance in actual use. I will keep updating this review as I get to test out the various configurations. But from what I see thus far, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this as a starter chuck, or as a second (or more) addition to one’s existing kit. ... show more

  • Inexpensive yet quality
The media could not be loaded. This is a quality lathe chuck, per my comparison to others in my wood turning arsenal that cost hundreds more when adding all the accessories. A nice carrying case comes wrapped in a bubble wrap. It is a hard plastic with plastic clasp that eventually will break off but the contents are the star. Inside was very smartly packed in form fitting cutouts all the components as can be seen in the photo; I won't list them but they represent a variety of jaws that are most commonly used. They are all nestled in separate cutouts and zipped tied for their journey to my shop. Various required tools are also neatly stored in the lid. It does come with a short user manual dedicated to safety, instructions on how and when to best make use of a particular set of jaws, some maintenance items, and a parts inventory; it's a one-time read. The jaw set I like the best was the what they call Flat jaws, otherwise known as Cole jaws, these were mini, but that may be a brand name? So their range of motion is perfect for when your need exceeds that largest opening jaws you have. Typically when buying a set of these jaws you'll get a set of posts that screw in to the plates at varying diameters. This set came with two rubber clad sets. I didn't measure but they looked like 1/2" and 3/4" tall. I have a tendency to use this sort of clamping jaw for finishing the bottom of small bowls as they can squeeze or push out on the bowl's mouth, just enough to clean the bottom up. The only criticism I have is that the plates are made of plastic but at least the screw inserts are metal for better wear. The chuck came pre-loaded with a set of round jaws screwed in. That meant the little bag of screws included are extra and to be treasured. I don't know how many times I've had to fetch the magnetic wand to find a dropped screw in the pile of shavings and chips under my lathe. In fact, I had to buy a spare set of 4 screws at a whopping $20. (I got screwed, no pun intended, since I later found them for $8, but still $2 a piece! Must be because they were metric?) Notably, the chuck also has a set screw. This is a key feature if you intend to turn in reverse or to change the direction of your sanding. I've had set screw-less chucks start coming of the head spindle while sanding in reverse, very unsafe. The chuck's gear key has a long cross bar for easy torqueing down on a set of jaws, although it is square keyed, it is deep enough so it shouldn't cam out but I prefer the hexagonal t-wrench. Most of the chucks I've bought before provide a woodworm screw. This set provided two. Usually standard is a 3/8" screw but included is a second 1/2" woodworm screw for attaching heavier bowl blanks, both are deep threaded. That is a welcomed addition to my turning tools. I did some testing of the components. First I ran the chuck on the lathe and did a visual on the run out. None was discernable to the eye at any speed. I also put a dial indicator on the chuck and manually rotated it to find absolutely no run-out. take a look at the videos. Next I installed each set of jaws and clamped them completely shut to confirm milling. I was not able to fit a feeler gauge between any of the jaw quadrants. I did not video that process... A nice feature of a quality set of jaws is the numbering of each jaw quadrant, supposedly in the sequence it came off the milling lathe. These are supposedly CNC'ed so I don't know the implications of that. (I suppose a mill can be Computer Numerical Control.) The chuck also has the 4 mounting positions by each jaw carriage numbered for consistency. All the components are nickel plated and unless you leave a wet piece of wood clamped in, they won't rust. (I have experience with this with other nickel plated jaws. I left a wet wood bowl blank chucked in for a few days and found the jaws all tarnished when I removed it.) Lesson learned. I did notice that the dovetail edge of the round jaws as well as the pin jaws was rather short This chuck and it's companion components have me impressed. I must have a half a dozen chucks sitting around my turning area of the shop, all purchased, and some rather expensive. This Amazon Vine provided chuck can stand up to any of them. Now, it isn't cheap in it's own right, over $200 is not chump change. But I tell you, from my experience, as a long time woodturner, if you had to go buy a name brand chuck and all that you get in this package you'd be out hundreds more. ... show more
