I bought a house with a gas fireplace that converts to a natural fireplace. I left this part of the gas fireplace in since it makes starting a fire a no-brainer.     • Check that air will pass through before installing
This burner has two parts. One is the burner pipe with holes in. The other part screws on to 1/2 in gas pipe and has an adjustable air vent. It is supposed to also have a 1/8 in hole to allow gas to pass through it to go to the burner pipe. I put my new one on but it would not light because no gas could come through. I took it apart and found a defect in that there was no 1/8 in hole. So I cleaned up my old one and re used it with the new burner pipe. Now it all works. So if you buy one of these blow through it first to see if there is a hole for gas to pass through. ... show more

    • Why did I wait so long to get this... 10yrs and 30 minutes.
My poor fireplace went over a decade with a gas end cap. Installed this in less than 30 minutes (I prefer being careful when working with flammable gasses). Used gas pipe tape (yellow case, not blue/red packaging- for heat, not water). Installed straight (not angle) - no gas leaks, quite easy... as long as you can turn the original gas end cap. I used a some locking pliers..worked first try. Some good advice: make sure the holes face at a down-angle... as you might be tempted to point UP, but gravity will not be your friend here... ash will fall and clog the holes. Google is great, eh?     • Great fireplace starter
Solid piece of metal. Definitely get the elbow piece to screw on the end to help support the starting rod. Easy to install, instructions were fairly simple.

Only reason for 3 stars is that this unit had a casting problem. The gas chamber was not drilled thus making it not function. After drilling it my self the unit worked as intended. There is really nothing to this. Its just a pipe.

    • Gets the fire place going quickly!
We only use the fire place 3-4 months out of the year and mostly its for amenance and not for heating the house. This gas log lighter makes easy work of starting the logs in the fire place. Lasts me for several years before it needs to be replaced

    • Works great, easy to install.
This was great, went on easily and works terrific, my mistake but I should have purchased the longer one. I purchased the 18" and should have gotten a 24". Had some issues removing the old one that was cracked, once I did that, the new one went on like a champ.
