In the days of yore, I had a set like this, but all the pieces were stored in a cardboard box. Over time, the box would break down and pieces would get lost somewhere in the board games closet. Years later, I found a travel spiral art set much like this one, but it was tiny and not much fun. This set is a LOT of fun! It is a good size for making designs. The outer circle is fixed, so the final design is limited a little, but there are two additional inner frames and twelve gears to work with for endless creativity. Three small gel pens are included. Of course, any pens or pencils can be used, so long as they fit in the gear holes. All the pieces fit inside and there is a small slide lock on the front to keep them all inside. A small stack of precut sheets of paper means the set can be used right away, which makes this a nice gift, too. My very favorite feature is the booklet inside the case. It shows the final design of what each gear will draw, depending on which gear hole is used. Even though part of the fun is discovering how each gear works, the booklet is especially helpful when I'm looking for a certain look and can't remember which gear to use. ... show more

This is a nice little starter set for spiral art. For being so compact, it has a lot of different pieces, both frames and gears, to allow children to create a nice variety of designs. Because it's so small, there isn't a lot of space on the paper, so that is a bit limiting, and our almost-five-year-old lost interest before too long. However, it makes a great travel set, and slightly older children might get more into trying all the different gears, moving the pens to different holes to create different shaped designs, trying overlapping different colors, etc. I really like that it includes absolutely everything you need--paper cut to just the right size for the frame, all the pieces to hold the paper still, various frames and gears, and several colors of pens. This is a great gift idea for kids, in part because of its compact size the box isn't too big, so that's great. It works well, and you can use your own pens if you want (to add flexibility). It's a fun toy that is sturdy enough for what you are using it for. It's too big to fit in a stocking, but it can be wrapped or put in a gift bag easily. My son has been obsessed with these. He was so happy when this came. The whole thing is convenient, acting as a case to hold everything needed. It comes with a few sheets of paper, but you will just have to cut to size after you run out.

I ordered this for my nieces when they come to visit. It is a throwback to something I had as a kid. This is on the smaller side, so for $20 I feel it is a bit expensive, but it is cute and compact and could be great for travel to keep the kids entertained while on the road or flying.

i'm 30 so i had to get this kit for myself...i mean for my kids... we all love the fun spirals and seeing what will come out of different combinations. its great fun for the whole family and i absolutely don't use it when the kids aren't home.

    • A Toy that allows some creativity
This set up, small for travle has a variety of different gears that will create different patterns. The size of the patterns will be determined by the location of the gear and how it rotates in the space. You will eventually need to cut paper to fit in the device, but this is a great object to take on a trip and it is quiet and does not require batteries. Just a pen or a pencil and then there is an option to color and explore the spaces created by the art. Better for children who are comfortable holding a pen or a pencil already and are all right using a thinner writing tool.
