  • Real Nice Reel
I have a couple of Penn Squall conventional reels and I wanted to add a spinner to round out my surf rods... Since I haven't yet finished building the spinning rod to match with this reel, I can only give my review on the reel without having taken it to the water... My first impression was what a beast of a reel; and this is just the 5000 model... It's probably more than I need, but I think it's better to go a little bigger, just in case you get Godzilla on your hook instead of a perch... The reel looks beautiful and feels solid and smooth... I think this is absolutely the best bang for the buck for a surf capable spinning reel... I don't believe anyone would be disappointed in buying one... Of course, there's always someone that has something negative to say, but I think most anglers would be hard pressed, not to like this reel... Buy it, you'll like it... I may update this review, once I get the rod finished and throw a few cast with it... But I expect it to perform well and bag a lot of fishies... ... show more

  • Best spinning reel I ever brought
Very durable and has some weight to it, not some piece of crap lightweight reel.

  • Can’t Go Wrong! A Must-have Work Horse Reel.
This is a great all around reel. The smoothness is great. When you perform your maintenance on a Daiwa BG 4500 - 8000, you will notice there is no reverse switch like on the Daiwa BG 1500 - 4000. Daiwa installed a anti-reverse larch that pin the pinion gear and shaft in place. This subsystem integrates a fine gauge wire (preformed) to a specific shape. If you’re having issues with the anti-reverse after you performed a maintenance, it is likely the wire that is mounted on the main gear and the wire is put in the hole that the latch is connected to. You want the gap between both ends to be no more than 2-3mm. Also the Straight end of the wire should be perpendicular to the circular part of the wire. Also: if you’re having issues with the reels smoothness, you want to inspect all the bearings and make sure everything is properly installed and lubed up. There is a brass nut that affixes they bail to the reel frame. You will notice a black centering cap that holds 3 screws. If you are still having smoothness issues, you probably have that one brass nut tightened just a hair or 2 too much. Adjust the torque in small increments and spin the handle after each increment to “feel” what is the smoothest for you. I found that the black centering cap fits without any hassle when you have that brass nut torqued down properly. It is sorta funny how the adjustment of the fine wire that is mounted to the gear, even by 1mm, and tightening the brass nut down too much will make your reel feel off. This is a great reel, smooth high-quality bearings, ported out aluminum frame for maximum weight reduction. I own a Daiwa BG 3000,3500,5000,6500. All great reels. ... show more

  • amazing
I have only had experience with Penn fierce reels before and i will say this reel is 100 times better in every single aspect. Fought a few 15lbs snapper on the 500 so far and the fight was much more smooth / steady and enjoyable. Every angler should have this reel in their arsenal.

Everyone who reads these comments are ALL TRUE. Great Value so many positive features and well built. To make this quick, 1 GREAT Price, 2 High Quality, 3 very strong well built, 4 High high line retrieve for the BG 5000 47.3 Inches....Super Fast! For BG 4000 39.9....So 40 inches very fast! 5, Super smooth very very light to the turn witch witch reduces hand fatigue tremendously especially with a full Metal body. Thanks to the Air Rotor combine with the lower center of gravity design. 6, DIGGY GEAR helps power your fish a Awesome with its over sized gear teeth. So yah Awesome awesome Reel. Buy IT! • Smooth. Great Drag. Works Great for Surf Fishing!
Was trying to decide between the Daiwa BG and the Penn Battle II. I already had a couple of the previous gen Penn Battle reels, so I decided to buy a pair of these 5000 Diawa BG reels and put them on my 12' surf rods. These reels are smooth! I replaced a couple of older EmCast reels and there really is no comparison. They are smaller, better looking, smoother and feel like you can really crank on them. I got the 5000 size because I almost always go back to braided line and these reels hold enough 65lb braid for my surf fishing needs. They fit nicely on my 12' rods and between the handle and the 'oversize digi-gear' it feels like you can really crank a lunker in. I just got back from a trip and the largest fish I caught (unfortunately) was a 3' blacktip shark - the reel had no problem at all (and I wouldn't expect it to!). The reels more than met my expectation and I would not hesitate to buy again - you won't make a mistake with these reels. ... show more
