When I think of D'Addario, I think of guitar strings, certainly not woodwinds. And yet they have made an excellent, well constructed saxophone reed here. I usually find 3.5 reeds to be too thick to play well, but this one was amazingly responsive, likely due to exceptionally good cutting. The surface is smooth and easy on the lip, the fit with my soprano sax mouthpiece is perfect, and the vibration is surprisingly good under soft playing. I have no idea if the USDA certification is significant to the sound, but considering you do put these things in your mouth, I don't mind seeing it at all. And this is probably a little bit better than the Vandoren or Rico Royal reeds I've used in the past. ... show more

I got these Soprano Saxophone Reeds for a friend of mine who plays Soprano Sax ... Here is a video of him testing out the reeds ... He normally uses #3. but was very happy with #3.5 ... He rates them as 5-stars upon his first playing with them. Durability value -- only time will tell. But he doesn't expect any issues. 5-stars. We hope you enjoy the music. ... show more

    • Got the wrong size
Unfortunately, I ordered the wrong size. I ordered 3.5. These are way too hard for me to play on. They would have been too hard even when I played a lot, but I haven't played at all for years. These 3.5 sizes are like planks of wood. But they seem like good reeds had I only gotten the correct size. They are consistent throughout and don't warp like other reeds I've had. ... show more

Organic reeds with packaging that's much more environmentally friendly than most? I'm all in. But, man, these were a tough go and really didn't do it for me. Based on other comments having to do with their hardness, I ordered a 3 rather than my preferred 3.5. Unfortunately, I received the latter. I tried 3 of them, and even with resurfacing, they were unyielding. Part of the issue could be that they are "filed" reeds. (As an unrepentant autodidact who has little interest in the technical ins-and-outs of such things, I don't know what that means [and haven't yet Googled it]). But the difficulty I had would seem to indicate a deeper issue; "seem" being the operative word. Perhaps I'd have a better experience with 2.5, and might give that a go at some point. Bottom line, my rating is balances the concept with the realization. ... show more

One of the most important things I look for in reeds is consistency. These soprano sax reeds fit the bit in that department. As I played from one to the next, I found that they were very consistent in terms of strength/resistance, and also tone quality. Highly recommended!

Strongly recommended. Before upgrading your instrument, give some of these reeds a try. No need to spend big when you can spend small waiting for the right instrument to come along.
