Description

Designing the Boston Sax Shop reed line has been a dream of mine, stemmed from the frustration that many of us as players have searching for that ‘perfect’ reed. For years I personally struggled to find a well balanced reed that would promote a warm, homogenous tone while still allowing me to project. Most ‘jazz’ cut reeds seemed to play too ‘bright’ and ‘buzzy’ but offered the projection I needed while ‘classical’ reeds had the depth and evenness I was searching for but simply could not cut across a band. So with the help of the finest French cane manufacturer in the world, I designed a ‘hybrid’ jazz reed that had qualities of both cuts, creating a reed that did exactly what I asked; providing a warm and dark tone while still being able to be pushed. I certainly hope you give them a try and enjoy them as much as I do! ~Jack Finucane (Owner and Repair Technician)

  • Love them!
These are amazing!

  • Consistent
By far the best cane reeds I’ve played on in 34 years. The quality is consistent throughout the box. They just play how one think that reeds should play without a ton of alterations.

  • Simpl;y amazing
I've been playing JAVA Red's since they came out and have always considered them to be the most consistent reeds out of the box I've ever played. The BSS reeds blow them away in every category. Super consistent, even, responsive, and sound FAT. Great job BSS!!!! All you have to do now is change NOTHING. ... show more

  • Best quality and consistency of any reed you can buy.
Five stars are not enough. These reeds are perfect. Usually I'm thrilled if 3 out of 5 reeds in a box are good. I've never seen consistency OR quality like these. Just to tell you something about myself, I don't say anything positive about anything or anyone from Boston unless it's true and has to be said. Jack Finucane has done something wonderful. ... show more

  • Nice work BSS!
Like the length. Like the cut. Like the thickness. Wonderful reeds!

  • Some of the best reeds I’ve tried
After five years of playing sax and seven years playing Traditional Vandoren reeds, these reeds are some of the most consistent and free-blowing I’ve purchased. I first bought an alto box of 10 around April or May and have loved them. Super durable; I chipped my first reed just a few weeks back. I’ve since bought baritone and tenor reeds that play excellent as well. Compared to Traditional Vandorens I used for the majority of my playing, Boston Sax Shop reeds are definitely worth the try for a small amount extra. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Worst Reeds I’ve Played
Really not one to leave reviews like ever, but I’m really disappointed with this product. I’m a professional saxophone player, and I heard great things about Boston reeds, so I bought boxes for my alto, tenor, and soprano. The first reed I pulled out of the box was split down the middle, and it was really easy for them to split while breaking them in. I’m an alto player, so I could make the alto reeds work okay, but all 3 types of reeds warped within 2 uses, the tenor ones being the worst (they were also size 2.5, the others were 3). I’ve never had much of a problem with my intonation on tenor (I usually play vandoren java reds), but my tenor sound has been so inconsistent and immature sounding since I got these reeds. Seems bizarre. Some of my saxophone-playing colleagues have the same opinions. Not to mention, these reeds cost twice as much and take 6 weeks to ship. ... show more
